Trump Says Military Troops at Border Could Increase to 15,000

Via NBC: Donald Trump today said the number of U.S. troops deployed to the southwestern border may increase to 15,000 -- in addition to border agents and ICE.

This is so obviously a political ploy intended to get more votes for Republicans in next week's elections. Not only is it partisan use of the military, it's a waste of expense. 15,000 is more than 3 times the number of troops authorized in Iraq, and roughly the same number sent to Afghanistan.

How many people are in the caravans? Far fewer than the 15,000 troops being sent to prevent their entry. [More...]

The caravan isn't due here for weeks, and there are around 4,000 people in it.

Worn down from long miles of walking and frustrated by the slow progress, many migrants have done just that, dropping out and returning home or applying for protected status in Mexico. The initial group is significantly diminished from its estimated peak at more than 7,000 migrants. A caravan in the spring ultimately fizzled to just about 200 people who reached the U.S. border at San Diego.

Mexican Interior Secretary Alfonso Navarrete Prida said about 2,300 have applied to stay in Mexico under a government plan, and hundreds more have accepted assisted repatriation.

The second and third caravans have less than 1,000 people each.

A second, smaller group of 1,000 or so migrants who forced their way into Mexico on Monday was trailing some 250 miles back. They spent Tuesday night in the city of Tapachula.

Behind them, a third group of migrants from El Salvador had already made it to Guatemala, and on Wednesday a fourth group of about 700 Salvadorans set out from the capital, San Salvador, with plans to walk to the U.S. border, 1,500 miles away.

Donald Trump is not fit for a leadership position in the United States. He never was and never will be.

We may in a way be fortunate that he is ignoring his sane advisors and going full on batsh!t.

If he were to tone it down, even a little, if he as it's been reported he has been urged to do and flatly rejected gave a prime time oval office address on healing and unity, imagine the how the fawning slavering media would report that.

It would be reported like the freakin Gettysburg Address.  It would be the biggest news of his presidency.

I've thought for a long time if he moderated the public face just a little he would have way more support than he does

I think maybe we should thank god he is incapable of moderating anything.

It may in the end be what saves us.

They would be obeying an illegal order. Several military leaders have stepped forward saying as much too. And it is pretty unprecedented. They all just undermined Presidential military authority in a way we have never seen before in front of God and everyone but everything is so crazy who could notice that?

But there doesn't really exist a situation they could legally use it in. They can't even speak to anyone to clarify who they are because that entails law enforcement powers and they don't have those, they could be firing on Americans for all they know. Actually, technically everyone in the caravan is an American. They were all born in the Americas

by fishcamp on Fri Nov 02, 2018 at 10:12:40 AM EST
that several militia groups will be at the border to defend our nation.  These are the people I'm most concerned about.  I used to know some militia guys in Colorado and they were total whackos, and this was before semi-auto rifles were available.

Quite frankly I doubt Trump will send 15,000 troops to the border, but it makes him think he is powerful. It just amazes me that so many people believe his BS.  The past few caravans dwindled considerably by the time they made it to the border.  These poor travelers need help not bullets.

militia groups have been bad news for quite a while. Timothy McVeigh and the Michigan Militia. I'm sure there have been other incidents that are lower profile with these militia groups.

What makes me sad is conservatives cannot see these people as refugees desperately fleeing violence.

Last year wasn't it only a handful of refugees who came all the way to the US and requested asylum? The rest found jobs and new homes in Mexico. I was under the impression that their goal is a new safer life and most find that between here and what they are escaping

Hit Twitter immediately and said no. Reminded everyone in uniform that that order to fire on rock throwers is an illegal order. And I think it was Hertling who added he didn't know an officer or NCO who would even consider allowing their troops to do such a thing.

In old America, retired Generals deliberately gutting the perception of Presidential military authority on Twitter would have been an outrage. But it is so nuts right now it barely registers. We're living in a game show.
