Dog Handler Convicted

by TChris

Update: Cardona received a reduction in rank and a sentence of 90 days at hard labor.

original post:

Another Army dog handler has been convicted of committing military crimes at Abu Ghraib.

Sgt. Santos A. Cardona is the 11th soldier convicted of crimes stemming from the abuse of inmates at the prison in late 2003 and early 2004. Cardona, 32, of Fullerton, Calif., was convicted of dereliction of duty and aggravated assault for allowing his dog to bark within inches of a prisoner's face.

Cardona was acquitted of more serious charges, "including unlawfully having his dog bite an inmate and conspiring with another dog handler to frighten prisoners into soiling themselves." Cardona's defense counsel argued that Cardona's career depended on pleasing people who were monitoring the progress made at Abu Ghraib.

By late November, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary Paul Wolfowitz were said to have taken an intense interest in gathering intelligence from Abu Ghraib, even calling nightly to check on information, according to trial testimony.

We can choose to indict Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, et.al. now and come out smelling like heros or wait until a world court does it and take on a burden similar to the Germans. Our choice. Heros or dogs. Since most "mericans seem to enjoy licking their privates I am not hopeful.

I'm finishing a boo called "A Question of Torture" by Alfred W. McCoy and it really gives you two side to this whole issue of torture being used in the "war on terror". If any of you read, this is worth the 15 bucks.

so what he had stitches, it clearly says he was convicted for having let his dog bark too close to the mans face. it specifically says he was "acquitted of more serious charges". so, if he was guilty of the more serious charges, and let his dog bite the man, then convict him of that. if all he did was let his dog bark too close to the mans face, i think that is stupid. just one mans opinion.

Making a prisoner stand on a wood crate with his arms out and a hood over his head with fear of electric shock is also a great tactic.
    Ugh...

The question is when will the superiors who tacitly encouraged this kind of behavior, who winked and nodded and said "soften them up", when will THEY be brought to account for their role?

Great tactic for what? What is your strategic goal that this "tactic" of yours aims to achieve?

With all Bush fake apologies and promises to punish all those involved in the Abu Ghraib torture to the fullest extent of the law, at least this torturer was not promoted. No jail??? Still in the army???? No investigation of his superiors???? Bush is so utterly dishonest. His recent pseudo-apology rings particularly hollow after this pathetic trial. Bush said the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal was
"the biggest mistake that's happened so far, at least from our country's involvement in Iraq ... We've been paying for that for a long period of time
This will show the world how tough America is on torture. As if his notorious signing statement neutering the McCain anti torture amendment wasn't enough. This torturer will get a presidential award, guaranteed, or some perk from the WH. The whistleblowers, on the other hand, will serve long jail sentences and with dishonorable discharges.
The conviction means Cardona will lose his security clearance, and forfeit his right to serve as a military policeman. Consequently, he will be unable to continue as a dog handler, military sources said. Cardona hugged his military defense lawyer Major Kirsten Mayer, and civilian attorney Harvey Volzer, and bear-hugged friends and former comrades in the public gallery after the sentence was handed down.
