Impeach Alberto Gonzales

An AUSA and reader of TPM explains:

I'm an Assistant United States Attorney in [*******], and am, of course, outraged by the U.S. Attorney purge, as most AUSAs are. I appreciate all the work you've been doing on this story. My own sense is that this purge has to be viewed as part a much larger story on the devastating impact of this administration's policies on the institution of the U.S. Attorney's Office.

. . . I strive every day to make sure that the Fourth Amendment rights of evn the worst criminals are scrupulously observed, only to learn that the folks I work for view those rights as disposable, inconvenient anachronisms. I operate in a criminal justice system properly designed to maximize due process for even the worst criminals, only to watch the administration kick and scream when forced to provide even the most basic due process rights to suspected terrorists.

And now the purges. So they've slashed U.S. Attorney's budgets, trashed rights we have sworn to uphold, and now, tried to toady-up the ranks of our leadership by firing some of our best and brightest, apparently to make room for wingnut-annointed political hacks. Folks who do stuff like this deserve to get caught.

Read the whole thing.

    Really, read the whole thing.

I'm so glad there's a prosecutor like him out there.  I wish all were like that.

i am glad to hear an ausa speaking up... those of us on the outside can only speculate on an organization's inner workings unless and until someone on the inside with huevos decides to take the role of truth-teller... no surprises, unfortunately, but certainly validation that what we THINK is happening is really happening...

And, yes, I DO take it personally

If that is how many Germans felt in the 1930's. I am sure it is.

If we let this go on for much longer we will be the 'germans' of the 21 century. And have to endure humiliation for years to come because of the Bush Administration.

    will be? (none / 0) (#8)

you can get a sense of where their priorities and emotions lie, even in/from their media.  You just have to do it in their language.

And, boy, are they unhappy with the USG.

What's sad about the purging of some of our best US Attorneys is that stuff like this coming from this administration is no longer surprising to me. I have contacted my Senator, (Sherrod Brown), and let him know that this needs to be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and not swept under the rug. Alberto deserves to be fired and then tried in a court of law. Our country is slowly but surely crumbling before our very eyes. It's very disheartening.

now here's an impeachment suggestion i could fall in love with.

no need to start at the top

    to bring the top down.

start where folks would be comfortable.

start with specific actions that would leave us millions of citizens irate, actions like firing u.s. attorney's, say to to head off further investigation of republican military corruption (that would be a reference to (no longer) u.s. attorney carol lam's (no longer) ongoing investigation of military corruption involving congressman duke cunningham, ex-cia honcho dusty foggo, and gov't contractor brent wilkes.)

abu gonzales is the perfect poster boy to represent the administration's six years of public lying and public deceit.

    and just think,

    as a bonus,

he was the president's white house counsel.

    but wait there's more.

for the same 19.99 you get

    • lying to congress about the nsa spying program,

    • working with ashcroft to conspire to hide info related to the plame-wilson matter,

    • recently, refusing to appear before congress,

any any other particulars y'all suggest might go into the four corners of the indictment/impeachment?

    Any other particulars? (none / 0) (#17)

Does fraudulently impersonating a human being count against him?

I always thought his full name must be Alberto Remora Gonzales.

But take a look at the first sentence of this Wikipedia entry.

the indictment is in wikipedia (none / 0) (#19)
by orionATL on Mon Mar 05, 2007 at 09:33:52 PM EST
the first sentence does not impress me but

further down in the wikipedia entry

there are all kinds of reminders of gonzales' actions that could fuel an indictment/impeachment.

but the question gonzales' life trajectory   raises for me, as it is described in the wikipedia entry, is

how could a high-achieving son of immigrants end up being such a complicitous servant to gringo power?

better, i suppose, to drive the limousine than to insist on a seat on the bus.

    That's why I thought ::Remora:: was better (none / 0) (#20)
