TrumpVirus Update: Florida reached 9,000 new cases today, up from its 5,000 record a few days ago. It has ordered bars to close. Too little, too late, of course, just like Texas.

Unlike Birx who is thanking millenials for getting tested, I have no nice words for them. Faucio agrees they are the culprit, but is too nice to criticize them.

Will the 65 + age group ever be able to safely leave their homes, return to work, go to dinner in outdoor parking lot or hug their grandkids? Looks more and more like the answer is "No". Forever shut-ins. Remember when Trump said, open the schools, let all the teachers, except those over 70, return? That will probably be the new normal for all jobs and professions. Your accountant (plumber, electrician, lawyer, shop owner, chef, etc) is too old to safely be in public? Just hire or patronize a younger one.

In the meantime, MASK UP AMERICA and stay home if you can.

says a national mask mandate could slash infections and help the economcy.

Goldman's chief economist has studied the link between face masks and Covid-19 health and economic outcomes and translated those results into GDP impact. It was found that a mask mandate could substitute for lockdowns that would subtract nearly 5% from growth.

Maybe this will get Republican's attention, not the part about public health, but the money part.

It's strange. He's not inspiring. He is coming across as lucid. But the odd thing I realized is that just watching it was kind of......soothing.

Promising to do all the things we would normally expect a president to do. Talking about letting the science decide. Just soothing.

I think the burnout is so massive and the gas lighting has been so routine that frankly Biden represents a break from all of that. Also nobody expects Biden to be some sort of savior. It seems the last 20 years have been about savior politics and I for one will be glad to see it end.

Campaign staff, Secret Service members, WH Economist and a reporter covering the rally all tested positive for COVID-19. Secret Service members, campaign staff members,as well as Trump's campaign manager are under quarantine. Trump wanted a rally to help him get over the "sads," others paid the price.

All of the staffers who attended the rally are quarantining this week after interacting with several colleagues who later tested positive for the coronavirus, CNN reported. Among those self-isolating is campaign manager Brad Parscale, campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh confirmed to the Daily Beast .

until immunity from a vaccine that works to prevent infection safely for a specific period of time. Moreover, that vaccine needs to be produced and delivered to everyone quickly.

Some early studies present worry that recovered or asymptomatic patients develop weak antibodies that may be effective for only a few months, leaving carriers vulnerable to repeat infections.

If these studies bear out, hopes of "herd immunity" as a way of dealing with the virus will be dashed. Besides, herd immunity will require a large percentage (50 to 60 percent) of the population to have been infected. And, if the death rate is one percent (probably greater), that leaves a lot of fatalities in a country of 328 million.

Perhaps a more hopeful possibility is for a pharmacological remedy that could, at least, make the infection less lethal/toxic and more manageable.

If you take a step back, this place we find ourselves in the middle of the worst public health emergency in a generation with almost literally every public official begging people to wear a mask and the president saying NOT WEARING ONE is a sign of your support for him and wearing one is showing opposition to him, simply does not seem sustainable.

Some kind of intervention seem certain.

But he won't do it. To do it would be to lose. He won't do it. No matter what they say or how much they beg.

It would be headline news all over the world if he did this one simple thing so necessary for this country to ever get back to a kind of normal. And he will not. For that very reason.

President Trump's campaign has scrapped plans to hold a rally in Alabama next weekend amid concerns about coronavirus infections rising, CNN reports.
"Trump was slated to travel to the state ahead of the Senate race between his former attorney general Jeff Sessions and the former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, but plans were called off as state officials voiced concerns about a mass gathering and campaign officials ultimately decided against it."

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) told MSNBC there needs to be a "consistent national message" from President Trump on wearing face masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
Said Hutchinson: "A consistent national message supporting the importance of wearing a mask and social distancing is very important to making sure everybody understands the importance of it. Nothing beats leadership. Certainly it's important to convey the importance of that."

I was a little pleased. He was very clear. And it was clear who he was talking to.

The thing is I think this is symptom of Trumps softening support in my state. Sounds like he is hearing from Arkansans the same thing I'm hearing.which is basically WTF? This is nuts.

It must be maddening for a guy like Hutchinson. He seems a pretty no BS right of center with libertarian tendencies.
Something I myself have sometimes against my better judgement.
But the central tenet of libertarian republicanism is personal responsibility. So they say. So they, reasonably I think, expect if people are given good information they will do what's right.
And I am actually surprised how many of my neighbors have done that. But then there is Trump. Telling people not to wear masks. It is Hutchinson's worst nightmare. Trump is forcing him to make rules when if he would just shut up people would do it like every place else on earth.
They are considering rules here.

There's not much of an age difference in terms of who is wearing masks and who isn't.

The people who "always" wear a mask does go up slightly by age but the number of people who don't wear masks is roughly the same in every age group. All things considered, there doesn't seem to be any significant correlation between age and mask wearing.
