Merry New Years Eve Open Thread

TalkLeft was down from yesterday until just now. The hosting Company in New York had a problem, moved the site to new hardware, and then could not establish network connectivity until just now. Hopefully it's all fixed. A big thanks to our webmaster Colin who kept at them to hurry up.

This is an open thread, Happy New Year's Eve to all. What are your plans tonight? [More...]

I'm staying in. I'm going to watch "New Year's Eve" with Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Hector Elizondo, Lea Michelle, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more, even though I watched it Christmas Eve. After that, I'll probably watch "Love Actually", and if I'm in the mood to laugh a lot, "Outsourced" (the movie, not the series)

Then it will be either Lasagna,

or green chile.

It's been icy cold here all week, still not sure which one to do.

Again, this is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Have you tried a thundershirt? (5.00 / 3) (#72)

Do you have another dog? Do you keep him in a crate when you leave? Sorry so many questions. It is one of my favorite problems to solve with a dog. I did have one though that nothing worked on.

by Militarytracy on Thu Dec 31, 2015 at 10:45:46 PM EST
And came across something that unexpectedly worked. I discovered it by accident. I bathed a dog I was working with a few years ago, and crated him. I put a light fan on him to speed his drying and it soothed him. He doesn't need a fan on now. He transitioned, but it was the start of him relaxing when he was alone in a crate.

    I've heard of thurdershirts, do they work well? (5.00 / 2) (#81)
by McBain on Thu Dec 31, 2015 at 11:04:14 PM EST
I don't have another dog.  He sleeps in a crate at night and I crate him when I leave for work or something.... usually 2-3 hours.

Lately, I've had a little success using a kong filled with peanut butter.  I leave the TV on for background noise, run the dishwasher so he can't  hear me leave, and run a fan but not blowing on him.  Are you suggesting I point the fan at him?

    Parent

    I let the fan lightly blow on him (5.00 / 2) (#83)
by Militarytracy on Thu Dec 31, 2015 at 11:15:58 PM EST
Thundershirts do help some dogs. I did have one dog that had very serious issues that it did not work for. He was chewing his way out of a standard wire crate though and also chewing his way out of houses. Thundershirts do need to be removed when you get home though, or a dog can become desensitized to the affect. They feel a hug, may be similar to how swaddling newborns calms them.

McBain: My advice will be corny, but ... (none / 0) (#175)
by christinep on Sat Jan 02, 2016 at 04:05:50 PM EST
Extra time & attention and (this is the hard one for all of us, probably) patience add up to the best results.  Play ... lots.  Talk with your dog; soothe her.  Love on her with your acts & words.  Really.  Humans like it; dogs like love, play, & attention just as much.  Because it is about belonging and real security.

I love my dog very much ... especially now that she is evolving into a dog after the challenges of newness & puppyhood.

Stick with it ... eventually, your dog will be trustworthy all the way around (even, and especially, out of the crate.)

    The dog I was fostering got adopted today (5.00 / 3) (#180)
by McBain on Sat Jan 02, 2016 at 10:50:33 PM EST
I don't think your advice is corny.  I talk and play with the dogs I take care of quite a bit.  It's at least half of why I sign up for the duty. This particular dog loves human affection.

I got to talk to the previous foster owner and found out some very interesting things about the dog's background..... some are too sad to go into detail.  I'll just say he had his share of abuse.

Knowing all this now, I'm surprised his behavior wasn't worse.  I'm surprised he likes people as much as he does.

Fortunately, the couple who adopted him are very serious about providing a loving and comfortable home. This dog had terrible luck to start his life but hit the jackpot in terms of finding people who care about him.

very abused dogs recover with he kind of close attention and love you provide.

A good friend has an 11 year old rescue Dobie that was abused, and then a Katrina puppy. You can imagine how scared and damaged he was. He is still scared of storms and a little suspicious of men at first, but he is the sweetest thing, loves people and other dogs, and the fact that a dog of that breed is 11 and going strong is testament to her loving care.

Thank you for helping the dogs!

I want that pot of chili right here, right now.  My second batch of house guests just left, finally, so it's a stay home night for me.  The ball will drop in NYC as the Orange drops in Miami.  They do a shoe or slipper drop in Key West, but that will be on the news later or tomorrow for me.  The Florida keys, and all the restaurants are very crowded this week.  One of the renters down the street started blasting fireworks at 10:45 pm last night, and one of my cats hasn't come home yet.  Guess I'm turning into one of those 'you kids get off my yard' old guys. Or in my case, you rats stay off my boat.  Happy New Year.

by Repack Rider on Thu Dec 31, 2015 at 11:44:40 AM EST
... for a long time.  New Year's Eve was always booked and it always paid very well.  I worked on some of Bill Graham's legendary NYE shows with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, etc.

It was a tradition at those shows that the Grateful Dead always hit the downbeat exactly at midnight.  The group I worked for played earlier in the bill, so I was finished for the evening before midnight.

On one of those shows I was done for the evening around 10:00, and ready to party.  But the Dead entourage had filled the backstage area far above the fire law capacity, and even though I had every form of backstage pass, the security guard wouldn't let me in.

I did not party in front of the stage, because I always had backstage privileges.  So I went home, and flipped on the FM broadcast of the show.  And I heard that some stoner had climbed out on one of the huge rafters, creating a major problem and delaying the show.

    But I was already home.

Now that no one pays me to leave the house on NYE, I don't.

    No one is paying me (5.00 / 2) (#34)

And lots of champagne.  Nobody is driving anywhere.
Tomorrow, a simple dinner of pasta with a couple of different sauces, and Italian sausages.  Salad, garlic bread, and a pan of brownies for desert, with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream, and chocolate sauce if anyone wants even more chocolate.  (If you are sensing a "chocolate" theme here, you would be correct; we love chocolate.)

When Marco Rubio was majority whip of the Florida House of Representatives, he used his official position to urge state regulators to grant a real estate license to Orlando Cicilia, his brother-in-law, a convicted cocaine trafficker who had been released from prison 20 months earlier.

Rubio did not disclose in the letter that Cicilia was married to his sister, Barbara, or that the former cocaine dealer was living at the time in the same West Miami home as Rubio's parents. He wrote that he had known Cicilia "for over 25 years," without elaborating.

And this was before he hooked up with the ethically challenged David Rivera.

Very few of my friends made any effort to put together NYE plans...I think our Christmas bash has begun to tire us out more, now that we're older. It's just too frosty cold outside right now and I want the cocoon of my (semi!) warm house.

Yesterday, after the site went down, I paid some bills, and started back reading a book that was included in my non-fiction subscription for the year, "The Boys of My Youth" by Jo Ann Beard. It's a memoir that flits back and forth in time, and is told with such humor that it's hard to put down. She really nails it. Now I want to read her novel, "In Zanesville."

I believe that if people are gracious enough to host a party and invite me, it's polite to attend. And it almost always turns out to be fun. If it's a major holiday or a milestone event of some sort, that's even more reason. Whenever someone I know is feeling down about a milestone birthday coming up, and grumbling about not feeling like celebrating getting old, I always say, "You're going to turn forty/fifty/sixty anyway, so you may as well celebrate it and have a nice memory of it later."

My city throws a very nice day time party for its seniors each New Years Eve. There is a live band, beer and wine, a catered dinner (our local caterer does a good job) and a lot of really nice attendance prizes.

Had my big dinner there, danced quite a lot and had a glass wine. Now I'm resting up before getting ready for our dance club party this evening where the food is always abundant and you dance until you drop or until midnight whichever comes first.

has great lyrics and I really like it, but as a  New Year's Eve song, I don't know. Here are all the lyrics. (It is #2 on my itunes sleep playlist that I play every night so obviously I really like it -- but it is pretty sad, for a festive occasion):

I loved you when our love was blessed
and I love you now there's nothing left
but sorrow and a sense of overtime

...Yeah I missed you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
    it's CLOSING TIME

I guess sometimes the ringing in of a new year means shedding the old and starting over. For that, I like Goodbye to You by Patty Smyth and Scandal -- it's so upbeat and she's very empowering when she sings it.

It's another of my favorite Cohen songs (video here), but I really like this version by Don Henley that he sang at the Clinton Gore inaugural ball in 1993 (I didn't upload this to You Tube but I recorded it at the time on VCR and converted it and now have it on my iTunes. Every time I've tried to upload it to You Tube the Henley censors knock it off. So watch it soon as it may not be up long.)

Unrelated: I used to have a pair of sunglasses just like Henley's in the video. Mine were by Matsuda -- they may have been this pair. I lost them at a Grateful Dead concert in the mid-90's. I still miss them all the time, but my days of forking over that kind of money for sunglasses are way behind me. I wonder if he still has his.

That performance was the trigger to my seeking out the Leonard Cohen album "The Future". Soul Asylum also played at that inaugural ball and I got "Grave Dancer's Union" at the same time.

That was the MTV inaugural ball. Here is an REM/U2 collaboration at that ball which I had forgotten about. They named themselves Automatic Baby, a mashup of REM's "Automatic for the People" album and U2's "Achtung Baby". And, okay, I have those albums as well. In fact I have tracks from them on my phone right now. Listen to it in my car.

    That was one awesome show.

And that was when Dennis Miller was still sane.

Was a conservative before 9/11.   Might have brought him all the way out but he had been making noises for years before that.   I know this because I keep track of what happened when by where I was working and with who.   I had a friend in the 90s that I regularly had arguments with over Millers wisdom on this or that.   He was a big fan.  I really never was.

I googled "when did Dennis Miller become a conservative"-

This was in the '90s, when the "PC" movement had a major influence in society. Miller railing against it as he does here is hardly something one would expect from a liberal. Admittedly, comedians of all political persuasions tend be in favor of being able to joke about whatever they like, but Miller's argument that jokes at the expense of homosexuals are ultimately not harmful is hardly something you'd expect a virulent left-winger to claim. Clearly, reports of Miller's liberalism were greatly exaggerated.

But if Dennis Miler was never a liberal, how did we get the idea that he was one in the first place? That can likely be explained as a simple matter of timing. America first became acquainted with Miller's sardonic humor as the anchor of SNL`s Weekend Update segment, a position he held from 1985 to 1991. Think about those years for a second; what do they have in common? A Republican was in the White House for all of them. Miller anchored Update during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Naturally, this meant he made fun of them. A big part of comedy -- especially political comedy -- is to always go after those in power.

For the first six years that Miller was in the public eye, the country was run by Republicans, so he did his duty as a comic and poked fun at them. This didn't necessarily mean he vehemently disagreed with their policies -- long time SNL writer James Downey is a well-known Republican and that never stopped him from poking fun at the right -- it simply meant that he was going to make fun of whoever was in charge. If we had gotten to know Miller during a time when the democrats were in charge, the notion that Miller was a liberal might have never existed in the first place.

They do say conventional wisdom puts it at 9/11 but I remember the 90s.  Probably only because of my friend.

I agree with every word of the "PC rant".  About gays and everything else.  The PC curse is like the frog in boiling water thing.  It's crept up on us in such insidious ways we have forgotten what humor was like in, for example, the 70s.

Last night I spent hours watching Fernwoid 2Night on YouTube.   You want to know what PC has done?   Try it.
It was hilarious and amazing.  80% of the stuff they did could NEVER be done now.   It was crass.   It was pointed.  It was fearless.   It was brutal.   And you know what?  It was FUNNY.  And that was a little sad.

I really recommend a few episodes of Fernwood 2Night.  Yeah, I thought I remembered it too.

I know I was here during the primaries of the 2008 election, when I had to delete so many other websites from my list because they all went wacko.

I've been here long enough to miss some voices (what ever happened to jeffinalabama?) and to appreciate others (militarytracy and donaldinhawawaii and dadler and CaptHowdy and Anne and fishcamp and kdog and .....)

But he struggled with his illness for so long, and if this is so then his soul is now at peace. He was a good man, and given the pain he must have been in we mustn't begrudge his taking leave of us, and we can keep his family in our thoughts.

If anything has changed for the better over the last few decades in our struggle to grapple with the concept of death and mortality, it's that we now seek more to remember and celebrate the life of the departed, rather than dwell so relentlessly on our own loss.

We've still got kale and mustard greens in the garden, standing up under a light snow.  Tough stuff, brassica.

Why do you have a photograph of a P5M on your blog?

That's the plane my father flew.  A year or so ago his surviving squadron mates held a reunion at Pensacola.  After the reunion a friend of his sent me a copy of the reunion recap, with the accident report describing the investigation of my father's crash as its preface.  An analog torquemeter's final reading figured in the conclusion.  Everything hinged on a needle's impact imprint on a phosphorescent dusted dial.  I'd almost forgotten how analog and physical instrumentaion used to be.  The meter reading led to a conclusion of probable pilot error, flying too low in the face of a cold front and uncertain wind vectors.  I had wondered about that my entire adult life, had never had the courage to ask.  It was not an answer I wanted to hear.  But there it was, typed, black and white, cold.

It's really none of my business, but I wonder about that P5M.

last week from a federal court in another jurisdiction that supervised release (the federal version of parole)  had been terminated early for a client I represented there around 8 years ago. That's a good thing, but I wasn't the one who filed the motion, so I clicked through the link to see the order and why the court ended it early.

Turns out, it was because he died. He was only 52. I was very sad. He was always such a pleasant guy, always had a smile on his face, making the best of things, even while locked up without bail, 2,000 miles from home.

It was as you say, a stark (or "in your face" reminder of our mortality.

The AAC champion Cougars, who finished the year at 13-1, controlled the entire game and dominated the Seminoles, leaving one to wonder why the pundits are insisting upon calling this an upset when Houston was quite obviously the better team.

Considering the Cougars' victories this season over Louisville (24-21), Vanderbilt (34-0), Cincinnati (33-30), Memphis (35-34), Navy (52-31) and Temple (24-13), it's pretty apparent that those same pundits weren't paying much if any attention to them for the entire season. Houston is easily a Top Ten team that was never really given its just due by those supposedly in the know. And were it not for stubbing their toes at Connecticut in a 20-17 loss, they'd have likely been undefeated but still left out of the CFP.

If the NCAA is going to do a college football playoff, then they need to do a REAL playoff with all ten FBS conference champions, and not this selective four-team ESPN Invitational they're staging. Looking at their overall performance this season and the statement they made in Atlanta today, one can legitimately wonder why the Houston Cougars weren't included.

I refuse to listen to hm whine.  This is from Variety-

They looked at the stories, and they said, `We want to make something for the fans,'" Lucas said. "They decided they didn't want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing. ... They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway -- but if I get in there, I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I want them to do. And I don't have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up," he said. "And so I said, `OK, I will go my way, and I'll let them go their way.'"

Um, George, YOU destroyed the franchise.  YOU made three ridiculous self indulgent silly movies that to this day are a running joke.
Yes, George, I can totally see how they would not want your fat fingers anywhere near the reboot.

Out of respect for you and your former slavemates, I sat through all the credits.  They scrolled kinda fast.  They raced up the screen.  One group alone credited over 300 digital artists.  This was for a film supposedly relying heavily on model making.

I could not see the boundaries.

I saw a few flubs - like when the junk dealer offers Ren a pile of money for the droid, placing the pile of money on the counter.  She says no and grabs her pittance from the otherwise empty counter.  This is immediately followed by the junk dealer grabbing back his pile of money from the money covered counter.  Parsecs again made the transition from distance to time, but I'm pretty sure that was ironic.

My only objection is that in an age in which there existed the technology to vacuum up the energy of an entire star, people still had to aim (badly) hand held guns.  And they had to manually steer their spaceships.

The film was a homage on many levels.  For me it began with the slight horizontal jitter of the introductory titling.  A simulation, I thought, of the worn bearings or sprockets or holes of an old print on a 70s era projector?  At least that's what it looked like to me.  The theatre was new and 3D, any real jitter would have been fatal.

I remember when single frame images, shading and texture demos or a couple of ray tracings, made a splash at SIGGRAPH.  Rendering, barely a word at the time, took for.ev.er.

Like I said, I could not detect the boundaries between the real, the models, and the synthetic.

I talk to kids all the time who spent small fortunes going to school and can't get a job.  So imagine what it was like being 60 yo.  I was not old enough to be a father to most of my coworkers it was grandfather.  By the time I left I was happy to take the good memories and go.  All my friends still doing it are miserable and can't wait to join me.
Most still have a few years since I got to film rather late.  44 when I got my first film job. Even them at least 10-20 years younger was the norm but I had 20 years of Computer graphic experience having worked in broadcast and other stuff.

But Martin O'Malley failed to acquire enough valid signatures to be on the primary ballot in Ohio. He only needed 1000. With the Ohio primary set for March 15, looks like a sure sign he'll be done sooner rather than later...not that there was ever much doubt, but this type of news should send what little staff he has scurrying to their next job.

    I honestly don't know how he's (5.00 / 1) (#108)

hung in this long...but then what?  Does he choose sides, or choose the sidelines until someone locks up a nomination?  Does he put his energy into getting down-ticket Dems elected?

    Guess we'll know soon enough.

    Stanford crushed Iowa (none / 0) (#160)

in the Rose Bowl.  Therefore, wife (Stanford grad) is happy. The Philadelphia Mummers Parade admitted three new musical marching groups - one Puerto Rican, one Mexican, one African-American (steppers). The event is no longer all white ethnics, all male, or all drunk; another big step away from this century-old tradition's endemic racism (the elimination of black-face about 20 years ago was the first big step). All in all, a good New Year's Day.

She did her undergrad at Stanford but in one of the great political suck-ups, said she was pulling for the Iowa Hawkeyes rather than her alma mater. That went about as well as her time at HP.

    The Vols over Northwestern..

We lost 4 games by a total of 17 points.

Maybe the media was overlooking us.

face a diminished TCU. I do not think it will be as good a game now that the TCU QB has gotten himself arrested and suspended from the team.

Maybe TCU will be a team obsessed due to their QB's antics. Whatever.

    GO, DUCKS!!!!!!!

Although the analysts on ESPN did pick TN to win.

No four loss team (none / 0) (#174)

at the end of the regular season is going to be ranked in the top 20. That's just the way it works.

But an SEC team with the close losses as you described is going to have the financial backers once they head out of conference. Especially when NW was smoked by both top 20 teams they played this season. That performance by Tennessee also helps  explain why Alabama opened as a 6 point favorite against #1 Clemson. Not that Bama will necessarily win if they can't shutdown the speedy running QB Clemson puts on the field. (no matter how many Clemson players are suspended for failed drug tests)

I understand the "line" and what it (none / 0) (#179)

    is supposed to do.

And I concede the 4 losses point.

But how do we get strength of schedule to actually mean something?
