World Cup Round of 16, Day 2

Mexico has been playing inspired soccer. Miguel "El Pio" Herrera has worked wonders since being named to head the team last October. Today El Tri face the Netherlands, which has been a powerhouse.I like the upset here -- Round of 16 - Fortaleza, Mexico Pick (+165) over Netherlands. Also Over 2½ (+115).

CONCACAF is also represented by Costa Rica today, the surprise winner of Group D, with England and Italy sent home early. They catch a good draw, facing an underwhelming Greece.

Round of 16 - Recife, Costa Rica Pick over Greece. Also Over 2 (+110).

We're all Africans today as we root for upsets of old European powers.

Nigeria playing tough, Nil-Nil at the half against the French.

Algeria v. Germany to follow at 4 pm EST.

    outside of France? ;)

Africa may not technically be New World, but they've suffered the same imperialism and colonial oppression.  If it can't be West Side, let it be South Side.

So, in order of preference, I'll be rooting for the US, Costa Rica, Colombia, Algeria, Argentina, and lastly host Brasil.  Anybody but Germany, France, Belgium, and the Swiss.

The age old sports question of "do you swallow the whistle?" because of the context or is a "foul a foul"?

    I lean to the latter.

in stoppage time imo, but in the first half Robben was fouled in the box and no call.  Dems the breaks.  Mexico lost the game when they went in a shell after scoring, and having no answer for the Dutch formation change late in the second half.  Like in American Football, all the prevent defense does is prevent you from winning.  Brutal loss for El Tri...so close, so close.   But a very good show in the tourney, total about face from qualifying.  And they found themselves a keeper at keeper, Ochoa played rwally well.

At least Costa Rica represented for the West Side...what an effort to hang in there down a man and win it on penalties.

this is a popular vacation week...deader than dead.  But with my luck the phones/fax/email will blow up again at the most inopportune time.

I'll have to make due with the gamecast play by play, and pedal to the metal once Mr. Slate blows the whistle.  Hope John Law uses Jurgen's letter and there's no speed traps on the way home! ;)

An individual performance for the ages by our world-class keeper.  Stay fit for 2018 Tim, we need ya!

We're closer than perhaps we've ever been, but not there yet, we were no match for the skill of the Belgians. Without Super Howard, it might have been 5-Nil.  But our teamwork and effort are world-class.  Let's hope Jurgen sticks around and can develop some more skill players to team with the promising youth of Yedlin, Johnson, Brooks, and Green.

That is what I love about soccer.  Americans love to have superstars, and having a soccer superstar can be great but sometimes they have an adverse affect on teamwork.  And you can have a soccer team with no superstar but have their teamwork down pat, and with a strong steady offense and defense you can take the Cup.

It is time to acknowledge that the US has begun to master teamwork on the soccer field....enough to be a contender.
