Update: New York Times Reporter Judith Miller was jailed today. So her source and Cooper's source are not the same - since Cooper's relented and agreed to let Cooper testify about him. How many of these Senior White House officials are there?

Update: Cooper's waiver is for the grand jury. He won't tell the public who it is. Miller is going to jail in the DC area - Fitzgerald may charge Miller with criminal contempt - even obstruction of justice is not off the table. (from press conferences)

Matthew Cooper has agreed to testify in the grand jury investigation. He told the judge that today. So it looks like no jail for Matthew.

In an about-face, Cooper told Hogan that he would now cooperate with a federal prosecutor's investigation into the leak of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame because his source gave him specific authority to discuss their conversation. "I am prepared to testify. I will comply" with the court's order, Cooper said.

Cooper took the podium in the court and told the judge, "Last night I hugged my son goodbye and told him it might be a long time before I see him again."

"I went to bed ready to accept the sanctions" for not testifying, Cooper said. But he told the judge that not long before his early afternoon appearance, he had received "in somewhat dramatic fashion" a direct personal communication from his source freeing him from his commitment to keep the source's identity secret.

    everybody is sooooo worked up over the reporters giving up their sources or going to jail. If the press was truly reporting the facts about what was happening in our country, not just the innuendo, the falsehoods, the lies (yes you judith miller) and planted stories to further along an agenda, I would be all for them protecting sources. When you can't trust the press to tell the truth in their paper or magazine then you need to put them under oath and hang consequences over their heads. The consequence of thousands dead and billions spent doesn't seem to work.

    Doesn't sound like Rove is the leaker.

    So say I had someone tell me juicy details of an inside deal in the IT sector (which is what I blog about, mostly). Say I posted those details, and refused to name my source. In an investigation of insider trading, should I be shielded? If not, what makes Judith Miller special? The fact that her ID says "NY Times"?
