Wednesday Open Thread: Respect for Puerto Rico

Reggaeton music artist Nicky Jam has rescinded his endorsement of Donald Trump as a result of the racist and degrading comments delivered by a comedian who performed at a recent Trump campaign event, particularly those targeting Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans.

Nicky Jam was one of the only Reggaeton artists to support Trump. He got a lot of heat from other musicians about it. He attended a Trump rally in Las Vegas in September, where Trump, having no idea who he was, introduced him as a female telling the audience "She's hot." Today, in rescinding his endorsement in this Instagram video in Spanish he said: (rough translation)

"The reason why I supported Donald Trump was because I thought it was the best thing for the economy in the United States, where many Latinos live ... I thought it was the best move. Never in my life did I think that a month later a comedian was going to come to criticize my country and talk bad about my country and therefore, I renounce any support to Donald Trump and That’s why I’m renouncing my support for Donald Trump and stepping away from any political conversation. Puerto Rico deserves respect.” he said.

Puerto Ricans can't vote in the U.S. Presidential election, but they have a lot of weight with relatives and friends who can vote. Nicky Jam has 43 million followers on Instagram. In 3 hours, the post had more than 85,000 likes.

Also today, Arnold Schwarzenegger broke with Republicans and said he's voting for Kamala Harris. [More...]

The Netflix biographic series about Nicky Jam, Nicky Jam, El Ganador, is really good. My favorite song of his is Hasta La Manacer (video here). It's also the only song of his I can sing along with in Spanish, thanks to this video from the Lyrica app which helps you learn Spanish by singing songs.

I started visiting San Juan on vacations when I was in high school, but always went to San Juan, and hotels in Condado or Miramar. My parents moved from New York to Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico when I started law school. They also lived in Aguadilla. They rented a house on the former Ramey Air Force Base for I think $100 a month, and a beach shack on the famous Rincon surfing beach south of Aguadilla. It's where I spent every law school vacation for three years, each time bringing a different law school friend. I loved those years, and I love Puerto Rico.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

I really liked the dime-bags I'd get some 40 years ago. There was a ritual associated with those baggies that was fun: cleaning the dope. Removing the stems and seeds, leaving the leaves. There were no buds; I think those were reserved for hash. The stuff was a nice buzz, nothing like the gonzo hashish-like dope that is the standard now. I cannot handle that and I don't want to.

How long until we know who won.

The thing is Trump has camped out in NC till Tuesday.  That's because they are worried about NC.

And NC usually reports pretty early.  If Kamala wins NC it's over.  They might not call it but it's over. Early.

Kamala Harris now leads Donald Trump in Iowa -- a startling reversal for Democrats and Republicans who have all but written off the state's presidential contest as a certain Trump victory.

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Vice President Harris leading former President Trump 47% to 44% among likely voters just days before a high-stakes election that appears deadlocked in key battleground states.

The results follow a September Iowa Poll that showed Trump with a 4-point lead over Harris and a June Iowa Poll showing him with an 18-point lead over Democratic President Joe Biden, who was the presumed Democratic nominee at the time.

I told some friends that I expected at least one red state from 2020 to turn blue. Iowa was my top pick. I think Kansas is a possibility as well. There's a lot of talk online about Texas. Cruz is dragging down the GQP vote. They really don't like him. They need to pass that dislike along to their governor.

I think AZ will stay blue as will NV. NC is still a possibility. Robinson is dragging down that GQP vote.

"With just three days until the election, former President Donald Trump's campaign remains unsettled about his prospects in North Carolina, a Sun Belt state that he's claimed in two consecutive presidential elections," NBC News reports.

"When asked why, a Trump campaign official put it bluntly."

Said the official: "If there's one state that could bite you in the ass, it's North Carolina."

When the Harris Campaign Expects Election Results
November 4, 2024 at 4:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 274 Comments

"Near-complete election results are expected from Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan on Tuesday night, but only partial results from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona, Harris-Walz campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon told reporters in a Monday afternoon briefing," the Wall Street Journal reports.

"Dillon predicted additional results from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania will be available earlier in the day Wednesday, with Arizona and Nevada trickling in the rest of the week."

Said Dillon: "We're going to continue to see new votes being reported for many days after Election Day. We believe this race is going to be incredibly close, so we may not know the results of this election for several days."

    but he's right about this

As you know, I have been loathe to predict how I really feel the election is going to turn out on Tuesday. But I'm guessing by now you've picked up a basic sense from me that, contrary to the breathless punditry of how "dangerously close" this election is -- It's a tie! It's a 50-50 country! It's neck-and-neck! It's kneecap-to-kneecap! Trump's gonna win! -- I have felt for a long time that not only is Trump going to lose (because, yes, I have a lot of faith in the goodness of my fellow Americans), but Kamala Harris is going to win, and win big. With crowd-size numbers that even Trump will be blown away by, meaning this is the last that we will see him (unless Dr. Phil does a live special from Epstein Island a few years from now).

Several roads are closed due to flooding. Since right at this moment I prefer not going high, I can't help hoping the roads are in  rural areas that vote heavily for the orange one and prevent or discourage same day voting. Defeating Trump and getting rid of the coward of the Senate would be fantastic.

I physically cannot stand in a line. Not for 5 or 10 minutes much less an hour. And there's no where to sit if you are in a line. I mailed my ballot in over a week ago. County sent me an email acknowledging receipt of said ballot.

I hope they count my sister's backup ballot that we mailed in. She was not able to get her ballot they sent her in Nepal printed and returned.
