Move On's Latest E-Mail List Enhancement Scheme

You've probably seen the latest scheme from Move On:

MoveOn.org Political Action announced today that it will hold a formal vote of its membership to determine whether the organization will endorse a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination prior to the first caucuses and primaries.

Nothing wrong with that as far as it goes. I think we have a pretty good idea how that votes gonna go given Move On's hostility to Clinton. But no big deal Except for this:

If you are not sure if you are a member or know you are not yet a member and would like to become one prior to the start of voting, simply signing any MoveOn Petition or filling out the “your email*” box on the MoveOn.org homepage and then clicking the “Join MoveOn” button will ensure that you are added as a member and that you will receive a ballot. [Emphasis mine.]

So, for the sake of argument, if 10 million Republicans joined today to game the result, that's cool right? Of course that's not going to happen. But what is going to happen is Move On will capture a lot of contact info from folks, all for what?

We know why - to get more contact info into their list so they can make more money. Move On could do this without this tawdry trolling for contact info. But that would defeat the actual purpose wouldn't it?

Speaking for me only.

    Move on already endorsed Sanders.

IMO Move On jumped the shark long ago.

I think they were a good single issue group - censure and move on. The fact that they now need these 'votes' to determine which issues they want to tackle...I don't know, I guess the democratic spirit is good, but it seems more like a lack of focus to me.

    Who cares.

I unsubscribed so long ago that I really have stopped receiving all their emails. It took forever to make them all stop, and I'm not poking that bear again.

Or find some people to run it who can tear their eyes away from their own navels long enough to get a grip on reality.

... fifteen years ago. Now, they're too enthralled by their own reflection to notice that everyone else has, you know, actually moved on. I don't waste my time with them any more.

A political organization wanting to stockpile email addresses? Would this diary have been made if they had already endorsed Hillary?

    Interesting choice of words.

If someone were, for example, critical of Clinton for her criticism of Obama for not supporting the rebels in Syria soon enough, and blaming him for the mess that is now unfolding, would that constitute "hostility"?

Would it be ok to experience disapproval of her positions on certain issues without being condemned as "hostile"?

    That's not what Move On does (5.00 / 1) (#12)
