Trump Makes Threats Over Caravan

Donald Trump is threatening to cut aid money to Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala if the migrant caravan is not stopped. He's also threatening to send the military to the southern border with Mexico.

Vox reports the caravan is unlikely to make it across the Mexican border. [More...]

The Mexican government has already announced that caravan members who enter Mexico illegally will be “rescued” and deported, and that caravan members can request asylum in Mexico but may be detained for up to 90 days if they do. (In April, Mexico allowed a caravan of more than 1,000 migrants to enter the country, but later forcibly dispersed them by offering a similar choice.)

According to NBC News, the Mexican government sent 500 federal police to the Mexico-Guatemala border Wednesday in anticipation of the caravan’s arrival.

Donald Trump and Republicans are fear-mongering. Unfortunately, lost in the political rhetoric is the real danger these migrants face. They aren't coming towards America to seek fortune and fame, they just want to stay alive.

has apparently decided that racism and sexism is what they are going to run on for midterms. Their mindset is well, it worked for Trump in 2016 and since nothing else seems to make Republican voters get off the couch they are gonna go for it.

I am skeptical that aid of any significance is being provided to anyone in Central America.

Foreign aid goes primarily to Israel and Egypt as I recall.

Here is the plug in country chart of foreign aid, listing disbursements and obligations by year.

2018 Disbursements to these countries are way less than they were in 2016, although the final numbers aren't in:

El Salvador: $42 million down from 90 million

Honduras: 52 million down from $152 million

Guatemala: 77 million, down from $297 million
