During a Thursday appearance on Fox & Friends, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) brought up Benghazi while defending President Trump over the recent bombshell report detailing Russian payments to the Taliban in exchange for their attacks on NATO troops.
Those golf trips always work their magic on Lindsey.

Gabriel Sherman: "Nervous Republicans worried about losing the Senate are now debating when to break from Trump. Trump campaign internal polls show Trump's level of `strong support' dropping from 21 to 17 points since last week, a person briefed on the numbers said. A source close to Iowa Republican Joni Ernst's campaign said Ernst advisers are upset that a solid seat is now in play."

Said one source: "Joni's campaign is pissed. They should not be in a competitive race."

"A Republican strategist close to Mitch McConnell told me that Republicans have Labor Day penciled in as the deadline for Trump to have turned things around. After that, he's on his own."

I've been saying he acts like a person who doesn't expect to win or even care about winning.  That would be very out of character.  Not being concerned about winning because of what Barr or Rudy tells him seems absolutely possible and perfectly in character.

"He needs to articulate why he wants a second term," said another. Some have expressed hope that Trump would find a way to become less polarizing, as if polarization were not the raison d'être of his presidency."

"It's hard to know if Republicans like this are truly naïve or if they're just pretending so they don't have to admit what a foul enterprise they're part of. Because Trump does indeed have a re-election message, a stark and obvious one. It is `white power.'"

John Bolton: The Room Where it Happened (5.00 / 1) (#75)
by RickyJim on Sat Jul 04, 2020 at 08:02:44 PM EST
I finished listening to this book today.  It took a little under 21 hours to get through the audio book.  Readers looking for more impeachable offenses by Trump will be disappointed.  During trade negotiations, asking China and Japan to buy more US agricultural products and telling them it would help him win in 2020, sounds benign compared to other stuff we know he has done. Bolton himself read the epilog where he speculated that Trump might adopt the Democratic agenda if he won a second term.

If there was anything consistent in Trump's foreign policy shoutings to his aids, it is what does country X do in return for all the money we spend there especially in regards to Afghanistan, South Korea and NATO (never the biggest beneficiary of US aid, Israel).  Another of his favorite ploys is to offer a meeting with an adversary like the Taliban, North Korea or Iran.  The book is mostly a very repetitious account of many instances of Trump threatening to cut off aid or have a meeting and how the good guys like Bolton, Pompeo, Kelley managed to scuttle Trump's intention.

One thing I hoped to get out of the book was an explanation of US policies.  I have the same questions that Trump has.  For example, General Dunford explained to Trump that we should keep troops in Afghanistan to prevent the Taliban from taking over Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and then using it to kill us American infidels.  Bolton doesn't, in this volume, really try to justify his world view which is much more hawkish than Trump's.

On thing that Bolton never mentions are the worldwide humanitarian crises coming from people trying to immigrate. I sure he would never suggest diverting funds from Europe and Asia to Central America but IMHO that would be in the US national security interest.  He says next to nothing about the plight of the Palestinians.  He mentions a few times that he conversed with Kushner about the middle east plan he was working on but says nothing about it.  So if I were putting a review on Amazon, I'd give the book no more than 2 stars since I didn't learn that much.

... doesn't talk much about international humanitarian crises is because he's long been a staunch proponent of military interventionist policies that have all too often been the root cause of humanitarian disasters, such as the Iraq War and Saudi Arabia's military assault on Yemen.

And since he obviously doesn't care all that much about the fate of noncombatants caught in the crossfire, collateral damage and humanitarian consequences such as refugees, epidemics and famines don't really interest him except when the public relations goes awry and backfires, as it did in the assassination of Iranian Gen. a long drawn-out, hellacious, thunderstorm. We haven't had one of those around here in a couple of years.

I could definately use a little break from this heatwave. My daughter who used to live in Vegas where it hits 110, said it's more uncomfortable here in Western NY in the summer than it was there.

95 with 85% humidity, which is what's it's been and will be for the next couple of weeks, is wayyyyyyy worse that 115 in the desert.

Shade if you can find it is comfortable in the desert.  Shade don't do squat here.

Right now at 9:30 is 88 with a feels like of 100

It will be feels like of 110 or even higher this afternoon.

My yard guy, young healthy, literally had a mini heat stroke yesterday.  Had to come in the air conditioning for a while.  I was ready to call 911 but he said, nah, it happens all the time.

Also we are getting thunderstorms almost every day and it just makes it more humid.

I spent a couple of summers in southern Louisiana back in the day and for me it was the closest thing to hell on earth, weatherwise.

There weren't any ole swimmin holes around either. More like the ole swimmin swamp.

I live on Spring River.  So named because it literally comes up out of the ground a few miles north of here in a town appropriately named Mammoth Spring.  My former address until 3 years ago when I moved here.

There are many lakes and even other rivers that are the temperature of bath water by now but Spring river is born at 58 degrees and just gets warm enough to be perfect here.  So yeah.  I kayak on Spring River all the time.

About the local weather summer here was always hot an humid.  But when I was a kid there was always a late summer drought.  Always.  Which while not usually a good thing at least helped with the humidity.

No more.  Every summer since I arrived in 2011 has been wetter.  It rains every afternoon.  Literally.  Like a rain forest.
My yard guy was working in the heat because it was the first day dry enough in weeks.

Drought in summer, snow in winter when I was a kid.  Always.
It has snowed a tiny bit once since 2011.

is only comfortable if it cools things off a little, not if it turns ones surroundings into a steambath.

That Spring River sounds awesome though. Especially right now.

It's dense humidity and mid-90s w no sign of abating, this is about 10-12 degrees above normal for this time of year.

I played exactly one hour of tennis yesterday on hard courts with not a spot of shade, and was whipped, even though it was only 9:30 in the morning.

Sat in my car w AC blasting in my face lol....

had more than a mini heatstroke 30  on the 4th of July back in my construction days. For some reason we had to finish drying in a roof, supposedly it was only a couple of hours. It ended up taking over four hours and in our rush we neglected to take breaks, my head was spinning by the time I got down. I managed to get in my car and drive about one half a mile before I had to pull over in front of a Winn-Dixie and get out and lay on the shaded sidewalk for about half an hour. Nobody called 911 and eventually I was able to drive home and crank up the AC, but I didn't completely recover for days.

With tennis. When younger and stupider re hydration I played a tournament singles, dubs, Mxd, played like 5 matches in an oppressive afternoon, and belatedly realized towards the end that I had stopped sweating completely.
As w you, took a couple days to recover.

I did get smarter and by my 30s I could play in just about anything. 107F in the shade in NJ in August on hard courts. But I had to be very meticulous about getting electrolytes and drinking fluids to the gills the night before matches on days like that. Try to pee absolutely clear lol. I'm in awe of the athletes on the pro tennis tour. They're unbelievable in their prep.

I argued against her many times. Before Fox she was a deputy DA in San Francisco. The case that brought her to the attention of media was the infamous dog mauling case.

[Then SF D.A. Terrance] Hallinan staffed his legal team with lead prosecutor James Hammer and Kimberly Guilfoyle, a young assistant district attorney who was often defined by her appearance in the local press. A Feb. 9, 2001, Matier and Ross column in the Chronicle described her as "the legal eyeful" and a "former lingerie model." The columnists went on to dish on Guilfoyle's TV offers, and speculated if " her beau," then-Supervisor Gavin Newsom, "will get offered a co-starring role."

She then married Gavin Newsom. Three years later they got divorced.

The only reason why Kanye is doing this is to get black voters to vote for him for shits and giggles, in hopes of swaying the black vote away from Biden - eventually trying to split the democrat vote so Trump can win

I just saw Susan Rice on MTP.  She wants the VP.  And Biden could do way worse.

Earlier I was thinking she might have to much "Obama baggage" but it's looking like a little Obama baggage might not be a bad thing.

If the idea is to remind people what normalcy looked like in 2015 she would be a good vehicle for that.

And I can't think of anyone I think would be more prepared for the job of president if that's needed.

KW Miller, who's running for Congress, tweeted (for some reason) that Beyonce isn't black and is a globalist, Soros-funded Deep State operative who worships in Satanic churches. And those are her good points.

Based on that, I give the guy a better than even chance of getting elected, especially if he's a self-proclaimed Christian and a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment.
