Time: White House to Welcome Alito Diversion

Time Magazine reports the White House intends to play up the debate over Judge Sam Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court -- hoping it will distract us from the Washington scandals of Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff.

Republican officials say they are so worried about the Abramoff problem that they are now inclined to stoke a fight with Democrats over the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court in an effort to turn the page from the lobbying investigation. Outside groups plan to spend heavily, and the White House will engage in some tit for tat with Democrats as the hearings heat up.

Fat chance. We'll be reporting on both all week, and encourage everyone else not to let up on the scandal news while they cover the Alito hearings.

Please don't throw me in that briar patch! The more we talk about Alito, the more people know about him, and the more they will object to his being put on the court. That's fine with me. The minute Alito is on the court, you can forget about Abramoff or Fitz or anyone else making a difference.

Avedon, no one Bush nominates will be anything but a right wing ideologue. We're in this situation because he's in the White House. The best way to ensure better judges for the next generation is to work to take back the White House in 2008. Taking back Congress in 2006 takes us one step closer. Keeping the spotlight on the scandals and the Republican culture of corruption may accomplish this.

TL, your argument seems to suggest that if the administration does enough bad things we have to let them get away with some of them. Why? Do we have domocrats in congress who can't walk and chew gum at the same time? Why can't they oppose the Alito nomination and make a stink about the Abramoff scandal and start a fight about the Patriot Act and Bush's illegal wiretaps. If the argument is that it will spread the Democrats too thin to fight on so many fronts, won't the Republicans be just as stretched trying to defend so many indefensible positions? If we don't fight the Alito nomination, we'll be stuck with him on the SCOTUS forever. Why give him a free pass just because there are other Bush scandals to deal with right now? Isn't that playing into Bush's hands? I would think that a full court press is a better strategy when the Administration is already on the defensive.

Cymro, she is saying we can do both. I'm just jubilant that they actually want to focus on Alito so we can talk about him too.

hoping it will distract us from the Washington scandals With the barrage of hits they've been taking, they'd probably "welcome" something even on the scale of Katrina, or worse, by now. And probably engineer it if they could...

OK, that's good! I misunderstood the response to your post. Sorry TL, I should have known better!
