Patriot Act Hearings Today

Hearings on re-authorizing the Patriot Act will be held today by two House Committees, the House Judiciary Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The ACLU says there has been a bait and switch (received by e-mail).

The ACLU called for legislation that would protect freedoms, noting that in the aftermath of 9/11, the House Judiciary Committee had initially produced a bipartisan bill, with unanimous support, which was mindful of civil liberties. However, that bill was switched with a measure containing powers long sought by the Department of Justice - and which became the Patriot Act.

"Congress has a unique opportunity to fix the mistakes they made with the Patriot Act the first time around," said Lisa Graves, ACLU Senior Counsel for Legislative Strategy. "Unfortunately, the proposals we're seeing mimic the same flaws of the initial Patriot Act - they continue to place extraordinary powers in the hands of the executive with very diminished oversight by both Congress and the judiciary. Congress should enact modest changes - like the bipartisan Safe Act, which strikes the right balance in securing the nation and protecting our freedoms."

More available here.

"Congress rightfully put sunsets on some provisions of the Patriot Act, so that lawmakers could reexamine the extraordinary powers when cooler heads would prevail. We cannot afford to sacrifice the very freedoms we seek to protect. Although the House Judiciary Committee’s base bill does not expand the Patriot Act in the unwise and unwarranted way the Senate Intelligence Committee proposed, it can and must be modified to ensure that Patriot powers are focused on terrorists, and not ordinary Americans whose civil liberties must be protected to preserve our American values."

Why have a hearing? No one in Washington has the courage to stand tall for freedom in the face of a few fundamentalist mass murderers. It's "safer" to do away with freedom. My govt. makes me sick. The Patriot Act was a victory for terrorists, if you believe that "they hate us for our freedom". The Patriot Act gives us less freedom and less protectiuon from tyranny, isn't that what the govt. tells us the terrorists want?

Kdog, I swear I was thinking of that same argument last night!!!!!!!! They hate us for our freedom, don't let them win, shop. Oh yeah, here is the patriot act, we are going to implement some freedom restrictions. Makes no sense that they are not called on this nonsense by the MSM.

yes-they are waiting at the end of their seats for the renewal decision. they must have loved England for allowing them to spew hatred in mosques and on the street, remain in the country without deportion despite serious crimes in other countries and generally restrict "hate speech" against Islam. Oh wait, that didn't work either.

In the wake of the London bombings, no doubt Congress will move to expand provisions of The Patriot Act, not curtail them. Hey Ed, newsflash the London bombers were British citizens, born and bred. You can't deport citizens. 'Ordinary' lives of bomb suspects Closed intolerant society's filled with ignorance and fear that restrict free speech are not the answer, they're the problem.

actually, meaningless points Aaron. where did their radicalization occur? their mosque, perhaps? maybe they were radicalized by too much preaching of peace, love and brotherhood at it. or do you think they just woke up one day and strapped on bombs? you can't deport citizens-you certainly can deport the mullahs and other radicals that aren't citizens. or would that offend your sense of justice as well. since matthew hale/tim mcveigh were homegrown here in the US, should we sympathize with the root causes of their respective hatreds and do nothing or aggressively investigate him and his cohorts before they commit crimes. I guess the former in your wisdom.

They don’t hate us because of our freedom. They hate us because we are infidels.
