World Cup Day 12

Groups A and B finish today in relatively unclimactic fashion, as both groups are basically decided, with one exception - Mexico v. Croatia, which is the marquee game of the day. It kicks off at 4 pm. There is some drama in the Chile v. Netherlands tilt, in that one imagines both will want to avoid Brazil in the Round of 16, and winning their group is how to do it. The other games lack drama.

Yesterday I went 2-1, with good payoffs. Today's picks:

Group B - Curitiba, Spain -1½ (+115) over Australia. The end of an era. Spain's scrubs are all stars too.

Group B - São Paulo, Chile Pick over Netherlands. Get the feeling Chile more excited to be here. Plus great fan contingent will keep Chile energized.

Group A - Brasília, Brazil -2½ over Cameroon. Brazil has qualified but can realistically lose top group spot to Mexico, either outright or on goal differential. what's not realistic is Brazil losing this game, though rumors of match fixing have been swirling.

Group A - Recife, Croatia vs. Mexico, Draw +250. Two very good teams, Arguably Croatia has more talent, but Mexico on better form. Through sheer effort, I think El Tri gets through (draw qualifies them for Round of 16.).

    Nil-Nil at the half...looks like Croatia has had more chances.

    Just gotta keep Ochoa's net empty for 45-50 more minutes and El Tri is through.

    LOL! Brazil takes too much pride in this, and has too much at stake. And were such a flop to occur, the players' lives would be worth squat in the resultant riots.

    Is starting to roll in.  Just made a run to my sisters for green beans and squash.  Now I am bookmarking squash and zucchini recipes.  Favorite so - chicken sausage marinara zucchini boats.

    Obviously Spain is disappointed this year, but in this win, for me, it was refreshing to see soccer players who when they scored acted like it wasn't the first time they ever scored.

    Supreme Court limits greenhouse gas regulations

    The 5-4 ruling, which partially reverses a 2012 federal appeals court decision, represents a moral but somewhat hollow victory for industry and state government opponents of the federal regulations. They have complained that the rules could cost billions of dollars to implement and threaten thousands of jobs.

    But the court said the EPA can regulate greenhouse gas emissions from industries already required to get permits for other air pollutants. Those generally are the largest power plants, refineries and other industrial facilities responsible for most such emissions.

    "Today is a good day for all supporters of clean air and public health and those concerned with creating a better environment for future generations," the EPA said in a release. "The Supreme Court's decision is a win for our efforts to reduce carbon pollution, because it allows EPA, states and other permitting authorities to continue to require carbon pollution limits in permits for the largest pollution sources."

    Thus far, Chile-Brazil is one, and Mexico-Netherlands is the other. As for the latter, my heart says Mexico, but my head says the Dutch have too much firepower to follow my heart. Oh, f--- it, what do I care? I haven't been wagering on the games.

    a reference to the trouble the Mexican Federation is in because of a customary heckle of the opposing goalie by their fans.  But as of today FIFA has decided not to fine them....which is the right call imo, I witnessed this chant when I went to a Chivas game in Estadio Jalisco, my feeling is "puto" translates more closely to the common American english heckle of "You Suck!" in this context than it does to an anti-gay slur.  The dictionary definition fwiw is "male whore", no specific sexual orientation, but like all slang it depends on the context.

    Is this as big a deal as my techie friends think?  Tesla giving away their patents because they say technology is now moving to fast for patent law to keep up?

    There is no reason trademark law and patent law are really that similar.  Anyway, as a non lawyer I guess it's my job to ask stupid questions.  It's something I have a natural talent for.
