Can Donald Trump Find Venezuela on a Map?

Donald Trump owns no hotels in Venezuela. Could he even find it on a map? And why is Melania Trump speaking at this event in Miami when the podium says "The President"? Was it a fundraiser? (I honestly don't know since I refuse to listen to either one of them.) Why am I writing about this? Because of the comments on You Tube. They are as cruel (and in some cases as apt)as any I can remember since the November, 2016 election results. Some are pretty funny (others are admittedly sexist and xenophobic).

One thing appears certain: A year and a half after the 2016 election, Donald Trump remains the most mocked and vilified person ever to have a desk in the oval office. His wife is now running second, perhaps contending only with Ivanka, Don, Jr. and Jared for that unglorified spot. [More...]

Ivanka, she who was born with a golden spoon in her mouth, is now going to spend some more money leading a task force for working people, a subject she'd know nothing about if it leapt up and bit her on the as*.

In a memorandum, [Donald] Trump said the initiative will build on his administration's "growing portfolio" of women's economic empowerment programs, including the "Ivanka Fund" – a World Bank project that she created to award grants to development banks to support women entrepreneurs around the world – and other efforts at USAID and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).

What a horrid way to start a new week, reading about Donald Trump and his nepotism. This is why I rarely read the news anymore unless it's about some other country or ISIS or the Sinaloa Cartel, and certainly not before bed or just waking up.

Please let the media stop putting the Trumps and their photos and videos on the front page. It's like a constant airing of America's dirty laundry. Yes, it stinks that a minority of underinformed voters in a few states put Trump over the top, against the will of the majority of voters who chose the other candidate. But two years of their constant domination of the media is enough of a penalty for those of us who have a brain and used it when we voted. And no one voted for his wife or children. Enough already. There are far more important things going on in the world than what any member of the Trump clan thinks or has to say on any topic.

... is funnier.  People who think that opposing the murder of homesexua1s is something that deserves praise, or people who believe that the man who said he was an "ally" and "real friend" of the LGBT community (then promptly banned them from serving in the military) has even the slightest credibility.

I don't think of him so much as a nazi president as an Orc president..

I've heard their orientation is very malleable.

It's entirely believable that he could not.

I was going to say someone should ambush him with a globe and make him prove it, but I'm not sure I want to know that.

one and a half years (almost two and a half) and more than the nation can bear.  I fear Trump would start to answer where on a map is Venezuela with---what is a map?   AP is reporting that Trump is busy workshopping pejorative nicknames for Democratic rivals. He believes, apparently, that Pocahontas, little Marco, etc  equate with policy for his base.

Nepotism is a thread running throughout Trumplandia--Mitch's wife, the Ivankas, and, the family of the warmed-over AG, William Barr....the son-in-law who is an advisor to Trump on legal issues and his daughter who is moving from DOJ to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of Treasury.

In declining to review a sorta MeToo case Clarence Thomas calls for reconsidering libel standards.  Since 1964 NY Times v Sullivan has been the canonical case.

Back in the day I was taught Euclid v Ambler was the canonical taking case.  It is a far cry from the standards used today in taking.  Kelo is the latest example of how far the long arm of government taking has gone.

The way, and speed, in which we get blasted with nasty comments is much different today than it was in 1964 when the SC ruled on Sullivan.

Part of the problem is that nasty comments on youtube are viewed by many folks as default anonamous.  Lots has been written about how much nastier internet interactions are than face to face interactions.

My history is in land use law and watching the massive change over time from Euclid to Kelo (Kelo happened after I retired) sorta alarmed me.  Wondering if others with legal training have opinions about changes in other areas of law in general; and in libel law in particular.

I agree they are far nastier today (none / 0) (#6)

and people seem quicker to expose to their bigotry  when they are using a chosen alias rather than their real name. However, unless they are writing at a public library, it's very likely their IP address can be obtained, so in the end, they probably aren't fooling anyone.

or even better VPN software can make looking for the IP address hard, or even impossible.

But what I was getting at was not so much how you catch the perp; often times they are more than happy to make nasty comments in public.

As Thomas indicated libel laws have not changed since Sullivan.  I wonder of other justices will take note of his idea that current libel laws need to be changed like multiple other laws have 'evolved'.

the opposite. Not that First Amendment law needs to keep up with the times, and particularly with the challenges of the digital age, but rather that First Amendment law should be rolled back to the "original understanding" of 1791. Which by the way would mean that editors and publishers (not to mention reporters) would be free only from prior restraints of publication, but could be arrested after the fact for "seditious libel," that is, for criticizing the government. And that libel law would not be restricted at all by free speech considerations. No joke.

misrepresent Thomas's position.  I agree with your take; but understand how you got the wrong impression from what I was trying to make.

My understanding is that in the UK libel laws allow suits that are not possible in the US.

On the other hand I have seen some historical comments about how some of the Founding Fathers and opponents of Lincoln described peeps in terms that Jerlyn would not allow on this site.

I am sure this just filed high profile suit will get plenty of zeros and ones wasted on the internet.
