Dem Calls Repub "Howdy Doody Looking Nimrod" During Budget Debate

by Last Night in Little Rock

Every once and awhile, a Member of Congress from Arkansas does something to get noticed. Making the rounds this weekend in Arkansas is Rep. Marion Berry (D-AR,1) calling a Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL,12) a "Howdy Doody Looking Nimrod" in a floor speech on November 17th complaining about Republican budget items and tax cuts that Berry complained that the far younger looking Putnam would be paying for himself.

It is reported here on Daily Kos, which does not have the full flavor. The Congressional Record for November 17th is incomplete and does not have it yet. C-Span Junkies caught it, however. The statewide newspaper, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, also has not carried it.

Thank you, Founding Fathers, for the Speech and Debate Clause. U.S. Const., Art. I, § 6, cl. 1.

This privilege led to other far uglier exchanges on the floor last week, which have been recounted elsewhere.

But, for Rep. Berry, thank you for speaking your mind. How refreshing for a change. Now; the rest of you: Speak up.

And, Rep. Putnam does look like Howdy Doody.

    You in Arkansas think this is cool I guess? This ain't the schoolyard you know....

    Well, does he jump when the puppeteer pulls the string, and let some guy do the talking for him? If so, Howdy Doody he is. And the rest of them are the Flub-a-dub (not to mention Phineas T. Bluster, mayor of Doodyville). The only sane one is Clarabelle, the clown. Ed

    ED, I'm sure he does jump when the puppeteer pulls the string. Who's the puppeteer? Wild guess? Maybe AIPAC?

    If you haven't seen it, here's the link. The money quote is at 1:45, but the whole thing is a nice smackdown, with enthsiastic applause at the end.

    It's not nice to make fun of the way people look. ;_;

    This is the best the Left can do? Sign of the times, I guess. Um, congrats.

    He really looks like Danny Bonaduce. Minus - assumingly so - the substance abuse and publicity-based disfunctionality.

    TNR has a link to the video here. I would link directly but I'm not sure how to do that to a video file. It's fantastic and Putnam comes on at the end and confirms Berry's description as hilariously accurate.

    By the way JM, this article is one reason why I'm coming here less (only one). This is obviously a plant article to counter the Jean Schmidt insult to a vet, and you fell for it. Maybe it's a slow news day, with only five more US troops and 50 more Iraqis lying dead in the streets of Iraq. Or some female bobblehead on Wolf's bobblehead show saying that we are holding back on deploying troops, while my neighbors in the Marine 2/5 are deploying this week for the 3rd time. You're getting soft. This is not about the politics of crime.

    Well, Berry is an interesting character... The one of the last true blue dogs. He had voted against a bill allowing people to have privately-funded(nothing involving govement money at all) abortions in oversees military facilties, but He knows he can get by on the fact that most of the folks in the state are pissed on Iraq, and so uses that, but he avoids talking about any other polarizing issues like the plague, so he's become most conservate Democrat congressman in the state working in easily it's bluest district. That way he can simply co-opt whatever issue that pitiful Republican candidate of the moment tries to use, and squash them like a bug, and has done so for the past 5 elections. Frankly, it's annoying and brilliant at the very same time. Too bad he didn't get the memo about Democrats aren't supposed to be reactionaries.

    Berry looks like Howdy Doody. Look here and decide for yourself.
