World Cup Day 11

This is the most important day in USA soccer history since the last most important day in USA soccer history But seriously, it is a huge day, USA needs to not leave qualifying for Round of 16 to a game with Germany where Germany is not already through. Klinsmann needs to design an approach that is intended to play for the win, not be content with a draw. Ghana WILL beat Portugal. The USA needs to do that today.

In the early game, Group H - Rio De Janeiro, I like Belgium EVEN over Russia. Belgium is one of the top teams in the tournament and finally found itself in the second half of its opening game. Russia seems lackluster.

In the second game, two weak teams meet, Group H - Porto Alegre, South Korea vs. Algeria, I pick Draw +230.

The marquee game, USA v Portugal, is in the Amazon rain forest. Group G - Manaus. I believe the USA needs to win this game. I believe they will not. DRAW (+300).

Go USA!

With Stephen Colbert that is even funnier than it originally was because the US beat Ghana, and Germany tied with Ghana.

I don't know who to pick in the South Korea vs Algeria match.  I'll root for South Korea since they are feeding and sheltering our soldier right now.  I don't like to mix politics with my soccer, so I'm breaking my own rule today.

Where is kdog?   USA needs him today.  I'll pick Portugal because I have been wrong at every turn about the US team and it's been working for them :)

Manaus is a big and modern city. (none / 0) (#3)

BTD: "The marquee game, USA v Portugal, is in the Amazon rain forest."

The Spouse and I have been there. With nearly two million residents, Manaus is hardly the tropical backwater that your curt and somewhat unfair description of it might otherwise imply. It's the major port city servicing the region, and the Amazon River at that point is nearly as wide as Puget Sound. The stereotypical Amazonian world as was once envisioned in Werner Hertzog's "Fitzcarraldo" has long since largely passed.

By virtue of its latitude, Manaus is obviously in the tropics. For that matter, so are the U.S. cities of Honolulu, HI and San Juan, PR. And like Manaus, both are also surrounded by tropical rainforests on their landward sides.

But while the sometimes oppressive humidity to be found in all three of these places can certainly take its toll on those persons who really aren't used to our tropical climates -- which I believe to be your actual point here -- the World Cup games being played in Manaus are no more taking place "in the rain forest," than is the Pro Bowl here at Aloha Stadium.

Go USA! Although right now, many in Honolulu are on the edge of their seats in hope that local girl Michelle Wie can hold onto her current narrow two-stroke lead at the U.S. Women's Open in Pinehurst, and finally break through to win her first major tournament after nearly ten years on the LPGA tour.

    Aloha.

There are also any number of NFL teams whose staff and players would probably prefer to not have to travel to Green Bay or Chicago in December. And I'm sure your local San Diego State Aztecs don't appreciate playing a late-season football game at Wyoming -- or any sport in Fresno at any time of year, but that's obviously another discussion for a later date. ;-D

With regards to various locales for athletic events and their respective time zones, weather, climate, venues and playing conditions, it just is what it is. The good athlete will suck it up and play through it. The mediocre, the dilettante and the diva will all whine about it.

P.S.: The high school team in the video linked above, the Barrow Whalers, played for Alaska's small school football championship only two years later. They didn't win, but hey, there were a bunch of other teams that wished they could've been there instead of Barrow, but they didn't make it.

    Aloha.

If you're going to win a tournament, this is the one. Congratulation to Michelle Wie, 2014 U.S. Open champion. While she's a former wunderkind who's been around for what seems like forever, she's actually only 24, and has finally come into her own this year to realize her potential.

The running of the clock has always been a stressor of sorts in the background and now considered part of what a team effort must strategize around.

I generally try to stay unplugged on the weekends.  Especially with the weather the NY had this weekend...absolutely perfect, warm sunshine and low humidity.

What a match...USA played their arses off, much better performance than the Ghana game, if a lesser result.  Footie is cruel like that sometimes.

Now that the stomach punch of that sick last second equalizer has worn off, I feel great about the team and it's chances of advancing.  I know the krauts say they're gonna play for the win but with their goal differential advantage it wouldn't make sense to take any chances...were I coaching the Germans I'd take my foot off the gas and play the B team.

Keep doing what we're doing and we'll be amongst the last 16 standing...USA! USA! USA!

If Ghana wins, US loses, then GD is tied and Ghana win implies total goals scored tiebreaker goes to Ghana.

It is true that if goals scored tiebreaker is tied, USA wins final tiebreaker, head to head.

Here'a  hypothetical for you, USA loses 1-0 to Germany. Ghana beats Portugal by 2-0, or even 2-1.

    then Ghana goes through.

    If:

USA loses 3-0 and Portugal wins 2-0
USA loses 3-1 and Portugal wins 3-0
USA loses 3-2 and Portugal wins 4-0
USA loses 4-0 and Portugal wins 2-1
USA loses 4-1 and Portugal wins 3-1
USA loses 4-2 and Portugal wins 4-1

If any of those scenarios play out it will be a coin flip between USA and Portugal to see who advances.

You can probably get about 4-1 odds if you really want to bet on Ghana advancing.
