Soprano's Open Thread: Show 8

The episode tonight is JohnnyCakes.

Tony is tempted by a real-estate offer; Vito is wowed by an act of heroism; AJ looks to "diversify."

I thought last week's episode was just so-so. Maybe that's because the two weeks before that were so good. I suspect A.J. will get into big problems tonight.

Let us know what you think of tonight's show.

Well, looks like your call on AJ was on target - he showed us his inner Fredo.

I agree w/your assessment that last weeks episode was a huge downer..This weeks wasn't bad..Vito coming to grips with his sexuality and AJ's self-absorbed life were the main story lines..and you hit it on the head..AJ is in deep doo-doo. Tony's whole "new way of looking at things" is affecting his business life..and will be a main theme for the rest of the season don't you think?

Yes, his new outlook will definitely have others wanting to take him down. I wonder how long Christopher will stay loyal. It was good to see Dr. Malfi with her shrink again, like the old days. Vito's days look kind of numbered too I think AJ's just starting on his downward spiral.

Am I the only one who starts every show with a prayer that AJ will be whacked? He's the most obnoxious character on the show, and has been since the beginning.

I thought the wise guys complaining about the neighborhood going to pot while they picked up their weekly money was a nice touch. I have always hated the ER chic so I was glad to see her get rebuffed. Hopeful she is done now. I liked the New Hampshier stuff but I don't want it to continue forever. B show and a B+ season so far. It will get better. Anyone who's a real fan knows things heat up as the end gets closer.

Maybe you missed last night's episode with Tony explaining to AJ what's right and wrong. The show is about so much more than just criminals. Why don't you try watching sometime.

tell me, have you personally ever dealt with real criminals like tony & co?
I have...my bookie is connected. And to be honest, he's treated me fairly. Fairer than I have been treated by cops and banks...but that's just my experience. And nearly all of my dealers over the years have sold me quality goods at a fair price...though I did buy a lemon from a used car dealer once. I say legalize drugs, gambling, and prostitution...and put a large quantity of gangsters out of business, or into legtitimate business that is regulated and taxed.

Like I said...just my experience. Trying to lend some perspective to your diatribe against the glorification of criminals, when much of the blame lays on the law itself. Put them out of business to make the law worthy of respect. When the honest man has to go underground to buy booze/drugs or place a bet, it fosters disrespect for the law. Maybe then I could respect and appreciate police more instead of fearing and despising them...and identifying with Tony Soprano.

perhaps Igor is recovering russian mobster on lam in U.S. after his black market Range Rover business is busted up by Interpol? perhaps after a 12 hour long day working now as house painter, he sits down with his stolen satellite tv and becomes envious of Tony S. and crew. then he sits down to read blog that tracks dealings of elected criminals that make the Soprano crew look like rank amateurs? then he just longs for home even more?

Igor, I'm as conservative as they come but entertainment is entertainment. Not glorification. By your theory we shouldn't watch movies about anyone that is imoral and enjoys it. This would apply to criminals, soldiers, murderers, theives, alchohalics, drug dealers and porn stars. The simple fact is people enjoy watching and observing activities they would never do themselves. For you to believe that the Saprano's glorifies mob lifestyle is as simplistic as me saying Boogie Nights glorifies the porn lifestyle. Both show the good and bad. How can you tell a story and leave out the good? Hopefully this answers your question but you are starting to sound like one of those bible thumpers who want to pull Barney off the screen because it glorifies witchcraft.

still why do you identify yourself with a soprano - a criminal?
Because the law says I'm a criminal.
So the law's flawed (and grossly so in the areas you mentioned). Does that mean it's ok/cool to be a criminal?
Yes it's OK...obviously and ridiculously unjust laws should be disobeyed.
Don't you have any internal moral strength?
I believe I do. I see little corrolation between the law and moral strength though.
Or is your position like: "I will be good when the world(law) is perfect" ?
No, my position is I consider myself to be a good, honest, "couldn't hurt a fly" person...yet the law says I'm a criminal...so something must be wrong with the law.

You assume correct igor. I guess I identify with Tony Soprano because I am forced (because of the unjust laws) to deal with characters like Tony Soprano. And as I said, in my limited personal experience, I found the underworld businessman to be no more or less inherently "good" or "bad" than the so-called legitimate businessman. Now, if the unjust laws we seem to be in agreement on were changed or repealed, I could jump on board and call for the arrest/condemnation of a guy like Tony Soprano. But as it is now I need a Tony Soprano to live life as I want to live it. I mean I can't take my own bets, or grow my own smoke without greatly increasing the risk of being chained and caged myself.

A comment on the verisimilitude of the gay subplot: The blossoming relationship between Vito and the hot short-order cook (Johnny Cakes?) is completely unrealistic. I'm sorry to be so cynical, but a man like Johnny Cakes would never be interested in an unattractive, obese man with a limp. That's all I have to say.
