Update: 10:20 pm MT: After a day of contradictory reports, Tom Petty's manager confirmed a few minutes ago that he has passed away.

I can't believe it. Tom Petty has died after a sudden cardiac arrest.

RIP Tom, and thank you for the decades of fabulous music. You will be missed. [More...]

I only saw him in person once or twice. The one I remember most was at Red Rocks,and I danced and sang through the whole show. R.I.P. Tom Petty. You are, and forever will be, a true rock legend.

    but seriously.  going quickly is not really a bad thing.  i hope thats how it happens for me.   a cardiac arrest would not be my first choice but it would not be the last.

    that he was 10 years older than me - always figured he was my age. Maybe because people have always told me that I look like him.

    One of my prized LP's is a first pressing of Damn the Torpedoes. Now, one regret is that I never saw him live (that I remember anyway).

    with so much trouble in the world, it's not the time to lose a prince of peace like Tom F*ckin' Petty.

    So grateful I got to see him for the first and only time over the summer...and boy did he and the Heartbreakers bring it!

    I take solace in the fact he can strum along with Harrison and Orbison now at The End of The Line.

    I saw him 2 or 3 times and he always brought it full speed - Damn the Torpedoes! He was a very magnetic and charming stage presence, something I did not expect at all before I saw him live the first time.

    Once was in the rain out there in Denver at...dang the outdoor amphitheater in Greenwood Village, can't recall what it is called. It poured rain, but the audience did not care, and the band kept playing. Tons of fun.

    Another was in the 80's in LA at an indoor venue- maybe the Shrine Auditorium? The girl next to my friend and I threw up all on the floor under our seats so the ushers let us go down and stand in the aisle right in front of the stage. I will go to my grave believing Mike Campbell smiled at me.

    Way too soon to lose Tom. Only 7 years older than me. Ugh.

    As far as I can tell, he is still is alive (well, sort of).
    May his passing be painless.
    It's freaking me out, though.  He's younger than I am, and I have a bad heart.

    of seeing Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul last night...15 piece band opened with Tom Petty's "Even The Losers" and the crowd went wild.

    The music never dies...

    'Voice of America' is one of my favorite records, and even more relevant today. I remember thinking at the time that he sounded a lot like Tom Petty - I imagine they do great covers of Petty tunes. I'll have to see where the tour is going.

    is gonna get to you is Ft. Lauderdale 10/26...for me it would be worth a 4 hour drive but I don't know about you old pal!  Did I mention 15 piece band???

    I'd expect a Petty cover to become standard in his set...nice and funky rendition of James Brown's "Down and Out in New York City" too.

    Stevie made it a point to keep the between tunes banter apolitical, but his solo work still speaks relevant political volumes.
