Strange Goings On in Germany

German police are trying to determine who is behind the strange practice of planting the U.S. flag with Bush's visage in dog poo....[via Mark at Norwegianity--don't miss the photograph.]

Police in Germany are hunting pranksters who have been sticking miniature US flags into piles of dog poo in public parks. Josef Oettl, parks administrator for Bayreuth, said: "This has been going on for about a year now, and there must be 2,000 to 3,000 piles of excrement that have been claimed during that time."

....We have sent out extra patrols to try to catch whoever is doing this in the act," said police spokesman Reiner Kuechler. "But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red handed." Legal experts say there is no law against using faeces as a flag stand and the federal constitution is vague on the issue.

I would have expected this sort of thing in France, where dog doo is famously ubiquitous (though not much of a problem, in my limited experience) rather than in Germany, where the folk consider themselves more disciplined. J.K. Galbraith related that his father, a Canadian politician, once climbed a mound of cow manure to address a crowd and apologized for speaking from the Tory platform.

Now finally THIS might get Bush into the Addam's Family. Or at least he might get invited to sit in the gaggle...tied up with the rest of them, of course. Does he have any good porno shots on the Internet? I hear that can help. But colonizing Germany one pile of poop at a time -- that, for the first time, is true genius. Rove must have put him up to it. It's diabolical.

My oh my. This looks like the perfect opportunity for some sh!tty puns... Is the problem getting excrementally worse over there? Or will they be able to feces the problem? Maybe they can clean things up one turd of the time, and look for the fecal point of the offender the other two turds of the time... You could throw a few of these at a supporter of this type of political statement if you want to see... (wait for it!) the sh!t hit the fan... OK, I'll stop now. (...and the crowd screams with enjoyment!)

Why do the police care? Is this a crime in Germany?

Any flag planted anywhere in Germany can be technically said to be planted in dog poo. The whole darned country is one big heap...

Would that they had thought of this little political statement oh...say 60 years ago? However, the humor, effort and relevance are noteworthy. Dankeschein Deutchlanders! (apologies for spelling)

Why do the police care? Is this a crime in Germany? Hmm. Let's read the post again, shall we: "But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red handed." Legal experts say there is no law against using faeces as a flag stand and the federal constitution is vague on the issue. So, apparently, no. (And, personally, I think a federal constitution that wasn't vague on the issue of using feces as a flag-stand would be a bit overly detailed for a constitution)

Pointless renderings and symbolism will lead to naught. Some Germans don't like Bush. Big Deal. They can march, protest, stick flags in poo, and rename their stupidly designed toilets Uncle Sams all they like- but has anyone ever noticed the Germans or the French actually doing anything MEANINGFUL to stop the US in ANYTHING? They knew we would go in Iraq with or without the UN backing. They are playing a rather shrewd game IMHO.

It's like shooting fish in a barrel. The wingers come out to make every anti-French or German statement that they can find in their briefings...and can't tell a joke to save their lives. If a pile of crap shoots up a flag like in Mars Attacks!, they're too busy saluting to hear the snickers. Psst, BJ, your goldfish are laughing at you. Maybe you should strangle them, in an epic War on Goldfish.

I easily laugh it off, but I can't say I'm down with it. My two cents, it's fine for an American to protest using the flag as creatively as they wish, but these Germans should take it easy.

I just said I easily laugh it off, easy Paul. If I had a problem with German policy, I'd show more class than sticking their flag in dung, that's my only point really.

Sorry to correct you, kdog, but I think they're protesting our policies since it's a version of our flag they're "planting".

I think I had it right mfox. I said if I had a problem with German policy and I wanted to protest it, I would show more class than planting their flag in crap. No big deal though, I laugh it off. It's even funnier when you think about that there are actual german civil servants out looking for these people.
