Kissinger: We Can't Win in Iraq

Can we win in Iraq? Not according to Henry Kissinger.

If you mean by military victory, an Iraqi government that can be established and whose writ runs across the whole country, that gets the civil war under control and sectarian violence under control in a time period that the political processes of the democracies will support, I don't believe that is possible,'' he told the British Broadcasting Corp. on Sunday.

if we'd been told that there was no legitimate reason for us to invade iraq in the first place tom? would that be the truth you're referring to?

last i checked, we were attacked by the japanese navy, at pearl harbor, which kicked off our direct participation in wwII. last i checked, iraq (still) hasn't attacked us. so please, enough with the pathetic attempts at wwII analogies, there aren't any.

yeah, dr. k was the architect of the so called "secret plan" of nixon's to end vietnam. we see how well that turned out.

if he wasn't the model for "dr. strangelove", he modeled himself after peter seller's character. either way, who really cares what he thinks?

He's been right about everything else, so he must be right about this.  Not.

But then again we may win in Iran????? (5.00 / 1) (#9)

Yes, Henry believes that now Iran should be the focus...... as if it hasn't always been. From his point of view, the world, as we know it will end, if Iran is allowed to pursue their own national interests.

I guess it is the old saw: First one group of savages claim that they are no longer savages because they have fire. If the savages (ones without fire) obtain fire the world will be destroyed. So it is up to the now no longer savages to kill the remaining savages to save the world.

Old stories never seem to die.

Even my 18 year old son has been saying for years that the only way we will see a resolution to the mess in Iraq is through a political, negotiated solution.  Bush is getting a lot of advice from the likes of Kissenger and Baker.  Will he listen?

    Negotiate? LOL (1.00 / 1) (#4)

Hey, the Left has never paid any attention to Kissinger before...

And who will you negotiate with? The terrorist? Who is naive enough to believe we can trust Iran?

Of course Iraq can't be "won". It's been blindingly obvious since about eight weeks into the occupation.   Somebody send Kissinger back to Transylvania, please.

is the American people don't have the guts to stick out a war. We did fine in WW2. Maybe if we'd been told the truth about it from the first, insead of being feed selected tid bits from unreliable scources...but then, there wouldn't have been a war.

So, assume that Kissinger believes we can win. Who cares? All you have to do is look at the direction of events in Iraq; it's getting worse by the month.

Kissinger himself has been out of power for about 30 years. His world view probably is far removed from what the new reality is.

...the opinions of Kissinger is just another step into Mr. Peabody's way-back machine, and a trip back into the bad old days when a republican president proved himself incapable of running an honest presidency, and instead concentrated on the same things bush now does: illegal wiretapping, state sponsored surreptitious entry without warrant, domestic spying on citizens, enemies lists, and a host of other nefarious means of depriving Americans of a competent government willing to be honest with us.

I will never again lend any credence whatever to anything Kissinger ever has to say as he was one of the architects of the current rethuglican party, which is naught but a throwback to Nixon-style government. What a disservice this man has done to America.

So Kissinger believes that the war in Iraq is militarily unwinnable.  It would have been nice if he could have maybe told us this before over 2800 Americans were killed, 21,000 were wounded, and billions of dollars were wasted.

How can those who support Bush's invasion/occupation of Iraq ask more of our soldiers to give up their lives for a war that is unwinnable?
