Blogger Michael Berube had an emergency appendectomy Friday. He could use your get well wishes, his wife said it was "hairy."

Update: Michael is home and resting comfortably. His sense of humor is intact as you can tell from his description of his "hairy" appendectomy.

    The recovery can be tough depending on the condition of the appendix. Mine popped when I was 16 and it took about 6 weeks to get back to baseline. Best wishes.

    I had one of those last year. I was out of the hospital in twelve hours. Mainly because twice in twelve hours, in my groggy post-anesthitic state, I was still able to catch the nurses just as they were about to inject me with a drug that would have likely killed me due to an allergy that was clearly marked in the chart that the doctor on call apparently never reads before he writes orders. I figured if I was going to be neglected, I might as well be doing it at home. Even that short stay still had a bill for almost $20,000 out of pocket because the hospital used out-of-network staff--so only the ER visit, the surgeon's fee, and the overnight stay were covered. 6 surgical assistants, the anesthesiologist, CT scan, lab work, and two ancillary physicians were not covered. So much for the $600/mo we paid for health insurance for two people. Fortunately some of the physicians waived their fee for me since I was unemployed, and the anesthesiologist's claim was denied because he failed to file within 90 days, so I was able to get away with only paying $13,500 out-of-pocket. What a bargain! I wasn't using that 401k, anyway. Let's hope his surgery was laparoscopic like mine was-- smaller scar and much faster recovery (2-3 weeks!). And let's hope he's not at Presbyterian/St. Luke's in Denver, and that he doesn't have United Healthcare.

    Actually it was Thursday. Several of us were meeting him for dinner here in New York and when he didn't show up one of our group tracked down his family and found this out. Michael's a great guy, a terrific father and writer. I hope he gets well soon.
