Monday Open Thread: Why is He Still Here?

Writing about Donald Trump is like listening to a broken record. Over and over the media exposes his lies and incompetence, his narcisism and delusions of grandeur, the danger he poses to the global stature of he United States and even to our democracy. At least since the start of COVID-19 (which is when I began watching cable news again after an absence of many years), every night on CNN, in broadcasts distributed around the world, not one, but three prime time hosts brand Donald Trump all these things and worse.

Everyone except his marginalized, fanatical base knows he's a charlatan. Everyone knows he lost the popular vote in 2016. Everyone knows he appoints unqualified people to key staff positions and his administration has the higest turnover rate of any recent occupant of the oval office. Everyone belittles his aides, his nepotism, his adult children, and his apathy to anything that doesn't line his own coffers or ego. Everyone knows he doesn't care about America.

Yet, every morning we wake up and he's still here. He's still dominating the news. He's still lying about COVID-19. Why isn't he gone?

It will take a generation or more to recover from the damage Donald Trump has inflicted on America at every level -- from our physical and economic health to our educational system, our personal and professional lives, the social fabric of our nation and our standing in the world. If we recover at all.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Exactly?

Exorcising them?  I don't disagree with you.  Just like to hear out loud how we plan to do that.  Exactly.

I recently left a long comment on this subject.   The fact that Trump is not and has never really been the primary problem.  The problem is the Republican base.

To answer the question in the post, he is not just "still here".  According to 538 he still has the support, in many cases fanatical support, of 41+% of the voting public.

I really would like to know how we exorcise 41+% of the voting public.  Cause I don't know how that is achieved.

I would just point out in passing Hitler had the support of roughly 40% when he took power.

We have one option.  One.  They have to be beaten.  Not narrowly.  They have to be crushed and humiliated. They have to be banished to minority status and kept there by never letting anyone forget what they enabled.

I also don't agree they they don't really support him but only hate the same people.  That might have been true early on.  Not anymore IMO.  They support him.  Blindly and rabidly.  He has become their dreams of a white nation made flesh.
In fact many don't just support him, they have literally come to worship him.  Trumpism is not and maybe never was really a political movement.  It's a religion.

comparison I have found is denazification that went on after WW2 where people were exposed to what really happened. I mean even after that there were still Nazis but a lot fewer of them. Perhaps doing something about talk radio and Fox News where these people get their crap from. Maybe fining Fox for every lie they tell and talk radio too. Or make them run constant disclaimers that they are not news organizations.

    Parent
... in Germany included the public repudiation of that country's Nazi leaders through criminal trials and subsequent convictions, imprisonment and in quite a few cases, execution by hanging or firing squad. For the civilian population, the public display of Nazi symbols, flags and other paraphernalia was banned outright, and violators were punished swiftly and severely

And in those countries and territories that were recently liberated of Nazi German occupation, the reprisals against real or suspected collaborators were often swift and brutal. Even France's great First World War hero, Marshal Henri Philippe Pétain, was convicted of treason and spent the rest of his life in prison for collaborating with German occupiers as head of the Nazi puppet state Vichy France, while his trusted deputy Pierre Laval, who served as Vichy France's prime minister and facilitated the transfer of French Jews to Nazi death camps,, wound up facing the business end of a firing squad.

De-Nazification of Germany and western Europe took several decades and was achieved through public education, generous postwar aid packages and in equal measure, military intimidation and legal reprisal. But even today, the nationalist right remains a potent force in European affairs. The relatively recent tragedy of post-Tito Yugoslavia provides a cautionary tale of just how easily local public opinion can be swayed by blatant nationalist appeals to our darker fears and instincts.

Our own country was clearly founded at least in part upon the grievously misguided principle of White male supremacy. As a result, white nationalism has so readily (and wrongly) been conflated with American patriotism in our historical recounting for so long, it's really no small wonder that nearly 160 years after the U.S. Civil War first began at Charleston, SC's Fort Sumter, we're apparently still litigating the final terms of that war's conclusion.

To succeed in the fight against white nationalism and fascism, we need to first reclaim and then assert control over our country's historical narrative. A good place to start would be the resurrection of the Fairness Doctrine for our public media, and the return to the art of corporate trust-busting in order to break up media conglomerates, which can hopefully unwind the present near-domination of public airwaves by ultra-conservative and reactionary thought-speak.

Then everyone can speculate as to whether a sealed Indictment will be returned against him in November like they did with Karl Rove. Rove was never indicted but his political worth sank to the ground. He's reduced to being a Fox elections commentator. People won't vote for Trump if they think he's involved in covering up  a big crime or using the power of his office to intervene.

That way, if Joe Biden pulls ahead in the days (or weeks) after voting ends -- if we experience a `blue shift' like the one in 2018, in which the Democratic majority in the House grew as votes came in -- the president will have given himself grounds to reject the outcome as `fake news.'"

"The only way to prevent this scenario, or at least, rob it of the oxygen it needs to burn, is to deliver an election night lead to Biden. This means voting in person. No, not everyone will be able to do that. But if you plan to vote against Trump and can take appropriate precautions, then some kind of hand delivery -- going to the polls or bringing your mail-in ballot to a "drop box" -- will be the best way to protect your vote from the president's concerted attempt to undermine the election for his benefit."

"It is worth noting that the Hotel du Pont was where he announced his 1972 Senate candidacy. It is also where he has made major political appearances in the decades since -- including, in March, the last in-person event he held before the coronavirus shuttered the campaign trail for months."

of US citizens or legal residents to the USA. Under a new draft regulation, which relies on legal authorities of the CDC, the federal government may block a citizen or legal resident from crossing the border or returning  to the US from abroad if an official "reasonably believes that the individual either may have been exposed to, or is in infected with, the communicable disease."

According to reporting in the NYTimes, the ban on US citizens and foreigners who have already established legal residence is being proposed citing the risks of the spreading the coronavirus if the authorities have reason to believe the person may be infected. The draft does not state how long a citizen or legal resident would be required to remain outside of the US.

The Homeland Security spokesperson declined to comment and the CDC spokesperson said they would seek to gather more information about the proposal.

A top immigration lawyer for The ACLU said quarantining citizens or lawful permanent residents for appropriate durations  is not per se unconstitutional, but any attempt to bar them for extended periods beyond that necessary for public health raises profound constitutional issues and will trigger a legal challenge.

So, the plan is being re-considered so as to skip the mandatory state participation, other than the usual state unemployment eligibility benefit.  The new federal unemployment benefit will be $300, reduced from the $600/week that expired. July 31.  The federal benefit is to come from FEMA funds intended for emergencies such as hurricane disaster relief.  This money is estimated to provide for about five weeks of federal unemployment benefits before it runs out.

Trump would, no doubt, have a place for Harry Anslinger (1892-1975) in his administration, if he  were still available.  The former railroad cop and long-time head of the then Federal Bureau of Narcotics was the founding father of the war on drugs.  He served in the government from 1918 to 1963, encompassing the Dragnet period.

While flying under the historical radar more so than J. Edgar Hoover, Anslinger was no less a bureaucratic force for evil (although, he is often recognized for his expertise in narcotic drug control).

After the obsolescence of prohibition, a new area was needed to secure funding.  Along came cannabis.

Harry organized a hysterical propaganda program, writing in 1937, for example, "Here indeed is the unknown quantity among narcotics... no one knows  when he places a marijuana cigarette to his lips, whether he will become a philosopher, a joyous traveler in a musical heaven, a mad insensate, ..or a murderer."

And, "Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death."

The NYTimes gave notice yesterday, in the Arts Section, of an exhibit, at the FDN museam in Arlington, VA. of the work of Anslinger. Of particular interest to Trump would be his racist bent, even for the times.  This often neglected part of Anslinger's past, appears to have been a part of his zeal.

Paul Howard loses run off in Atlanta (none / 0) (#59)
by McBain on Wed Aug 12, 2020 at 03:22:51 PM EST
to Fani Willis.  Howard is the DA who brought charges against the two officers involved in the Rayshard Brooks shooting death.
Sounds like he did some good things in his career...
Howard will step down with a mixed record. While his handling of the trial of NFL player Ray Lewis and two others charged with murder after a Super Bowl party in 2000 was deemed a failure (Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction; the other men were acquitted), his successes were many.
His controversial decision to prosecute teachers and administrators in the Atlanta Public School cheating scandal ended with 11 defendants convicted on racketeering and other charges. Howard has also proudly promoted his Project Level Up program, aimed at curbing recidivism, and his Conviction Integrity Unit. As part of that effort, his office took another look at the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981. It also freed an inmate serving a life sentence on a drug offense.

but the Brooks case charges were criticized by many...

Howard's critics decried the decision as hasty, saying it leap-frogged a state investigation and appeared aimed at scoring political points amid a heated re-election campaign. The Georgia Sheriffs' Association called the charges a "grandstanding vote-seeking tactic." Howard denied the accusations, lauding his record of charging dozens of police officers since taking office in 1997.

Hopefully, Willis will take another look a the case.

There is also an ongoing criminal investigation for cushioning his own pay with $195,000 of a $250,000 grant.

Forget The Post Office. Trump Just Went To War With Veterans And The Military.

In the noon Pacific hour, 3 PM Eastern, Brian Williams of MSNBC had retired US army general Russell Honore, the Hero of Katrina on to discuss Trump's tinkering with the post office to try to alter the validity of mail in ballots. Honore was coldly outraged. He spoke about how he, as a veteran, relied on timely postal delivery for necessary medications to his door. Honore noted that only today, facing a delayed shipment of medications, he had been forced to make alternate arrangements and drive to a Walgreen's to get his prescription. He angrily decried the similar situation for his brothers and sisters who wore the cloth of this country, but didn't have the option of going to a drug store for a refill.

    And apparently Honore isn't the only veteran who is mightily pissed. Veterans share a nostalgic bond with the post office, they are the ones who made sure that letters and cookies from home got through, and made sure that their absentee ballots were delivered in time to fill out and return.  And the others who are equally pissed off are the ones who have the money to put where their collective mouth is. Earlier today, votevets.org released a blistering condemnation of Trump's antics;

There are always lines at my polling place and I cannot stand for more than a few minutes. I am thinking about renting a wheelchair for election day just so I can vote in person. Mask wearing compliance here is 50/50, so I'll have to chance my health to vote.

The local grocery chain won't enforce compliance. It upsets my wife so much that I went so far as to file a compliant with the state health dept (shout out to Dr. Levine). I got a reply from the Agriculture Dept. This is a grocery store that is within 5 miles of the Governor's home. I pointed that out in my complaint. Wife says compliance is still iffy and there is no one at the door to enforce compliance. She has starting going to a different store, same chain, but they have someone at the door to enforce mask compliance.

The NYT quote in the post above minimizes what was done. "Altered an email". Was that change of line spacing, capitalization, added bold or underline, NO. It was an alteration to make Page's Russia contacts appear sinister where the CIA was in the know and approved.

I have Hulu, HBO and Netflix so I have numerous movie and series options. I plan to get my news online rather than watch it on the TV. I also have loaded multiple ebooks (offered by library) available to read.
