Alito Speaks to Senators on Roe v. Wade

Judge Alito is making the rounds of Senators on the Judiciary Committee. Today, several senators expressed contentment with his answers about Roe v. Wade. They say he believes it is very strong precedent. Of course, that is no guarantee of how he would vote on the issue.

"He basically said ... that Roe was precedent on which people, a lot of people, relied, and had been precedent now for decades and therefore deserved great respect," [Joseph]Lieberman told reporters.

When will the Senators move on to ask questions about other issues? Half the cases before the Supreme Court are criminal cases. Why aren't the Senators asking him to demonstrate that he would be fair in deciding these cases despite having spent his entire career before becoming a judge as a prosecutor or attorney for the Government?

While I think that the questions about the scope of the powers of the government may very well arise, I am not so sure about strictly criminal cases. The former is a hot topic because of the Patriot Act and the treatment of detainees, but the latter is always not very popular. I mean it doesn't look good in the media when you try to push too hard on behalf of the "criminals". I don't say that Alito will not be asked about that, but it's not likely that someone in the Senate would really make an issue out of it. I may be wrong, but that's my gut feeling. Just look at Virginia - when you are opposed to the death penalty, suddenly Adolf Hitler becomes alive again. It's sad, but I think it resonates with a significant number of people. You get credits for being tough on crime, and you are not tough on crime when you fight for the rights of the so called criminals - be they real criminals, or just wrongly accused.

Has anyone else noticed that George Bush always says Alito's name like it was one word? Samalito.

Lieberman, such a good repugnicon dog, always willing to wag his tale when they call. I agree, the role of government and the limits to its powers are the root issues here. I wonder how many are at all fooled by "deserved great respect". After all I just got done respectfully answering No to many of the Governator's proposals. What I think of respect is that if the repugnicons want me to respect their message, they should not send their messanger puppy to tell me.
