The Xenophobic Democratic Party? - Part 2

The ugly side of "populism" is rearing its head in the Democratic Party. Kos writes about Rahmbo's enabling bigotry:

Is Rahm racist, or merely scared?

It's got to be one or the other, because Rahm Emanuel is behind efforts to build Democratic support for the Shuler/Tancredo "enforcement-only" bill currently winding its way through the House.

Think about it -- our House leadership is strong-arming Democrats into backing a bill which is the central agenda of the biggest racist xenophobe Tom Tancredo.

Sadly, as Jane Hamsher documents, Speaker Pelosi is backing these efforts:

Tensions between Hispanic Democrats and House leaders exploded Friday when a bloc of Hispanic lawmakers voted to derail a major tax bill, relenting only after an angry confrontation on the floor with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md. The rebellion was a response to votes by 36 Democrats Thursday night in favor of a non-binding Republican motion Hispanic members called offensive. It instructed House conferees on an appropriations bill to accept a Senate-passed provision prohibiting the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from suing employers over certain English-speaking requirements.

This is outrageous AND idiotic. More.

And we see more tell tale signs of Pelosi letting the Speaker's position go to her head:

That same Hispanic lawmaker reported that Pelosi said, “You see this on the board? This is against me, this is against me personally.”

Actually Speaker Pelosi, it is against people like me, Latinos, personally.

Paul Hodes, Patrick Murphy, Jerry McNerney, Ciro Rodriguez, Jason Altmire, Mike Arcuri, Nancy Boyda, Chris Carney,  Joe Donnelly, Brad Ellsworth, Kirsten Gillibrand, Baron Hill, Steve Kagen, Nick Lampson, Ed Perlmutter, Heath Shuler, Zack Space, Tim Ryan, Mark Udall, Brian Baird, John Barrow, Melissa Bean, Marion Berry, Sanford Bishop, Dan Boren, Leonard Boswell, Rick Boucher, Allen Boyd, Jim Cooper, Bud Cramer, Artur Davis, Lincoln Davis, Bart Gordon, Brian Higgins, Tim Holden, Paul Kanjorski, Jim Marshall, Mike McIntyre, Charles Melancon, John Murtha, Mike Ross, Bart Stupak, John Tanner, and Gene Taylor.

    Is this just fear?

Will the Left blogs start to focus on this with commitment?

My hope is they will. My expectation is they will not.

    Kos wrote that post.

    We all know why.

It was an embarrassment for him.

But let let it die a slow death. Thankfully, the other LEft blogs are sort of awkwardly looking away from that dkos car wreck.

Got tired of lurking, decided to sign up.  A blog that discusses issues - amazing!

This is a great post, btw.  As always, I am struck by how out-of-touch our representatives (on either side of the political fence) are when it comes to immigration.

It's not exactly comparing apples to oranges when one looks at how the right (and far right) hijacked the immigration debate in multiple countries in Europe.  The left is stuck compromising with them now, when they could have started rational reforms many, many years ago.

There's more to that... sorry for such a general statement.  I'll have to think about it.

p.s. off-topic, but could you start calling Huckabee "Dobson's Sockpuppet"? :-D  It was your term for Frist, and maybe you could recycle it.

Also, I don't multitask well, but I grabbed the RSS feed, so I'll be reminded to read you guys.  I greatly appreciate the depth and variety of the posts here.  I'll try to comment more.

Please keep talking about the immigration stuff... and Frank's been thrilled with "Armando's equal-opportunity smackdowns of the candidates", LOL!

    Balance is always good.

look like anyone will denounce it to me. The list of co-sponsors appears to be large, and I have a feeling it will grow if leadership is pushing this as some kind of wink-and-not to the xenophobics.

That's just idiotic.  My grandparents were immigrants, and I don't take this personally.  How is enforcement of the law something you take personally?

It is about attempt to STOP ENFORCEMENT of the law.

But we know the rule of law matters to you only when it is convenient to your prejudices.
