Sad Sunday

by TChris

Harry Knox, director of the religion and faith program at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, on tomorrow's broadcast of Justice Sunday II, starring Tom DeLay and James Dobson:

"There is always a great sadness whenever faith leaders call for a theocracy," Knox said during a telephone interview. "They want to impose their particular brand of religion on the country. It is so limiting that it is very disappointing to all of us, and dangerous because what they are calling for is a limitation on the right of GLBT people and the rights of women to control their own bodies and approaches to international relationships tending toward war and not peace."

Knox's op-ed "Injustice Sunday" is here.

Patriot Crusaders, being in a special class, do not have to practice what they preach. They believe that God's law of natural selection is at work here. Their mission is to squash all those sub human heathens to cleanse the world so Jesus can come back.... oh, and have a hell of a good time on earth before they ascend.

DriveDemocracy.org has an interesting find: "The Rev. Jerry Sutton, vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, claims in the Nashville Tennessean that our event is intended to censor and victimize right wing religious followers." Goodness. Some of the 'religious' blogs & sites I read have some good stuff, The Revealer; The Faithful Progressive has a great piece on a woman pastor, Rev. Jennifer Kottler who is Director of Outreach/Education for the group called, Protestants for the Common Good. Have to take a break from banging my head on, well - any surface - after reading some of the comments on the Cindy Sheehan threads.

I had not heard of Art Bell...pretty out there stuff, but far less frightening and more believable than this . Fringe looneys are not as scary to me as mainstream looneys, especially ones that can make decisions affecting my life.

On the bright side, a NYT Aug 6th post, that was buried deep in the paper, gives me hope that religious groups can open dialogue, rather than typically shut it down. "The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. announced Friday that it would press four American corporations to stop providing military equipment and technology to Israel for use in the occupation of the Palestinian territories, and that if the companies did not comply, the church would take a vote to divest its stock in them."

Squeaky, there are a lot of religious groups that call for moderation and fellowship, including, but not limited to, muslims. They don't make the news. Some on this site have constantly exclaimed 'where are the moderate muslims!?' They ('moderate' muslims, christians, jews, budhists, wiccans ... et al,) constantly speak out in my town. What I want to ask is "where are the newspapers, radio stations, tv stations!?" Just because the 'moderates' preach peace and understanding they aren't considered 'news'. After all, it if bleeds, it ledes.

TL, respectfully, I would suggest that this is not 'Sad Sunday', but another "Sunday, Bloody Sunday." These folks want nothing less than a theocracy, regardless that that is against all of Jesus's teachings. The religious extremists are currently responsible for most of the world's conflicts. It used to be blamed on 'godless communism.' New boss, same as the old boss.
