Update: Saddam has been sentenced to die by hanging.

A curfew is in place in Baghdad for the release of the 200 page verdict Sunday against Saddam Hussein. Saddam faces hanging if convicted.

Saddam says he will die with honor and no fear.

Saddam's lawyers told Reuters they chatted with him for more than three hours on Saturday, saying he was in high spirits and talked about mounting U.S. military losses and the insurgency.

"I will die with honour and with no fear, with pride for my country and my Arab nation but the U.S. occupiers will leave in humiliation and defeat," they quoted Saddam as saying.

"They will see rivers of blood for years to come. It will dwarf Vietnam."

If sentenced to death, it is unlikely to happen soon.

Even if he is sentenced to death, it may be many months, even years, before he is hanged as appeals are heard. Saddam is due back in court on Tuesday in another trial, for genocide against ethnic Kurds.

German radio reports in their noon news that Sadaam has been sentenced to death by hanging for crimes against humanity.

Che (early riser or late going to bed - I don't know which) got it first, elsewhere.

Isn't it interesting how the verdict against Saddam Hussein will be issued just prior to our midterm elections. I'm sure that it was just a coincidence. The timing of the verdict had nothing to do with an attempt to influence our midterm elections for Bush is an honorable man. Cheney is an honorable man. Rumsfeld is an honorable man. So are they all, honorable men(sarcasm alert).

Saddam was certainly guilty of serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity. The problem was that the judicial system that convicted him should have been beyond reproach. As a result of the flawed procedures, we have turned someone who should be vilified by all Iraqis into a martyr for some Iraqis. Rather than bring this country together, the verdict increases the hatred and violence between Sunni and Shiite with our servicemen being caught in the middle.

I don't know about the efficiacy of this right now (if efficiacy is the correct word here), SH although a villian isn't the right villian.

Isn't it interesting how the verdict against Saddam Hussein will be issued just prior to our midterm elections.

Oh - and of course the process was fair....(yeah, dripping sarcasm)

I can't help but wonder if W felt a little trickle of fear running up and down his spine when he heard the "death by hanging" sentence passed on his old pal.

Damn, it'd be nice to see him and his gang - Cheney, Condi, Rummy, Wolfy, Tony - all those scum sitting in a prisoner's box somewhere, waiting to hear the words and wondering how it happened to them.
