Kate, William and the Royal Baby

Here's a video of Kate and William showing their new baby to the crowd gathered in front of the hospital. They are very warm and gracious.

When they left the hospital, Prince William put the baby in a car seat in the back of their personal vehicle and the couple then drove off.

No limousine, no throngs of security agents, and the couple walked right up to the public and chatted. How refreshing.

500 Inmates Break Out of Abu Ghraib

500 inmates, including many members of al Qaida have broken out of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Sunni insurgents, including the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, have been regaining strength in recent months and striking on an almost daily basis against Shi'ite Muslims and security forces amongst other targets.

The violence has raised fears of a return to full-blown conflict in a country where Kurds, Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims have yet to find a stable way of sharing power.

Zimmerman: Good Samaritans and Racial Injustice

The Seminole County Sheriff's office today released a statement confirming that last Wednesday, four days after being acquitted of murder and manslaughter, George Zimmerman helped free a family of four from a rollover accident. [Added: Here are the 911 calls.]

After spotting the vehicle on the side of the road, George grabbed a fire extinguisher from inside his truck, thinking a fire might break out, and with another man, freed the trapped family before first responders arrived at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle identified Zimmerman as the man who pulled him to safety. Officers spoke with Zimmerman who then left the scene. [More...]

Princess Kate Delivers Healthy Baby Boy

Update: It's a boy.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, also known as Princess Kate, has entered a London hospital in the early stages of labor.

This is really big news in England. The media has been camped outside the hospital for days.

Following tradition, after the baby is born, a notice with details will be posted on the easel pictured above.

The formal announcement that a baby has been born will be made in a statement driven by car from the hospital across London and posted on an easel in the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

There will also be a 41-gun salute.[More...]

Sunday Open Thread

The Pentagon has sent out a notice that periodic review boards will be reinstated to evaluate 71 detainees and determine whether any any should be transferred.

46 captives currently held as “indefinite detainees,” a category created by an Obama Task force in 2010 of captives considered too dangerous to release but for whom there was no evidence that could justify a criminal trial;

25 other captives who in 2010 were listed as candidates for trials by military commissions or civilian courts.

The notice also seems to be timed for Wednesday's congressional hearing, "Closing Guantanamo: The National Security, Fiscal, and Human Rights Implications."

46 detainees are now being force-fed.

In other news, judges warn that the sequester may trigger a constitutional crisis.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome, except those related to George Zimmerman. Please use a Zimmerman-related thread for to discuss his case or matters related to race.

Standing Up For the Constitution

The Constitution is not a rough draft. You don't get to edit or erase parts of it to delete rights for an unpopular or hated defendant.

The Bill of Rights was designed to protect the rights of the citizen accused from the awesome powers of the Government. It was not enacted to protect the rights of crime victims.

The presumption of innocence is a bedrock of our criminal justice system that applies to the person charged with a crime, not the victim of a crime.

Self-defense is an affirmative defense that may be raised by a defendant in court in response to a criminal charge. [More...]

ACLU Reverses Course on DOJ Investigation of Zimmerman

There must have been some heated discussions going on behind the scenes at the ACLU for it to do a 180 degree u-turn on whether the Department of Justice should investigate George Zimmerman to determine whether a hate crime prosecution was appropriate. I'm not surprised, just relieved the organization came to its senses.

On July 14, ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero issued a statement on behalf of the organization that was titled, "Honoring the Memory of the Trayvon Martin (Next Steps for Systemic Reforms.) It called on the DOJ to investigate whether George Zimmerman's committed a federal civil rights violation or a hate crime by shooting Trayvon Martin.

R.I.P. Helen Thomas

Journalist Helen Thomas has died at age 92 after a long illness. She was the longest-serving White House journalist and the first female president of the White House Correspondents' Association and Washington's Gridiron Club.

She was a trailblazer, and fearless in her reporting, but as NPR says:

Had she stepped away after the first six decades of her career, she would have been hailed simply as one of the most famous White House reporters in modern times.

Saturday Open Thread

A weekend with no work, I'm contemplating the possibilities. Farmers Market, Pilates, and some non-Zimmerman writing.

If you have any suggestions for crime or politics stories, please let me know.

I also may do none of these and watch for the arrival of Princess Kate's baby. (not really.)

Here's an open thread, all topics welcome besides Zimmerman. When his last threads get full, I'll put up a Zimmerman thread and try to keep out of it.

Hope you have a great weekend planned. Whats best at the farmer's market this time of year?

Obama on Zimmerman: Part II

Update: George Zimmerman's lawyers respond to President Obama's remarks on race today.

TalkLeft just crashed from the number of people viewing the last thread at the same time. We've rebooted the server and closed that thread. You may continue the discussion of President Obama's remarks today on the George Zimmerman verdict and race (transcript here).

What I agree with:

The judge conducted the trial in a professional manner. The prosecution and the defense made their arguments. The juries were properly instructed that in a case such as this reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict. And once the jury has spoken, that's how our system works.

Keep in mind that the trial is over and the evidence is of record. The public's opinion of the evidence is not the topic. Comments that misstate the evidence in the case, or speculate as to their personal theory of guilt that was not disproved to their satisfaction have no place here. [More...]

Obama Addresses George Zimmerman Verdict

Here's the transcript of President Obama's remarks on the George Zimmerman verdict today.

The rest of his remarks, on the topic of race, would be welcome following an incident involving racial profiling by police. In case he hasn't noticed, the practice is rampant in New York City. They do not fit in the context of this case. [More...]

Cop Who Leaked Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Photos Placed on Leave

Sergeant Sean P. Murphy, the State Police tactical photographer who leaked photos of a bloodied Dzhokhar Tsarnaev with a sniper's laser aimed at his head as he surrendered and departed the boat, has been placed on leave. He will have a hearing next week. He was not authorized to release the photos.

The U.S. Attorneys office, former prosecutors, police officials, a law professor and defense lawyers have all blasted Murphy's release of the photos.

“The release of these photos was completely unacceptable,” (U.S. Attorney) spokeswoman Christina DiIorio-Sterling said in a statement. [More...]
