Friday Open Thread

The Senate passed a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown. The Senate bill did not strike "Obamacare." It now goes back to the House.

I just got an email from the federal court in Nebraska with their shut-down plan if a funding bill does not pass. You can read it here. I haven't received one yet for Colorado. Here's the memo the federal courts administrative office issued on Sept. 25.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

And a Friday shout-out to my wife, who never comments but checks in sometimes...the greatest, most low maintenance, high tolerance, patient, loving woman this brief candle could ever grant to a pathetic and damaged boy like me. I love you, baby.

    TGIG, my friends.

Everyone is working two tasks right now, your regular job and preparing for a possible shutdown and the emergencies that can arise due to that.  All commands are trying to cover bases for essential services.  Soldiers in uniform will not be affected but some essential support is not active duty soldiers and will be affected.

Republicans claim to be about supporting the military, well what they are doing right now is stressing out the military....and that is what they seem to do best, not support the military.

to help a novice is his quest for enlightenment...

So, I'm waiting in line at the grocery store behind a woman speaking on her cellphone in another language. Ahead of her is a white man. After the woman hangs up, he speaks up.

Man: "I didn't want to say anything while you were on the phone, but you're in America now. You need to speak English."

    Woman: "Excuse me?"

Man: (speaking very slowly) "If you want to speak Mexican, go back to Mexico. In America, we speak English."

Woman: "Sir, I was speaking Navajo. If you want to speak English, go back to England."

    TechDirt on Friday Sept 27:
So, we just discussed how it appears that Dianne Feinstein accidentally confirmed what was widely suspected: that the NSA is tapping the internet backbone to get access to emails. This is interesting on many levels, not the least of which is that Feinstein herself has been famously harsh against any kind of leak, regularly arguing that the leaks themselves are more damaging than what the leaks may reveal about US government abuse. In the past, Feinstein has raged against leakers...
    [...snip...]
Similarly, she has argued that Ed Snowden is a "traitor" for revealing information, though unlike her, he didn't reveal this particular program (or at least it hasn't been reported on yet).

Meanwhile, the Senate's current rules on revealing classified information suggest that an investigation is warranted
    [...snip...]
So, will Senator Feinstein call for an investigation into her own leak? Will she call herself a traitor? We'll see...

Hope she doesn't hurt herself backpedalling furiously...

like to see her private emails distributed widely on the internet - maybe youtube. Let some functionary, another "traitor" (patriot) dig 'em out - as they are permitted to do under the program she thinks is just dandy - and seek a nice publisher.

    These people - real elitists.
How did they get to be bigshots in the democratic party?
Or - how did the democratic party dissolve into one that has people like her as bigshots?

to keep a secret, you don't talk about the subject at all.

I'm not sure what the bid deal here is, there are only so many ways to monitor from a technical standpoint and the easiest one is to tap into the backbone and look at all the packets.

Regardless of methods it doesn't seem to be working.
