    Has anyone been watching Hit Me Baby One More Time? In every show the front row of the crowd is loaded with pretty young women who are smiling, clapping, and singing along with the act. Do they hire models to populate those seats? Actually, the entire audience seems way too enthusiastic, I have to believe that the audience is hired to be part of the show. Does anyone have the inside scoop on this?

    There's more information on the teen whose parents are making him attend an ex-gay camp. Love in Action, which runs the camp and has ties to focus on the family, is now being investigated by the state of Tennessee, on allegations of child abuse.

    (Repeat from the Thursday open thread... but no biodiesel involved) Random question for any registered Democrats out there... What little, slightly off-beat, act of charity fits Democrats better than any other political ideology? I thought it might be fun and slightly profitable to sell t-shirts with political affiliations printed on them (Democrat, Neo-con, Socialist, etc...) and put $0.50 per purchase toward something appropriate for each affiliation. Any suggestions for the Democrat shirt? Thus far, I've got... Conservative: donated to a protestant church Neo-con: put towards care packages for troops in Iraq Liberal: given to local beggar Republic: invested in stock market Democrat: ??? Socialist: donated to state-run hospital Libertarian: spent however I see fit

    roy, what about 'Democrat: gave to the battered women's shelter' or, 'pledged to NPR'. And for what it's worth, I'm a bookseller and sent books and care packages to a kid I know in Iraq. And a Democrat. Probably a traitor, it would appear...

    Thanks Mr. Bill. Exactly my sentiment. Roy, Use your imagination more. Your attempt to get into the liberal mind was miserably poorly thought out. I'm as lefty as they come, my friend, as I gave to the USO, I gave to Greenpeace, I gave to the Leonard Peltier fund, and I tend to give wherever I think there is a legitimate need being served by an organization I respect.

    My choices were meant to be non-insulting. Obvious the neo-con choice underminded that. Troops in Iraq wouldn't need care packages if not for the neo-con mentality. I wonder if it's possible to buy the troops ammunition instead of comfort items. I think the United Negro College Fund sounds about right for Democrats. It catches the protecting-the-minority angle without being too controversial.
    It is revealing though that roy thinks the stock market is a charity.
    I had in mind Reaganesque trickle-down economics.

    You can run any diesel car on 100% vegetable oil. Check out my buddy's blog about his experience doing it with his 2005 VW Passat Diesel. I know I'm pumping this hard, but it's amazing to me. Power your car on 100% vegetable oil

    What's evyone guess for the price of gas at end of 2005 and end of 2006 My guess 2005 - about $3/gallon 2006 - about $4/gallon Flow out of Iraq, SA and the North Sea all decreasing. We've alienated Ven., and China is hungry for oil. Also, The ME will continue to become more unstable as the Iraqi trained fighters go back to their own country. Increased demand + decreased supply+increased instability = higher prices

    Soccerdad, At what price does privately-funded research and development into mass-market alternatives kick in? I ask, because with Bush in charge there will be no government-funded research. Wouldn't want to piss off his buddies, would he?

    Beck, Thats a good question. I don't have the answer. I think the first thing you will see is a change in auto buyer behavior. You won't be able to give those big SUVs away, my quess is that will start happening once you get over $3., pure conjecture.smaller, hybrids will be all the rage. The next issue is heating oil. I don't have any idea what the price will have to get to to make alternatives profitable. Here's another issue - plastics. Its going to get very interesting in the next year or two.

    Sdad...don't forget fertilizers. Without oil, we would see a massive reduction in crop yields. Oil is woven into every fabric of our lives.

    Certainly not. Nonetheless, I don't doubt your hired model theory. Ugly, or even normal looking people can't get on tv anymore. A perfect example are tv news anchors.

    Cheetah Most plastics come from resins originating from oil. There are people trying to make plastics from soy bean oil but I'm not sure at what stage they are at. kdog, yikes I forgot that. I'm thinking of building a barn and buying a plow horse ;-) Its back to the future

    Yes, the oil collapse should be interesting. and it will happen all over when all the coal fired electric plants run out of fuel. The consumtion is catching up quickly.

    I am a resident of Illinios and I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your support of the statement made by Sen. Durbin (D. IL) on the senate floor concerning prisoner abuse at Guantanamo bay. His words are being twisted by some in the media and on the other side of the aisle in the Senate. Please read his words for yourself at the link below and then if you agree with them please sign the petition at the other link that shows your support. Senator Durbin has always shown his support for the U.S. troops through his word and deeds, but now some want to portray him as a traitor and supporter of terrorists.     yeah, ppj... glad you have the secret to eternal fossil fuels in your a**. The rest of us worry that our cars, roads, fertilizers, plastics, hell the american way of life, runs on one substance. Which happens to have doubled in price recently. Sorry you are too foolinsh to see that there will be ramifications to our oil usage.

    SD - Actually, not a bad likeness, except the picture doesn't show the stick I use to whip disabled people and starving children from the door of my palatial retirement compound, catfish pond and BBQ Stand. (Fresh vegetables every Wednesday.) et al - Shall I point out a few things? It was and is the envirnomental wackos of the Left who have prevented the construction of nuclear power plants. It was and is the environmental wackos of the Left who have demanded that coal fired power plants be converted to natural gas. It was and is the environmental wackos of the Left who have delayed drilling in ANWAR, not to mention off the coasts and in the Gulf. It was and is the environmental wackos of the Left who have prevented new oil refineries from being built for around 30 years. (Hint: That's were the evil crude is turned into g a s o l i n e.) It was and is the environmental wackos of the Left who have caused dams to be torn down and prevented new ones freom being built. I mean what do you want? Clean electric power from dams or to feel good about fish? But, is the sky falling? I think we will muddle through. Several younger people I know have indicated a fair amount of anger with the No Nothings who have brought us this, so maybe another election cycle will cleans the national palate of the residue deposited by these wackos, and we can get back to letting technology give us a "better living through chemistry." So until then, please feel free to enjoy the results of Borking every judge who might, if appointed, ruled against these wackos. And, as the local government siezes your home to sell the wood in it to be used in fireplaces and stoves, don't be upset that the pollution that it causes is worse than anything you have ever seen. As for me, I have my eye on the Cadillac SUV down the road owned by a Professor of Inidian History at one of the local universities. As soon as gas gets to $4.00 a gallon I am sure he will no longer be able to afford the 100 mile rountrip commute and he will willing to sell it at a huge discount. But, being the nice ogre that SD has determined I am, I will let the Professor peel off and keep his "Save the Whales" bumper sticker. Properly dried, it will serve as excellent kindling to start a fire in his newly installed Frankling Stove.
