Bush Brother Neil Joins Ted Cruz Campaign

Neil Bush has joined Ted Cruz' campaign and will serve on his national finance team. That seems to be a fancy name for a money bundler.

Was Ted Cruz in Canada in the 80's? Did he miss Neil Bush's role in the Silverado Savings and Loan scandal?

The New York Times reported in 1990:

In a lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in Denver, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation stopped short of charging fraud. But it said that in the three years Mr. Bush was a director of the Silverado Banking, Savings and Loan Association, he violated conflict-of-interest regulations and failed to act to stop the institution from making improper loans, and in some cases illegal loans.

....Silverado collapsed in December 1988 with $2.3 billion in assets.

He's not exactly a paragon of evangelical virtue or family values. More here and here. It wasn't the press that initiated the scrutiny into his marriage, it was him and his former wife. (The paternity test was negative.)

Neil says he didn't discuss his decision with his family before telling CNN about it. Perhaps not surprising -- when he remarried in 2004, neither Jeb nor GW attended. (Either did his daughter.)

Then there's this from 2006.

What's in it for Neil Bush? If he raises $500k for Cruz, he gets to be on the national finance team. Cruz' campaign put out this pamphlet in 2015 about how it will reward top bundlers. Here's a summary of what Neil stands to get:

[...]an invitation to a special retreat with Cruz and his wife Heidi, as well as an invitation to a quarterly dinner with the couple at their home. This top level of fundraising is considered the “Founders” level.

Raising half a million dollars will also provide the fundraiser with regular campaign leadership reports and give him or her a VIP Republican National Convention package that includes a hospitality suite and VIP reception at the convention. The bundler will also have access to host committee receptions to events in their home state.

Sounds like the financial equivalent of a groupie.

kept calling him 'Jeb's brother'. Not sure if the brain trust over there just did not know who he was or if they were trying to insinuate it was GWB. They covered it with their usual depth.

all the mess at Silverado was going on. Never was sure that what Neil did was a criminal act but the bad judgement shown should have been enough for Cruz to say, "Thanks but no thanks."

In east central Denver, as well as Littleton, I'd suggest that the Neil news is cause for a good laugh.  Neil and his other far eastern escapades fit the definition of a "laughing stock."
