6 Guantanamo Detainees Transferred to Uruguay

Six detainees at Guantanamo have been transferred to Uruguay. Four are from Syria, one is from Tunisia and one is Palestinian.

Their names: Jihad Diyab, Ahmed Adnan Ahjam, Ali Hussain Shaabaan and Omar Mahmoud Faraj, Abdul Bin Mohammed Abis Ourgy and Mohammed Tahanmatan.

136 detainees remain at Gitmo. 67 have been cleared for release. 13 have been transferred since November.

The President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, said they are free to leave Uruguay at any time. He refused to agree to hold them for two years as requested by the U.S. In a letter to the U.S. he wrote:

"We have offered our hospitality to these human beings suffering an atrocious kidnapping in Guantanamo. Our motive of course is humanitarian."

In a statement, Mujica said:

[Guantanamo] isn't a jail. It's a kidnapping nest because a jail assumes it is subject to some sort of rule of law, with the presence of a judge with a judicial point of view. And there is none of that there."

Gitmo is a symptom of the sickness if our democracy. I think history will see it rather like the FDR internment camps. But an even far more shameful chapter. They only lasted for a few years and as far as I know no one was tortured. It has eaten away at the respect the rest of the world once had for us and that we had for ourselves like some kind of cancer. We now look like some kind of pathetic addict who knows what we are doing is destroying us but we can't find a way to stop.

If Obama wants to think about legacy ending that madness would be a good place to start. I give him some credit for trying but he needs to try harder. IMO.

what Mujica said is I'm sure what 99% of the world thinks. And they are right. Even the so called totalitarian governments of the world usually at least bother to charge people with something before locking them up. In surrendering the high ground like this we have done far more damage to our country than these guys could ever do.

...moved them off their soil to some military lease for the sole purpose of denying them the rights they would have received on the mainland.
FYI, I have been to GITMO twice, but long before 2001.
