Late Night : Tom Petty Bashes Bush and Iraq War

Tom Petty has not been one to frequently mix his politics into his music. I guess drastic times call for drastic measures -- and I applaud him for this interview in the new Esquire [Via Down with Tyranny]:

"The war in Iraq is shameful. Whether you're pro or con Bush, you've got to admit: The guy lied. And he continues to do so. I can't understand why he's just not run out on a rail. To send somebody's kids off and have them killed for no good reason--he's going to have his day in hell for that. I wouldn't want that karma.

When you kill somebody's little sister with a missile, he's going to hate you forever. And the next generation will hate you even more.

So, for Tom Petty tonight, here's Won't Back Down -- performed with George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Thanks Jeralyn! Great song, very appropriate, and we need the tunes in these times. Can't think of Petty without remembering him on Dylan's big anniversary show years ago. He sang Everybody Must Get Stoned WAY better than Dylan ever did. It was wild. Maybe the surviving Wilburys will put together something even more pointed!

Pretty blunt. Pretty clear. And pretty hard to misunderstand or deny. Anyone denying a share of responsibility for the existence of terrorism, or saying things like (or beliveing things like): "We have entered a great ideological conflict we did nothing to invite." as bush said in the January '06 SOTU speech needs to realize that Petty is saying there what most of the country and the world already knows and feels, and needs to listen carefully. Denial only makes the problem worse. Reality "Won't back Down".

Sidebar: Ringo Starr wasn't a member of the Traveling Wilburys.

Jeralyn, I'm partial to the 1988 Petty/Dylan collaborative tune "Jammin' Me", you ever see the video? Good political rock. Been searching for it online, but alas no link.

Surely Mr. Petty has been playing guitar too much and doesn't understand that we're fighting a war on terror here. And we're winning, of course. We've got to stay the course, dude. Geez. Seriously though, I'm glad to see some very sensible comments from a talented musician.

Wow, how brave. Virtually every Hollywood tool has given in on the fight against the Islamic Nazis and let someone else do it, while praising themselves for having the courage to condemn Bushchimphitler. And now Tom Petty has thrown in the towel, too! What a stud. How pathetic.
