Hurricane Florence is set to hit South Carolina. More than a million people have been evacuated from coastal areas -- Even Walmart has closed its doors.

Lane reversal has begun on the highways, and will last until 6 hours before Florence is set to touch down.

    hurricane Irma was the strength of this poured cement  house with cement roof tiles.  Even though I can see the Atlantic Ocean there is a huge bay like canal in front of me, then a strip of land with houses, and the highway, then the ocean.  The one problem that can happen with houses like mine is the soffits blowing out, letting rainwater in, and flooding the house.  Thankfully that didn't happen here.  Hopefully Florence will slow down before it lands.  Best of luck to your brother Ga6, and I hope he has a generator.

    My brother lives in a condo complex. I'm sure he doesn't have a generator but I would guess someone there does.

    front. in a condo but not on the 1st floor. He says during Hugo he waited until the last moment to leave and got out fine. So I guess he might leave should things look really dire. His ex-father-in-law sat in the house during Hugo and said never again. He was afraid to leave because he thought someone might take his stuff.

    Florence turning southwest as it nears the coast. Myrtle Beach might get a direct hit. I hope your brother decides to evacuate.

    the governor has gasoline and diesel fuel available along the evacuation routes.  Florida's sad sack of a governor finally ordered almost the entire state to evacuate for hurricane Irma with no fuel plans in place.  Entire family's were stuck along the highways the next day in very hot muggy weather.  And then after it was all over many were blocked from going home for two weeks for a variety of ridiculous reasons.  Hopefully the states affected by hurricane Florence have learned from our states mistakes.

    afternoon he was hunkering down in his condo. I guess since it is now a Cat 2 he will be fine. He stayed there during the last hurricane that was a Cat 2. However the problem for him is going to be power. I'm sure he'll be without it for quite a while.

    Hurricane Florence will be "tremendously big and tremendously wet"!!

    My family in Charleston were planning to leave but now that it is looking like Florence is headed for NC, they've decided to stay put.

    zones run in SC. But, I do know that Charleston County and all of the coastal counties running north from there to the NC border are under mandatory evacuation orders.

    There are plenty of sea islands that are part of Charleston County but they do nothing to help the flooding problem in the city of Charleston.

    with a heavy rain. It has water on three sides. The worst of this storm looks to be well north of Charleston as of now with a NC landfall. Charleston has paid it's dues in the past. Better it goes elsewhere.

    sea islands but they don't do anything to shield the city in a hurricane. The outer banks in NC usually take the brunt of a hurricane in NC.

    have 100 miles of a nearly unbroken barrier island protecting the lagoon, only two small inlets at Sebastian and Ft Pierce with the major inlet to the sea 70 miles to our South, nonetheless Irma raised the water level 2-3 feet.

    During hurricane Erin (Cat 1) which made a direct hit just South of Sebastian it managed to collapse part of HWY 1 directly across from it.

    Those islands provide no protection from flash flooding. A foot of rain in one hour is less than the record. Flow will be dumping water for far longer.
