Merry Christmas Eve Open Thread

I'm off to buy Christmas gifts for the family. Karter already opened the one I got her -- she's sitting in it in the picture.

Please let us know how you are celebrating, and I'll be back later this evening.

A happy holiday eve to all!

She's got a nana who adores her, I'm sure. Here on the northern SF peninsula it's our first Christmas without my son living in the house. He moved into an apartment with two friends of his last week. Lives very close, but still...sigh. As such, our house feels empty. But my mother-in-law and wife and I are cozying it up. They are roasting a chicken for the Christmas Eve dinner, doing baby red potatoes with it. Christmas Day dinner is always a roast. Son will be by in a few minutes for eating and then gifts. Our 16 year-old marvel of a is dog napping soundly. Hoping for family viewing of Warriors-Lakers on Christmas Day, that son will stick around for it IOW. And here's the mostly final cover of my book, to be published on New Year's Day by Dr. Cicero Books. Oh the vanity...and shameless plugging.

    Peace & Love to all.

    And to you as well, D. (5.00 / 1) (#9)

I bought one of those for my youngest but it was a couch not a chair and this couch pulled out into a little bed. He used it so much he ended up destroying it and I had to put it in the trash. Just the other day we were talking about the little couch and how popular it was with him. I hope your grand enjoys it as much as my youngest did!

I've been doing some light yard work, raking leaves and trimming bushes, etc., and getting the place ready for the houseful of guests who arriving tonight. Elder Daughter and family fly in at 6:00 p.m., and my mother arrives three hours later. Having the grandkids, who are 3 and 1 years of age, respectively, for a few days will be fun. They both just had birthdays.

It's been a wet morning here in Hilo, but the sun's now trying to break through, and both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are snowcapped -- which is as close to a white Christmas as we're going to see. Hopefully, if we have a clear day, we'll head up to Mauna Kea for a day in the snow. (Here's what it looked like last Christmas.)

    Have a blessed day, everyone.

    Mystery subpoena (none / 0) (#8)
by CaptHowdy on Mon Dec 24, 2018 at 07:19:53 PM EST
It's the first time that the Supreme Court has had an opportunity to weigh in on Mueller's special counsel probe, CNN also notes. However, they haven't exactly leaped at the opportunity. They didn't turn it down cold, but they didn't rush to grant cert either. That decision will come sometime after the DoJ files its brief in response to the appeal on December 31 -- probably very soon after, if the history of this case gives any hint as to its future.

Someone won't have a very happy New Year, in other words. If the Supreme Court follows the lead of the lower courts or its thin precedent, don't bet on that someone being Robert Mueller.

Whether Mueller can subpoena records to the grand jury from a corporation that is owned by a foreign government. What corporation and what government are unknown.

Marcy Wheeler wonders if it's a bank or some finance co, I.e, Alfa Bank which was apparently in comms  w Trump campaign.

    Deutschbank would be....interesting.

But it would be fun if it were a Russian bank, wouldn't it? I was surprised to see that even their lawyers' names are redacted off the Supreme Court's public on-line docket.

    Deutschbank was already subpoenaed.

Saw a bobble head speculating it might be one of the Russian "V" banks.  VTE?  VTB?
