Egypt Charges 20 al Jazeera Journalists With Aiding Terrorists

20 journalists who work for the al-Jazeera news organization have been charged in Egypt with aiding terrorism and/or joining a terrorist group. Among them are at least three who work for the al Jazeera English network, including "acting bureau chief Mohammed Fahmy, a Canadian-Egyptian, award-winning correspondent Peter Greste of Australia and producer Baher Mohamed, an Egyptian."

The Egyptian journalists are charged with joining a terrorist group, while the foreign journalists are charged with aiding a terrorist group.Egypt enacted the law under which they are charged last month. The three mentioned above were arrested on Dec. 29 and remain in custody. [More...]

The 20 journalists were accused of setting up a media network that used two suites in a luxury hotel in Cairo as a media center.

The statement said the defendants “manipulated pictures” to create “unreal scenes to give the impression to the outside world that there is a civil war that threatens to bring down the state” and broadcast scenes to aid “the terrorist group in achieving its goals and influencing the public opinion.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdelattie insists the journalists will receive due process in the courts. I doubt anyone outside of Egypt believes him.

why do I think "manipulation" is double-speak for reporting news the current government would simply rather not see reported.

It's getting real tough all over for journalists and whistleblowers...and good ones are so few and far between as it is.  Not good folks.

Probably not too many inside Egypt believe that either.

    We all knew that.

And anyone who looked at a foreign TV network controlled by Muslims, who are the base group from which the current terrorists are killing people all over the world, with suspicion....is a racist.

And of course anyone who dares question the mighty Scott is a racist.

    We all knew that.

"anyone who disagrees with Obama;" you're someone who has a blog where racism and bigotry is your stock in trade, complete with photos.

Sorry, jim - these arguments you're making might sell to the Fox News crowd, a group that apparently would make the Jay Leno "Jay-Walking" contingent look like Mensa members, but you're not going to find any takers here.

Yes Jim, one opf the very few times you actually hit the nail on the head.  That is pretty much THE definition of racism.  I suspect you look at black folks and latinos with the same suspicion because racist generally aren't faithful to hating one race.

doesn't mean what it used to, many now are partisans, so its not a great stretch that some may be using the shield of journalism while actively working with some faction.

Messing with "journalists", even shady partisan ones, is still a third rail issue that can turn middle of the road fellow journalists against a cause. Unfortunately that makes being a partisan even more attractive as a martyr for the cause.

    is nothing new.

Walter Duranty comes immediately to mind.

In a New York Times article dated 23 August 1933, Duranty wrote, "Any report of a famine in Russia is today an exaggeration or malignant propaganda. The food shortage, however, which has affected the whole population in the last year and particularly in the grain-producing provinces--the Ukraine, North Caucasus, the Lower Volga--has, however, caused heavy loss of life." Duranty concluded "it is conservative to suppose" that, in certain provinces with a total population of over 40 million, mortality had "at least trebled." [8]
On March 31, 1933, Walter Duranty denounced the famine stories and Gareth Jones in The New York Times. In the piece, he described the situation under the title "Russians Hungry, But Not Starving" as follows: "In the middle of the diplomatic duel between Great Britain and the Soviet Union over the accused British engineers, there appears from a British source a big scare story in the American press about famine in the Soviet Union, with 'thousands already dead and millions menaced by death from starvation." Malcolm Muggeridge, a correspondent for The Manchester Guardian, called Duranty a "liar".

Study Finds Fox News Viewers Least Informed Of All Viewers

The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly -- a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all.

Of course you and others on the Left think you are smarter than anyone. And I love your source:

UPDATE: Fox News hit out at the school responsible for the study on Thursday. A spokesperson for the network told The Hollywood Reporter, "Considering FDU's undergraduate school is ranked as one of the worst in the country, we suggest the school invest in improving its weak academic program instead of spending money on frivolous polling - their student body does not deserve to be so ill-informed."

    And yet...

Fox News is the most trusted news source in television, with 35 percent of Americans saying they have more confidence in the cable news channel than any other TV news channel, according to the latest poll.

This marks the fifth year in a row since Public Policy Polling began its annual survey on the most trusted TV news source that Fox News has taken the top spot. The survey of 845 registered voters was taken Jan. 23-26 and has a 3.4 percent margin of error
