Senator Edward Kennedy has a diary up at Daily Kos addressing the nation's need for immigration reform. Best line:

We must find a better solution to our immigration crisis than raids that rip families apart.

His staff will be answering questions in the comments, and he will personally respond to some tomorrow.

    Is it only the families of those who (none / 0) (#1)

    choose to ignore immigration laws and commit identity fraud that we are concerned about?

    Or do we have the same outrage when parents choose to commit other crimes and as a result go to jail and/or are separated from their families?

    I feel outrage when anybody gets their family ripped apart for anything less than a violent crime or serious theft.

    I agree wholeheartedly that any solution to this problem has gotta leave out the ripping apart of families...where is your proposal Ted?  Thats why you make the big bucks sir....get to work, the families need you.

    I just wonder where Kennedy and TL were when, for example,
    U.S. District Judge David Hittner refused to accommodate Mrs. Fastow's preference to serve her [one year] term in a minimum-security camp for women, where there is a playground her young children, ages 8 and 5, could enjoy during visits
    She was convicted of signing a fraudulent tax return (maybe several?).

    think it pretty stupid if he does time. I'm not a big prison time guy though, as you would probably have guessed. My opinion on the matter has nothing to do him having school aged children, but I understand why you bring it up here.

    On topic, Kennedy's point is highly credible, suo.  I'm glad whenever people with stroke stand up for common sense and decency.

    his point is good, I won't belabor mine any further, however I just hope it isn't grandstanding on his part.

    The fact that he seems to show compassion - which everyone can support - yet falls short of actually proposing a solution - which many will not support - makes me wonder just how serious he is.

    My solution to this specific problem? Continue arresting and deporting illegal aliens except give them some a reasonable amount of time to get their families and affairs organized before they leave.

    Go after the corporations and their owners that hire illegals.

    Just like the War On Drugs, arresting the victims is a great sound bite and pads stats but does nothing to halt the flow; stopping the source (the folks who employ them) means going after political contributors.

    Americans will take these jobs once they are being paid what it's worth to do them.

    1. Amnesty

    2. Wait 5 years

    3. Ask "Gee, why do we have more people still piling in?"

    Educate yourself.

    Teddy was of the big time drivers the last time.

    Anything he says can be taken with a grain of salt.

    Why not answer the comment instead of complaining?

    we didn't read about an ICE raid and the accompanying suffering every other week the "last time"...eh buddy?  Unless you remember different...I was just a kid.

    Lock 'em up and ship 'em out while somebody else is crossing the border to take the same job makes no sense to me.  Cruel and unusual, imo.  Not to mention ineffective.

    So yeah, I'll take amnesty over what went down in New Bedford.  Though I'm open to another solution that doesn't involve lock 'em up, ship 'em out, repeat.

    children have been separated from incarcerated parents since the first civil societies formed. thousands of years ago. what makes the children of these particular law breakers special?

    The raid swept up 361 workers at a leather goods factory, at least 20 percent of whom had already received deportation orders.

    Sen. Edward Kennedy has abandoned [his] new immigration bill under discussion in favor of legislation that could be more appealing to Republicans.

    Kennedy, the lead Democrat on immigration in the Senate, is now proposing using legislation produced last year by the then Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee as a starting point for immigration reform.
