Saturday Night Open Thread

Update: Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has joined the protests in Ferguson. He grew up in St. Louis. Here's his verified Twitter feed.

Check out #ISIS Movies, it's trending on Twitter. Some of them are really funny. Both ISIS supporters and haters are participating, as are journalists and analysts.

ISIS (official, not supporters)have given up on Twitter which keeps deleting its accounts. They are now on joindiaspora (list of accounts here.) Don't just get your news from their enemies.

Also check out the new Top 100 Crime Experts to follow on Twitter (and yes, Talkleft is on it.)

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

That secular Sunnis in the triangle have reached out to us seeking help in fighting ISIS, and that we have a recorded history of already working with some of them, I would expect the air strikes against ISIS to grow and perhaps even more military "advisors" to be sent to Iraq.

It's a little tough.  I always knew there had to be a lot of loss getting to where we are now in the surgery, but wow...and cocaine addicts got us here.  They lived in a state of trauma bringing us forward.

I rewatched Penny Dreadful with my husband.  He loved it and it was very enjoyable watching it with him a second time.  We binged on it for stress control.  Josh is doing great though, his trunk muscles get stronger and stronger daily.

I started watching The Strain with husband too.  Now if I had known it was about Vampires, that's completely different.  So I am watching that too now without him here, and husband is upset he is going to miss some.

The Leftovers has me so intrigued I don't know who is coming or going.

For doctors of that time to be addicts.
The racial storyline is something.  We are not post racial but sometimes we forget just what people of color had to deal with.

Love the strain.  But I knew I would.

    Good new of Josh.

I'm on an anti-inflammatory diet, trying to avoid hip surgery, and it's amazing how many delicious foods there are on any diet. Luckily on the west coast there is almost always great salmon. It's expensive but the savings on other foods makes that OK. Slow cooked salmon medium rare with a frittata with goat cheese and veggies and dark green salad with an olive and flax seed oil dressing make a wonderful meal for guests.

...using a alder plank to cook salmon on the grill.

I am not embellishing when I say that we were all stunned by the taste.

It was a trial run for a camping trip.  I was trying to figure how to cook a couple things over a fire without buying gear that wouldn't get use after the trip.

I have since bough planks for lamb, salmon, and pork chops.  Alder was recommended, but there is hickory, redwood, and cedar.  They work sell for anything that takes time to cook that would normally get dried out using a grill over a camp fire.

We salmon fish every year and he wanted a new way to do it on his gas grill. We just have to remember to get the planks out and soak them, so it isn't something we can do spur of the moment.

...with that as I get a better flavor preheating the board for a couple minutes.  The key, so far seems to get the board to burn as much as possible without burning through before it's done.

When I get back form the trip I am going to see if I can get some green boards as green wood tends to smoke a lot more and it might not have to be soaked.

I thought it was some bougie non-sense; years ago I used to buy single salmon servings that came with a small plank and I would toss the plank and broil the fish.

I am going to try to find a plank big enough for a pizza.

If you are making your own pizza, probably better to fit the dough to the plank and make individual servings.

The worst thing you can do it overcook it.  Mr. Angel does the grilling/smoking and I do the baking/poaching.  Usually I'll just poach a filet in white wine with sliced carrots and celery to add a little flavor.  It's delicious cold and makes a great party food.  I can't tell you the raves I get when I take it to an event.

Mr. Angel has an electric smoker that he loves using.  In fact, he smoked about 15 pounds yesterday and took all but one large filet to his office for his employees to share.  The last filet we gave to our next door neighbors for their dinner last night.

...in the process of showing the Michael Brown cigar video, refers to Ferguson Market and Liquor as a gas station (in none of the pictures of it have I seen any indication of gas pumps), and calls it the QT.

A week later and they still can't even get something simple like which store it was right.

But they did run it in slo-mo and I was able to find out that Johnson put the cigars he was handed back on the counter, apparently when the fuss with the female clerk started, so he is off the hook for any shoplifting or abetting.

However, although the male clerk has what appear to be a set of keys in his hand, it's not clear from the video if he's actually trying to lock the door or just get between it and Brown.

    RIP, Sophie Masloff (1917-2014). (none / 0) (#9)
by Donald from Hawaii on Mon Aug 18, 2014 at 12:11:53 PM EST
Former Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff, who succeeded to the office at age 70 upon the death of her predecessor and proceeded to oversee her city as it completed its turbulent transition from an over-reliance on steel manufacturing to its present status as a high tech and cultural hub of the Allegheny region, died yesterday at 96.

A court clerk for 38 years who won election to the Pittsburgh City Council in 1976, Mrs. Masloff was serving as that body's president in May 1988 when popular Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri died of a rare blood disorder two years into his third term.

Under the city charter's order of succession, she became Pittsburgh's first female and first Jewish mayor, and was remembered for having made tough and in some instances unpopular decisions, to her city's long-term benefit. Ignoring warnings from Allegheny County leaders to not interfere, she went to court to successfully bring an end to a countywide public transit strike that was crippling her city.

Publicly facing down critics who challenged her decision to cut the reviled city wage tax, she shamed them into silence by saying that she was doing so for "our children and grandchildren, so that they might still choose to live here." Her decision is partly credited with halting the flight of city residents to the suburbs.

Aloha to a colorful and unique political character.

    RIP, Don Pardo (1917-2014). (none / 0) (#30)
by Donald from Hawaii on Tue Aug 19, 2014 at 12:56:21 AM EST
Suddenly, a generation feels a little older. Don Pardo, the legendary NBC announcer and pop culture icon whose off-stage baritone voice opened each episode of "Saturday Night Live" for 39 seasons, died today in Tucson, AZ at age 96.

Cast members have come and gone over the decades, and the show has certainly had its ups and downs, but Pardo's voice became such a signature staple of "Saturday Night Live" throughout most of our lives that it's hard to imagine the show without its touchstone. As former SNL member Maya Rudolph recalled in a video tribute at his 2010, induction into the Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, hearing him announce her name for the very first time was a thrill she'd never forget.

    Aloha to a true original.
