On a related anti-Bush note, we received these funny pictures by e-mail today.

More here. And here.

If you don't think these pictures are funny, you probably would be happier reading a different blog.

Sinclair Airs Portions of Anti-Kerry Film

Sinclair proceeded with plans to air some of the anti-Kerry film 'Stolen Honor' tonight. Did anyone see it? Was it any less anti-Kerry because of the "news format" they decided to adopt after protests caused the company stock to fall?

Buy a Whopper Today

Burger King has withdrawn all ads on Sinclair television stations for the day the John Kerry show is supposed to air:

It was a bigger burger--Burger King, in fact--”that lobbed the biggest grenade at Sinclair. The fast-food giant announced that it was withdrawing all its ads from all Sinclair stations all day on the date the weapon is broadcast--”now scheduled for Friday, October 22.

"Burger King wants to maintain neutrality during this election," spokesman Eric Anderson told Bill Carter of The New York Times.....This is believed to be the first time the fast-food giant has come out publicly against whoppers.

As Hesiod at Counterspin (where we found the news) says, "Go show Burger King some love." Remember, at Burger King, you can have it your way.

Sinclair Broadcasting Retreats on Airing Full Anti-Kerry Film

In a huge win for grass-roots activism, Sinclair Broadcasting has issued a statement in response to demands made by its shareholders in a letter underwritten by Media Matters, that it will not air the entire anti-Kerry film Stolen Honor without fair time for reply on the eve of the election. [Note: Sinclair back-pedals a bit by saying it never intended to air the entire film but Reuters and CBS Market Watch are more credible. More CBS here.]

As what Media Matters contends is a direct result of the uproar against the broadcasting network's plans, which would have resulted in the airing of the film to 25% of the country's view public, the station saw advertisers pulling ads and its stock tumble 17%, costing shareholders $105 million.

A group of shareholders threatened to file suit unless the company's stations gave equal time to the opposition.

Jon Stewart on Crossfire Video

Everybody's buzzing about Jon Stewart's Crossfire appearance tonight in which he lit into Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson. Stewart called Carlson "a dick." He called both of them "partisan hacks." Here's the official transcript from CNN.

Dave Cullen sums up the appearance. So does Salon.

The Free Speech Zone has the video of Jon Stewart's appearance on Crossfire tonight. If you have trouble getting into the site as I did, try these links.

Fox News' O'Reilly Embroiled in Sex Harassment Claim

Note: This is not a bash of Bill O'Reilly. It is just a reporting of news. Please don't trash Mr. O'Reilly in the comments, or I'll shut them down. He and everyone at Fox News have been extremely gracious and respectful in my contacts with them, and no one should judge Mr. O'Reilly before the facts come out at trial.

********************
In a pre-emptive strike against an anticipated $60 million sex harassment suit, Fox News Show Host Bill O'Reilly has sued former Fox producer Andrea Mackris and her lawyers for extortion and other claims. Mackris filed her lawsuit today.

Smoking Gun has the text of Mackris' complaint against O'Reilly and it's a doozy. From the detail included in the descriptions of telephone calls, it may be Ms. Mackris taped them.

O'Reilly denies her allegations and a says it's a shakedown.

NY Times: Bush 'Utterly Incoherent'

From Saturday's New York Times editorial :

And the president was utterly incoherent when asked about whom he might name to the Supreme Court in a second term. His comment about how he didn't want to offend any judges because he wanted "them all voting for me" was a joke - but an unfortunate one, given the fact that the president owes his job to a Supreme Court vote.

Mr. Kerry demonstrated, at the very minimum, a stature that was equal to the president's. If Mr. Bush was hoping to recover all the ground he lost last week, he failed in his mission.

The president seemed to fall back frequently on name-calling, denouncing his opponent as a liberal and a tool of the trial lawyers. "The president's just trying to scare," Mr. Kerry said. It will be another few weeks before we see how well that works.

Going back to the first debate, Frank Rich, writing in Sunday's New York Times, sees the first Bush-Kerry debate as rupturing Bush's hold--and he blames James Baker.

U.S. Seizes IndyMedia's Hard Drives

U.S. authorites obtained a federal order to seize Indymedia's webservers in the U.S. and London.

Why? IndyMedia is in the dark. Here's what Rackspace, its hosting company had to say:

"In the present matter regarding Indymedia, Rackspace Managed Hosting, a U.S. based company with offices in London, is acting in compliance with a court order pursuant to a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), which establishes procedures for countries to assist each other in investigations such as international terrorism, kidnapping and money laundering. Rackspace responded to a Commissioner’s subpoena, duly issued under Title 28, United States Code, Section 1782 in an investigation that did not arise in the United States. Rackspace is acting as a good corporate citizen and is cooperating with international law enforcement authorities. The court prohibits Rackspace from commenting further on this matter.

In other words, Rackspace is gagged. Note that a search warrant wasn't used. Only an administrative subpoena. An end run around the 4th Amendment. Here are the questions IndyMedia has at this time.

Freeway Blogger is Recruiting

The Freeway Blogger has declared October 13 to be Freeway Free Speech Day.

On October 13th, hundreds of activists nationwide will post signs critical of the Bush Administration on area freeways, reaching millions of voters in states from Maine to California. The Freeway Blogger has posted more than 2000 such signs over the last year.

In addition to coordinating activists, we will launch a nationwide media campaign to promote the fact that hundreds (if not thousands) of these signs are going up across America on the same day, and to highlight this newest, and oldest, form of civic dialog. We anticipate wide-spread news coverage about this powerful grassroots effort.

...We are asking for your help in posting signs and recruiting activists, especially in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
