Condi Rice Makes Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List

Via Brains Over Bombs, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has made Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List.

She was cited for being "immaculately groomed and formidably dignified but with an audacious renegade streak".

But, Condi's accolades may be wearing thin.

In the wake of the toughest fortnight of her career even some of her fans suggest that the high-profile Condi routine may be losing its appeal.

....Since her appointment in January last year she has had barely a negative headline. Her concert-level piano-playing, dawn fitness routine, and an appearance in knee-high "dominatrix" boots, which were cited for approval by Vanity Fair, have all been deployed to promote her image and US power. But the Middle East has proved more of a quicksand for her talents.

Back to the best-dressed issue. High-profile women in the public eye, from political candidates to business leaders and yes, even some trial lawyers, don't have much time to shop or may lack a great eye for a put-together look. They use personal shoppers who have their credit card, buy the clothes and accessories and drop them off at the client's house. A really dedicated personal shopper will stick around while the client tries on the outfit and all accessories and then photograph them with a polaroid or digital camera and put the photo in an ongoing journal of blank pages. So when the client is getting dressed, she just looks at the photo, dons the clothes with the right shoes, handbag and jewelry and is ready to go.

We know Condi likes to shop for own shoes, but I really doubt you'll find her at Saks or Neiman's picking out her own outfits. So, congratulations to Condi's personal shopper.

On the other hand, I give her full credit for her piano-playing ability. There are no personal assistants that can provide that talent.

Best dressed! All this and ditzy too: I don't think Iraq is going to slide into civil war. They have a problem with sectarian violence. [But] I don't think that you're looking at the breakdown of the institutions; people haven't opted out of a unified Iraq. -- The Secretary of State to TIME magazine, 6 August 2006

Sorry TL, but this insipid post is simply incredible. That you'd focus on her attire, ignoring some of the comments she made this weekend (some of the most assinine I've heard) is very unlike you. YOU continue to focus on her hair and her "boots"; the rest of us in SeriousLand will inspect and dissect her comments for the inaneness that they harbor.

condi is a disgrace and an embarrassment to herself as well as the united states... i believe she likes to think of herself as a strong woman, an intellectual, and as someone who has her hands on the pulse of and understands world affairs... i also believe she thinks of herself as an independent thinker... perhaps, one of these days before she slips into her dotage, she might come to realize she, along with her predecessor and a distressingly sizeable number of others, made a bargain with satan's minions when she signed on with george and company - in particular, karl, dick, and rummy... too bad, condi, there's no "undo" button on THIS computer... [commenter's blog link deleted...it's under his name, please do not repost it inside the comments]

There's plenty of places to do that here Punchy. Here are some of the latest.

Just be ready to be excoriated by posters much more cynical than I for appears to be a post focused purely on the fashion acumen of a failed individual whose comments and actions have substantially eroded our standing among other nations. You're going to have readers thinking they came to talkleft for educated insight and biting critique, and instead they got the bloghost of Princess Sparkle Pony....

What I like to do for my clients is sew a picture of an animal in the top and in the bottoms. Sometimes I use a very cute Rhino, sometimes a Giraffe, or a Chimp, a Panda, or a Lion. Then all my clients, or Condi would have to do is match the animals together to know they would be a fashion success!

On the other hand, I give her full credit for her piano-playing ability. There are no personal assistants that can provide that talent.
Have you heard her play? A musician with no soul is no better than a good stenographer/typist which, for some, may be viewed as talent as well. It's hard to tell whether she is a typist or musician from this inchoherent youTube link. I play both Brahms pieces and haven't a clue whether or not she has a soul from the youtube snippet. If she does have a soul it hasn't made an appearence on the stage of her diplomatic efforts, to be sure.

I support TL's post of this story as it draws attention to one of Rice's many flaws. While she may make Vanity Fair's best dressed list, it's not a distinction I would want in our secretary of state. In the world of diplomacy, dressing to kill (particularly now) is probably not an impression one wants to make at the bargaining table. I'd say erring on the side of understated formal is appropriate. Further, in Rice's comportment, whenever I listen to her speak I am struck by the tone of her voice. While she may be perfectly confident in what she says I find her tone disconcerting if not irritating. It seems lacking in confidence and while that might be a perception of mine I wonder how it comes across to others. I also believe Rice lacks the maturity and experience to be an effective secretary of state at this moment in history particularly when one considers who have held this position prior to this Bush administration. She was trained as a Sovietologist and so she has been learning on the job when it comes to the Middle East. When I review her career even back to the Stanford days, she strikes me as a "careerist" rather than one who is dedicated to the substance of her career. Her mode of dress reflects it - the devil does indeed wear Prada.

This issue is symbolic of what is wrong with Rice. Squeaky has hit the nail on the head - she's a perfectionist - she's lacks heart. Perfectionis are obviously good at following rules and acheiving but they lack heart because they do not have an inner strenght. They always look outside of themselves to determine their actions. They see life in black and white, and don't deal well with philosophy, compromise, and areas of grey. Don't get me wrong it probably comes from growing up in the segregated South where any flaw in a black person was criticized and over exaggerated to support some clain of inferiority. In the white world to suceed she had to be perfect. It was her way of surviving. However perfecionist make poor leaders and visionaries. What is needed now is someone who can try to find common ground on both sides and the will to make it happen. Instead we have somone who is worried about their posture and how many times they brush their hair. Just my pop psychology analysis. B

I don't think much of Condeleezza Rice's politics; neither am I impressed by her or her personal shopper's dress sense. But whether she is applauded or criticised by the press for her image, I can't help but find it a little distasteful. Punchy is right that the focus should be on her comments, but I think TL is correct in drawing attention to the fact that Vanity Fair has put her on the best dressed list. How many male politicians are scrutinised in this way? Do we really still live in a world in which a powerful woman can make serious comments and people are watching her thinking, "But she looks so pretty!"? I don't really think of myself as a feminist, but rather as an egalitarian. I'm annoyed not entirely on behalf of Rice, but that her party has seemingly used her as a propaganda tool, the pleasant face of Republicanism, and that society seems not only to have accepted this but embraced it. Forget her opinions, what apparently matters is that she is an attractive-looking black female. It reminds me of the old joke: 'it's a pity she wasn't a disabled lesbian too and then she would have ticked all of the boxes.' It's one thing noticing if a lady has nice shoes; it's quite another if that overshadows her more significant attributes.

HK make a good point. As, much as I dislike Condi, it seems that there is a double standard when it comes to dress between public figures. Men are rarely if ever evalualuated on their dress, unless we are talking about Guilliani and his cross dressing. Woman on the other hand are constantly sized up as to their dress, rarely if ever does their dress go unscrutinized. Wonder why that is? Is it hardwired like in birds, where males have the outfits, or is it just a cultural remnnant from the stone age?

LW - You sound like you've been watching "Queer Eye". Agreed that Bolten is sooo early eighties. She definatly dosnt make it through the velvet ropes. But, have you seen Don lately? Armani and absolutely fabulous!!!

We know Condi likes to shop for own shoes, but I really doubt you'll find her at Saks or Neiman's picking out her own outfits. So, congratulations to Condi's personal shopper. Y'know, Martha doesn't do her own vacuuming, either. Am I the only one who doesn't think this is so awful? A woman with a lot of money, a decent figure, no family obligations and a very high profile throws some effort into clothes? It's probably one of the few things in her life that doesn't make her feel like a eunuch. So many things about Rice are disgusting (not the least being the people she chooses to work for). But a taste for good tailoring? (Note that Laura Bush certainly has access to any sort of fashion assistance Rice has--the money, the personal shoppers, even a lady's maid. However, Laura is a major frump. [Not that there's anything basically wrong with that either--you should see what I'm wearing.] But if you go back the last quarter-century, first ladies have been rather well turned-out--the exceptions being both First Ladies Bush. This could be a coincidence. Or Bush married someone who dresses like his mom. Or Laura has one of those husbands who ridicules her every time she tries to look attractive. My money's on the last; there's no one you can make to feel like homemade sh|t like a spouse and Dubya just isn't the man to pass on an opportunity like that.)

What color goes best with the apocalypse? Red and black always do it for me. To hell with WMDs, so long as we are sartorially hep!

ppj-snobbery? If I had to sit through a concert of a competent but untalented musician as opposed to being with a really talented dictationist or typist for an equal amount of time I would just stay home and do some blogging instead. Even sitting around and doing nothing would be more interesting for me. I have been around some awesome typists in my time and watching them gets boring very quickly for me. It could hold my attention for maybe five minutes at the most, that is, if they were really spectacular typists. Yes, I have been blown away with the speed and perfection or the typing geniuses I have known, but that in itself doesn't hold much of an interest for me as, say, a great musician perforning on their instrument. Actually some of the best typists I have ever seen have been musicians, pianists usually. For me, their playing was always much more interesting. And, sheepishly I must confess, I have never been around a really talented dictationist, or been privy to any dictationist feats period, nor have I read about them. If that is snobbery in your book, so be it. Yes it is true though ppj, I often am totally bewildered by the taste of others. So, I would not fault you, too much, for preferring typing or dictation over music. It is your freedom.

If Rice was taking her job seriously, which right now is to stop a massacre, she wouldn't be so concerned about clothes and shoes, and she wouldn't have time to play bloody Brahms. Screw Brahms. Stop the bombing. This reminds me of those UN people who "worked all through the weekend", we were told, to draft a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon. All through the weekend. Wow.

She is immaculately groomed, there's no doubt about that. And I must admit she's an impeccable dresser, girlfriend has taste. But she could use a little work on those teeth, that's the only real flaw I can see. It's too bad she can't transfer some of those looks into actions. She is the most powerful women on the planet, possibly the most powerful Black woman in history, and she does virtually nothing. I can see now why Colin Powell didn't want this job anymore, it's a sham and a token, and Condoleezza's interpretation is just about as impotent. You would think that the Secretary of State of the United States could walk into the Middle East and say to Israeli government and Hezbollah, break it up boys or I'm going to send in the fifth Fleet to separate you to children until you can learn to behave. With the power that she's got all she should really have to do is make it clear to both of these warring factions that she's not playin. I guess it's too bad that Condi isn't a mother, then she'd know exactly how to deal with unruly rambunctious children who act up. And perhaps thousands of lives would be saved. Personally I think if Condi had any real intestinal fortitude and sense of responsibility to the Constitution and the people of the United States, she would immediately seize control of the government and instruct the Marine guards at the White House to arrest George W. Bush and the rest of his comedy team playing at being a presidential administration, charge them with high treason, crimes against humanity, and conspiring to bring about biblical Armageddon. Then lock them away in some deep dark hole and feed them bread and water until the their trials roll around. Now that would impress me, she'd get my vote for president in the next election. Bully!

For whatever reasons, for better or worse, appearances matter. Condi and Jeralyn accept that truth and the importance of it, and work within it. Someone pointed out Condi's speaking voice - that it has a tone which sounds unconfident. I agree with that assessment. I've only heard JM speak on TV a few times, and while she speaks thoughtfully and considerately, I thought I heard some hoarseness that was very mildly off-putting - from smoking maybe? (No offense JM) Speaking of speaking, I heard an analysis on the radio of the speech patterns of several public figures years ago. They took a recorded paragraph or so of these speakers and deleted everything that was actual "speech" (words) and let everything else that was vocalized remain. They played recordings of what remained and it was amazing to hear how many "ums," "uhs," "ers," "uh-huhs," etc., that are included in a spoken paragraph. Then they played Arianna Huffington's analysis. Nothing. Pure silence. She speaks absolutely nothing but words. An organized mind. Striking.

She also speaks fluent Russian, another impressive talent, gotten, no doubt, through working her ace off. That said, and despite these obvious abilites, I simply don't find her intellect to be sound, especially her political mind. She reminds me of Arianna Huffington during her conservative days. And I can only hope she has as comprehensive a turnaround as Arianna, as well.

Squeaky Thanks for posting the link to that story. Looks like Condi's conscience is getting to her. I wonder how much longer she's going to be able to stomach dishing out the Bush administration's dishonest policy in the Middle East. I imagine a crisis of conscience is approaching for her, the point at which she must choose between the oath she took to uphold the Constitution and protect the United States, and her loyalty to George W. Bush, for these loyalties continue to be in direct opposition to one another. . Perhaps Condi is finally beginning to realize that the administration long ago placed their loyalty to some extreme conservative ideology ahead of their loyalty to the United States of America. This is what makes their convictions and actions the very definition of the word treason. Their obvious willingness to set aside the Constitution and the safety of the American people in order to follow the neocon dream wherever it would lead them, even to the destruction and ruin of us all. Secretary Rice knows exactly what occurred in the White House when the Bush administration began making its plans for war in Iraq after 9/11, she was perhaps present during those conversations in which the president and his advisers made the decision to mislead and deceive the people of the United States in order to take us so recklessly into this ill-conceived war. Perhaps now Condi will find the courage to stand up and expose this administration and their corruption, for if any one American is in a position to save this Republic and pull us back from the brink on which we now teeter, it is Secretary Rice. I can only hope against hope that she has the deep strength of character and love for her country it would undoubtedly require at this point to stand up and do the right thing. Perhaps I'm naïve to even think this possibility, perhaps Condoleezza believes that she made her choice and it's too late to turn back now, but it's never too late to stand up for the truth if you believe in something. Should she find the courage to choose the path of morality and complete disclosure, I say to her now for all the world to witness, I will stand by your side Madam Secretary and champion you against all comers. Let God defend the righteous. Blessed are the peacemakers.

More from the NYT about Condi's image as she struggle with the administration over the bombing of Lebanon.
The popular image of Ms. Rice as America's impeccably clad, composed, dashing diplomat -- an image she and her aides have encouraged -- has given way to a more somber figure struggling, like many of her predecessors, to resolve a Middle East conflict. Ms. Rice's carefully scripted talking points have sometimes fallen flat. Her comment that the Israel-Lebanon war represented the "birth pangs of a new Middle East"-- coming at a time when television stations were showing images of dead Lebanese children -- sparked ridicule and even racist cartoons. A Palestinian newspaper, Al Qud, depicted Ms. Rice as pregnant with an armed monkey, and a caption the read, "Rice speaks about the birth of a new Middle East."
Now there is an image for you. Do you think that the "armed monkey" could be the Chimp himself clad in his Texas gunslinger outfit? NYT
