James Corden for Mayor of the World

James Corden for Mayor of the World.

During one of the worst and most shameful weeks in recent American history, evoking nothing but disgust for the vulgarian in the oval office and his wife who is either beyond tone deaf or truly doesn't give a sh*t (as evident from the jacket she wore to board a plane taking her to the border for her photo op and unsuccessful attempt at damage control), James Corden got to escape to London, where he put on joyful shows all week.

The highlight of the week was Thursday night and the carpool karaoke with Paul McCartney. It began traditionally, and then broke the mold. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but it was an absolute joy to watch. [More...]

Although it's tempting to think we know everything there is to know about the Beatles, the memories that McCartney shared during the episode, the places he went back to visit, his easy mingling with the public, and the throngs of ordinary Brits whose faces lit up like Xmas trees and smiles went ear to ear at the surprise of a chance encounter with him were truly special.

Afterwards, when thinking about the planning and coordination that had to have gone into producing the segment, especially in Paul's childhood home and the neighborhood pub where on an ordinary afternoon unsuspecting patrons punched a song into the jukebox and a curtain opened and Paul McCartney and his band started playing the songs live, I couldn't help but remember my first posts about Corden: It's the joy he brings us that is so, so special.

    James Corden/ Paul McCartney (5.00 / 13) (#1)

I have enjoyed readingTalkLeft for years for the smart commentary but this morning I actually had to create an account just to say thank you for this post. For the past year, like millions of people, I wake up and check the news and then wrestle with my anger, frustration and heartbreak as I start my day. This week has been particularly brutal. So to wake up today to a call to joy and the glorious Paul McCartney and James Corden was a gift. I have  20 year old daughter who is trying so hard to make a difference and stay positive. She has also been a Beatles/Paul fan since pre-school. I am going to go wake her up early, hand her some coffee and rewatch this segment with her.
    Thanks again.
    Peace

Thank you for posting it, Jeralyn. Did you notice how Paul McCartney got younger when he was playing in the pub?

I actually got tears watching and trying to think positive...

    Wow. I just had my McCartney songbook (5.00 / 2) (#7)
by Towanda on Fri Jun 22, 2018 at 02:03:39 PM EST
ready on the piano for my grandson's visit. His mother has said that I need to raise him, as I did my children, on the Beatles.

Yes, it has been a long and winding road, Sir Paul, since I saw you on your first Fab Four tour. My grandson will inherit the ticket stub from yhe 1964tour ($2.50! but that was teb hours of babaitting) and the songbook, the records, the first edition of John's first book, the Beatles playing cards . . . and the Beatles bikini underwear, still in the original packaging. That one may mean I have some ''splaining to do. . . .

But how to explain their impact on us in those terrifying times? Maybe showing my grandson this Korden show will begin to explain the sheer joy that the boys from Liverpool brought us.

Glad to hear that you still have your copy (none / 0) (#9)

of "A Spaniard in the Works." Same here. I hadn't given it any thought recently, but it seems that depending on condition those copies are worth anywhere from $150 to $5500, if you were inclined to sell. Speaking of Spaniards, I wonder what my (very beat up) first edition (1936) of "The Story of Ferdinand" might be worth, which my father left me.

For the past few days, Daughter Zorba and her husband were visiting, so I haven't had a chance to look at this before now.
I loved it!  (Although it sure makes me feel old!)
    Thank you, Jeralyn!

Roger Daltrey perform the entirety of "Tommy" with a Who-ish rock band (including Pete Townshend's sound-alike brother Simon), the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, and a chorus. A loud, appreciative and multi-generational audience (notably, Daltrey did not play "My Generation") at Philadelphia's outdoor arena in the park. A lot of fun. I needed that.

    Nice one... (5.00 / 1) (#4)

I missed this incarnation when Roger rolled through NY on 6/17...fresh off a Dead & Co. double header on 6/15 & 6/16 in Flushing Meadows I just could not do another one...as much as I would have liked too.

Made up for it though with John Fogerty & ZZ Top at Jones Beach Wednesday night.

I needed the great musical escapes too...we all need it!

Re: `Although it's tempting to think we know everything there is to know about the Beatles,`

I don't know anything about the Beatles but years ago I watched a gossip show on television that claimed Paul McCartney advised his friend Michael Jackson to purchase music ownership rights for songs only to find himself bidding (and losing) against Michael Jackson for the rights to Beatles songs.
