Pete Rose's Son Pleads Guilty in Steroid Case

Baseball player Pete Rose's 35 year old son, Pete Rose Jr., was arrested this morning on a charge of distributing GBL, a steroid related drug. He also pleaded guilty this morning, purusant to a plea deal. The prosecutor says Rose will be sentenced to between 21 and 24 months in jail.

The Drug Enforcement Administration said Rose's arrest was part of a larger investigation into a major GBL trafficking organization. Rose surrendered to authorities shortly before entering his plea.

The indictment said Rose admitted he received GBL from a person in Tennessee while a member of the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.

The facts as laid out by the Government were these:

According to evidence presented to Judge Robert Echols, Rose began purchasing GBL in July 2001, receiving about five cases from July 2001 to May 2002. Rose told investigators he was using it as a sleep aid because he had been having trouble with some knee injuries. Rose also admitted to selling the drug.

....DEA agents seized about 280 gallons of GBL from a storage unit in Murfreesboro in January 2004. Further investigation revealed that Murfreesboro resident Bruce Michael Wayne was a nationwide distributor of the drug. The DEA learned Wayne was supplying Rose Jr. with the drug and that Rose was distributing it to teammates, Payne said.

Rose's lawyer had this to say:

"This is a tragedy. Anyone who knows this young man knows he is a very, very fine young man," Rose's attorney, Jeffrey Brody, said outside the courthouse. "The use of this stuff is common. It's used as a sleep aid by many people in sports. And he got caught in a time warp because it was legal up to 2000. He came forward and immediately confessed and accepted responsibility."

    possible proof that stupid is genetic.

    "The use of this stuff is common." Wow, is the "everybody's doin' it" defense often sucessful? OT: The grouping of steroids with narcotics under the law was opposed by the AMA and nearly every medical body. The time spent prosecuting illegal steroid use is almost certainly the least productive use of law enforcement and the judicial system.

    Looks like another reason Pete Sr will get to sit by Shoeless Joe for a long, long time outside the waiting room to the Hall of Fame... Hard to have much respect for the HoF, though, when they keep out a guy who was betting on baseball games and another who got 12 hits in a series he was supposed to be fixing, but they admitted that brutal bastard Ty Cobb, who had beaten up a handicapped man, attempted to strangle a woman, and threw another woman down a flight of stairs. And that's just the short list of his savagery. Gotta wonder about the priorities and values up at Cooperstown...
