What is it With Tom Cruise and Drugs?

Tom Cruise had a "passionate" interview on the Today Show with Matt Lauer this morning. You can watch the video here (it starts at 7 min. 45 seconds.)

So what is it with Tom Cruise and drugs? First, in an interview with der Spiegel weeks ago, he claimed to be personally curing drug addicts through Scientology. Now he rants against anti-depressants and psychiatry - saying the first are just a mask and the second is a pseudo-science - and he's an expert in these areas.

Tom Cruise is actually doing us all a favor. He's doing more to drive people from Scientology than all the proselytizing against it ever could.

So who are you going to believe? The vast medical conspiracy or Tom Cruise and Scientology? I'll choose the former if I'm sick. Sorry, Tom.

Update: Roger Friedman has a good take on the Lauer-Cruise Today Show interview.

Quite simply, he has unleashed himself from his controlling manager and now he's getting his full loon on. Anti-psychiatry is a core tenet of Scientology, probably because psychiatric treatment is the best alternative for most of the people who seek out Scientology...

I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but a friend of mine really is .... was. She saw an interview with him somewhere within the last several weeks where he dogged Brook Shields for doing something about her post-partum depression. She saw the interview this morning and was totally disgusted. She's a Nurse Practitioner and she knows the value of medication; she deals with psychiatric patients. It's not to devalue a holistic approach by any means but medicine and medication can be and are necessary. My bud said she was so angry she could have spit after watching the exchange. She thought Matt Lauer did a great job of holding it together.

Tom Cruise...thespian, hansom with white teeth and all, and also a nutty cult member. In other words he is rich, bored and stupid, publicly so. But then again it just may be love.... I guess when you're rich and famous there are many cults: Secularism, Khabbalism and Scientology, etc. You gotta love ol' L. Ron Hubbard. What'a rainmaker he was now wasn't he?.

Tom is setting his goals too low. He needs to give up on curing drug addiction and start curing stupidity.

Never been much of a T. Cruise fan, with the exception of the film "Taps", primarily for the war his character exits stage left. He's in the news, and doing everything he can to spread the word of L. Ron Hubbard, and how all human faults stem from an ancient alien warlord named Xenu. L. Ron Hubbard, who loved bad sci-fi so much, he based a religion on it. Thankfully, Cruise is scaring people away from those yammerheads.

Having had friends who were destroyed by drugs, and having friends who were destroyed by Scientology (geez, you should see their temple on Hollywood Blvd), it's a tough choice, if those were the only ones available. I can't endorse the med community on this one, and Monsewer Cruise is not qualified in any way to give med opinions. I just hope in the future that we can target helpful therapy and drugs for those folks who will benefit by them. And not just the helpless ones who are targeted by religions and drug companies.

Well, whatever works for Tom is his gig. I thought Mr. Lauer was very good at trying to carry on a meaningful discussion while being berated by Cruise.

Cruise is so rich, it probably doesn't matter, but you can envision his career winding down from something like this. It's not just audiences getting turned off by tempermental new-age know-it-alls. It's also producers getting turned off by tempermental new-age know-it-alls. And completion bond brokers worrying about their star having a mental melt down--which Cruise seems to be on the verge of.

Tom Cruise is a Joke He has no right to lash out as those who have a mental illness and are trying to do something about it so that they can stay a productive part of our society. If we were were to do it the scientology way there would be alot of people who could contribute if they had help, but would either be locked away, at home so miserable they can't function. Belive me, I know from where I speak. Antidepressive and antianxiety drugs have saved my life. So, Mr. Tom Cruise, perhaps you should open your mind and not be so judgemental on something you truly cannot understand until you go through it.
