Rove: Bush to Veto Stem Cell Research Bill

After his speaking gig in Aspen, Karl Rove came to Denver for a sit-down interview with the editorial board of the Denver Post. What he said:

  • Bush will exercise the first veto of his presidency to jettison the stem cell research bill if it passes the Senate (it's already passed the House.) The chief sponsors of the bi-partisan House bill, Colorado's Diana DeGette and Delaware's Michael Rogers, upon hearing the news, are now asking for their own pow-wow with Bush. Rove said there are not enough votes to overcome a veto. DeGette's comment: I'm appalled that Bush would use the first veto of his presidency to veto a bill that could help 110 million people and their families."

The Post editorial board, by the way, supports the stem cell research bill and has asked both Colorado Senators to vote for it.

  • On immigration: Rove says he could see the President agreeing to a "phasing in" of his guest worker program after an enforcement bill is in place. And here's a crummy idea under consideration:
  • Rove says the tide will turn for Republicans and they will maintain control of Congress in 2006. He predicts "surprise upsets." As to public sentiment on Iraq, he says:

From his sit-down, Rove was headed off to yet another Republican fundraiser in Parker, Colorado.

"I'm appalled that Bush would use the first veto of his presidency to veto a bill that could help 110 million people and their families." - Diana DeGette
    Well she's the only one.

He has threatened a veto before and then just settled for signing statements. What he says now means nothing. Idle osturing, until Rove tells him what to do. We'll see.

Two words. Snowflake Babies. Bush will veto this, not because of what Rove says, but because of his belief system. His stem cell research speech was the best of his Presidency. Well thought out, articulate, and with a consistent message. This is something he believes, not a political manoveur.

I agree with BigTex - I don't view this as a political move. I do, however, disagree completely with the president on this one. I respect his opinions on the subject but I think the potential is just too great to limit the research at this point.

Tex & Croc, To genuinely respect a differing opinion, I must feel it comes from informed and competent rationality. The president has NO record whatsoever of being able think this way in even a remedial manner. He doesn't write any of his speeches, he hasn't any rhetorical ability, this is manufactured b.s. at it's finest. This is a calculated political move, first and foremost, to appeal to that old "base" of his, who make up the vast majority of the opposition to stem cell research. He ain't running again, so he can just ram it home and not give a whit that the vast majority of free Americans find his position inhumane. That his stand on this matter seems informed by having styrofoam in his brain doesn't help. The number of frozen embryos in fertility labs alone, that will be DESTROYED, which could be used for this research makes his position one of both intellectual AND moral vacancy. If he believed a word of this he would be an ARDENT environmentalist, more committed to it than anything, since poisoning actual living people with pollutants harms more people every day than anything else. Instead, he pays lip service about alternative energy sources and keeps up the destruction. The guy is half child, half puppet. The product of too much wealth and ease and comfort. Spoiled. And it rots the brain, boys.

Curious that Bush will now use the Veto power entrusted with his position. His defeat in the Supreme Court has forced him to obey the law. Long live the separation of power.

And the hits just keep on coming. Truly, the Bush treachery knows no bounds. In the final analysis, I have no doubt that history will mark George W. Bush as being ultimately responsible for more deaths than any other president in US history. If his attempts to assist in the global warming of our planet are successful, he may surpass Adolf Hitler and become responsible for more deaths than any leader in world history, perhaps he'll even bring about the demise of Homo sapiens as a species, along with the rest of the life on planet Earth. Nice going Mr. president
