The Choices According to Donald Trump

In a two-punch whammy this week, Donald Trump brought back the death penalty and then, by packing the Supreme Court with conservative judges, got approval to use billions of dollars awarded to the military for his useless border wall, even though Congress had refused to authorize the expenditure.

Donald Trump's message to the American people: "You can eat dirt, or you can eat sh!t."

This should be the final nail in Trump's political coffin, but the Democrats seem in disarray. Until some of the 20 or so Democrats who think they should be President realize they are too old, or don't have a chance or are in it only to bring attention to one or two of their pet issues, it will likely be another lost opportunity.

(Hat tip on the quote to Teresa Mendoza in the antepenultimate epidsode of the fictional La Reina del Sur 2, referring to a most corrupt DEA agent who will kill anyone who gets in the way of the DEA's plan to choose the next President of Mexico. The Finale is Monday night.)

It's going to be like those theatrical serials from the 50s.  There will be new installments every week. A week ago it was the Squad.     Each week more headline grabbing than the last.

I actually think it's going to get tiresome pretty quickly.

Marginally sane republicans do not like this.

We are entering "the end times".

    And about f'ing time.

For all it's problems, it has a great city life. Great food to be found in Baltimore. I love the public markets, Lexington, Broadway, Cross Street. I root for the Ravens every year. It has interesting neighborhoods. And history. And I live only 50 miles away.

G&M does make a good cake (and right down the street from my cousin) but nothing compares to the ones my Mom makes!

this is going to be the strategy for the next year. It also looks like an impeachment inquiry is going to start after the recess. So we'll be having either the inquiry or an impeachment vote in an election year. If it lasts long enough it may be question asked of every senate candidate if they would vote to remove Trump. That question is going to make about 6 to 10 of them squirm awfully hard.

Normally, I don't agree with the "too old" criticism for candidates but I'm starting to come around.  In addition to being young (50ish) and having a dynamic presence, I think the ideal Democrat candidate will be tall and fit.  Trump is tall but he's also the fattest president I can remember. Put someone on stage next to him who looks good and sounds confident and they'll have a chance.

by KeysDan on Sun Jul 28, 2019 at 02:49:03 PM EST
Director of National Security, is to resign (get the boot) next week. Coats has been considered an effective and concerned national security officer, but he has been a great disappointment to Trump for not being his Roy Cohn on Russian interference in the 2016 election to help him and harm Clinton, and for his warnings about the present and continuing danger to our democracy posed by Vlad Putin.

Trump is looking to John Ratcliff (R.TX), among the most radical members of Congress, to pick up the slack.  Ratcliff must have passed last week's audition at the Mueller hearing with flying colors.  That part about Mueller being out-of-bounds by not exonerating Trump for being a temporarily unindictable felon must have clinched the deal.

There may well be a favorable impact going forward---the NSA can eliminate the Russia desk.  If the nation needs to know anything about what Russia is up to, the intelligence community can just do what Trump does.  Ask Putin and rely on his answer.

Ratcliffe at the helm of our national intelligence, have unfettered control for political and personal benefit. This, with Trump not yet publicly cleared from the FBI investigation into Trump as Russian agent/asset, is a critical national security matter.

They seem to think there is a faint hope the usual suspects, Collins, Gardener et al may not allow it.

Here's the catch it seems.  He has said until Rathole has been confirmed there will be an "acting" as yet unnamed.  This is a clear break with protocol.  There is a person serving who should be acting until the new one is confirmed.

I expect he will name Kanye West.   Just to, you know, move things alone.

(Sigh!) The 'Democrats in Disarray' meme ... (none / 0) (#23)
by Donald from Hawaii on Sun Jul 28, 2019 at 05:10:22 PM EST
Jeralyn "This should be the final nail in Trump's political coffin, but the Democrats seem in disarray."

... was repeatedly trotted out for display by the media throughout the 2018 midterms. Nevertheless, Democrats gained 41 congressional seats to retake control of the U.S. House; relieved Republicans of seven state governorships and four state attorneys general posts; and further took control of the Colorado State Senate, the New York State Senate, the Maine State Senate, the Minnesota State House, the Connecticut State Senate and both chambers of New Hampshire's legislature.

And finally, thanks to the "disarray" of Democrats in Nevada, that state's legislature is the very first such body in U.S. history with a female-majority membership.

Let's face it, with results like these, I think we would all do quite well to conduct ourselves with a similar "disarray." But in the meantime, let's please stop trafficking in lazy journalism and misleading political tropes.

    Mahalo.

    the disarray refers to (5.00 / 1) (#27)
by Jeralyn on Mon Jul 29, 2019 at 01:05:24 AM EST
the split between Dems that want to go for impeachment and those that want to focus on policy issues and gaining votes for 2020. There has been disarray in how Pelosi has gone one way (no focus on impeachment) while others have either favored impeachment or believed Dems can talk and chew gum at the same time. Democrat opinion writers have been similarly divided.
