EFF Launches "Stop Watching Us"

86 civil liberties groups and Internet companies have joined EFF in demanding an end to NSA spying.

bq. In an open letter to lawmakers sent today, the groups call for a congressional investigatory committee, similar to the Church Committee of the 1970s. The letter also demands legal reforms to rein in domestic spying and demands that public officials responsible for this illegal surveillance are held accountable for their actions.

The letter says the NSA program is illegal:

This type of blanket data collection by the government strikes at bedrock American values of freedom and privacy. This dragnet surveillance violates the First and Fourth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which protect citizens’ right to speak and associate anonymously and guard against unreasonable searches and seizures that protect their right to privacy.

EFF also lauched "Stop Watching Us" -- "a global petition calling on Congress to provide a public accounting of the United States' domestic spying capabilites and to bring an end to illegal surveillance." You can add your name here.

prescription-strength anti-perspirants would have much effect on the flop sweat that's running in rivers inside the Beltway and in secure bunkers all over the country.

    I turned on Fox (none / 0) (#4)

I never turn on Fox but I wanted to know what they were saying, they had something on called The Five.  I don't know who these guys are, but the guy running the show had polling broken down that showed how many Dems were upset if Bush did this vs. Obama doing this.  It was a significant gap, I believe he called it an "a$$ load" of hypocrites.

There was a gap for Republicans too, but it was a smaller gap, I believe he called that a significant number of hypocrites.  He challenged the people of the United States to stand by their principles and stop being hypocrites, if this would have outraged you under Bush it had better outrage you under Obama.  Okay :)

    I didn't see the Fox story (none / 0) (#7)

But I was reading a similar story yesterday, pretty much said the same thing, except it was broken down as Republican and Democrat. I'm not sure how accurate the polling numbers are.
I still find it odd that the NSA programs still rate as high as they do on the acceptable side in the current poll.
