Happy Mother's Day Open Thread

Happy Mother's Day to All. What's Mothers' Day without pictures of the kids who made us mothers? Here are some of my favorites of the TL kid and me, in chronological order:

1982: Denver

2002: Florence, Italy

2006: Amsterdam

(If you're wondering whose head is cut off at the bottom, it's Ezra Klein, full photo here.)

2013: (Bon Jovi Concert, Denver)

One more of my favorite babies: The first Baby Kos, Ari. What a cutie.

Mother's Day is so universal. Everyone has or had a mother, and almost everyone else is a mother, is looking forward to being a mother, is married to a mother, or has a sister or sister-in-law who is a mother.

To all mothers reading this, we wish you a Happy Mother's Day. If your mom is still around, be thankful, and don't forget to call her. Even if she's not, you can still take out a photo or look up at the sky and tell her hello. Wherever she is, she's probably thinking of you too.

Enjoy the day, this is an open thread, all topics welcome.

I'm getting a pretty awesome Mother's Day present today - my boy's college graduation.

as getting there did not come easily for my son -- and so, the grin on his face, from far across the arena, forever is one of my favorite memories.

He sent me tulips this year, not roses, a few days ago -- ahead of his arrival here for a wonderful weekend, already.  And Towanda Dotter just called from the road and is on the way, no doubt with another of her mushy cards, which she makes herself.

I type this at a desk with lots of photos of them as babies, toddlers, teens, etc. . . . but every year is better, too, as they are great grown-ups.

i visited my family, and my brother and I pitched in on cooking a home-made brunch for my mom and my sister-in-law, and we all had good food, cheerful conversation, and lots of laughter.  My brother and sister-in-law's kids, 12 and 10, are thriving, and my mom, who's 89 years old (my dad passed away 12 years ago last January from a rare but fatal form of encephalitis.), is doing okay also.

It was a fun family reunion.  After a great brunch and get-together, I went for a walk and enjoyed our nice spring weather, went home, payed attention to Aziza (my 3 year old pet Congo African Grey Parrot), and did some other stuff around the house.

It was a wonderful day overall.

I have several showings of my all time favorite movie coming up, including one at one of the only 3 independent, non-profit movie theatres here in our area, and I'm excited about all of them.  With or without anybody, I'll be going.  As weird and crazy as this may sound, that's how i am.

Thanks very much for your compliments.

Believe it or not, my all time favorite flick is....(ready for this?!?)..

    West Side Story!

I can never really put a finger on why this 52-year-old classic is my all time favorite flick, but there's something about this great, golden oldie-but-keeper of a classic that keeps me going back to see it again and again. It's the one movie that I never get tired of.

    To paraphrase the MGM adage:

"Unlike other classics, West Side Story grows younger"

     It's so true!

I have even had the privilege of meeting two in person- oculus and Military Tracy. Hope you are being pampered!

My own Mom passed away in 1989, at age 61. It seems so long ago- I have almost lived as many years without her now as I had with her. Of course I think of her every day, especially today, and, as I did when she was alive, I hope she only knows about the good things I have done :-) I realized soon after she died that the hardest loss is that unwavering love. For most of us, no matter what we do, who we love, who we marry - no one will ever love us as much as our mother does. I miss that and am thankful I was worshipped as long as I was, even though I did not realize it at the time!

She was funny, fun, loved to go anywhere and do anything. She had 8 children and lost her two oldest sons, one at age 3 and one at 32, pain she carried with her constantly. She never tried to bury that pain or hide it from us, and it just made us know all the more how much we were also loved. The rest of us grew up knowing how fleeting life can be - she never really tried to to each us anything about that, but it was in her example of keeping on no matter what and enjoying our loved ones whenever possible.

I am thankful for her good example (and also the few bad examples I learned from too- she knows what they are!)

    A moving tribute. My older daughter and I had (5.00 / 1) (#22)

My mother died at age 57. She my older daughter, her first grandchild. But not the three born after she died. She was a real "kid"  person (kindergarten teacher).  I miss her love and good sense as I raised my two.

    to all moms.
Jeralyn, you looked so very young in 1982!  (But then, didn't we all?)  And let me hasten to add that you still look great!
Our parish did quite well yesterday with our food booth.  It did rain off and on, but it stopped raining for a couple of hours just at lunch time, fortunately.  I don't have the figures yet for how much we took in, but there weren't all that many leftovers.  Hummus all gone.  Dolmades all eaten up.  Only two pieces of baklava left.  There is chicken souvlaki (uncooked) left over, but we froze those and will cook them at a later time.  Some tzatziki sauce left over.  A few salad greens left, and very little salad dressing.
All in all, we did better than I expected, given the weather.

    I am assuming (none / 0) (#26)
by Zorba on Sun May 12, 2013 at 07:57:27 PM EST
that she is buying the frozen spanakopita triangles, which is what the Greek distributors usually offer.  They are uncooked.  If you manage to get some, keep them in the freezer.  Do not defrost.  Pop them in a preheated 350 oven for about 25-30 minutes until golden.
We, BTW, make our spanakopita from scratch.  However, we are a small parish with small food festivals and food booths.  If we ever get bigger and our festivals get bigger, we'll be buying the pre-made stuff.

I'm glad so many of you are also having fun Mother's days. It's really nice to take a day off from all the serious stuff going on.

... from a very foggy SoCal. We got up early this morning to go for a walk, but can't even see the driveway from out the back door. We'll wait a few hours until it starts to lift.

There's no mistaking whose child that is in your photos, because your son looks every bit his mother's boy; the resemblance is quite remarkable. (The eyes and smiles in particular give you both away.)

Those photos serve to remind us of how very quickly our children do grow up, even as there were undoubtedly those fleeting moments in times past when it seemed like it would be forever before they finally did.

Then, almost before we've fully realized it, they've fledged and flown from our nests on their own power and volition, and inevitably, our roles and relationships with them evolve accordingly from provider, protector and nurturer to mentor, friend and equal.

But no matter how many the years are that pass subsequently, they're still our babies. And while we proudly watch them -- sometimes with no small amounts of trepidation -- as they seek and find their own pathways in this world, we know that within each of us as parents, there is an intangible but very real part of them, that little child who will always remain ours, exclusively.

    Enjoy the day, everyone. Aloha.

in my part of SoCal, only a few miles from the beach.  Sunny and hot already at 9 am, setting up another scorcher, high 80s/low 90s.  Feels like the middle of summer.

Sent mom HMD greetings, even though in recent years she's turned to the dark side politically and seems at times like she wants to add Hugh Hewitt to her Will.

Kinda strange family I was born into, me being the oddball politically, a lib Dem from early on and still to this day while the rest were/are rock-ribbed mouth-breathing RWers or devolved to that low point more recently.

I suppose the whole point, wrt spiritual evolution on my part, was to learn understanding and forgiveness for all the stupidity and insanity that surrounds me.  Next life though I prefer a family a little more in sync with me in these matters.

by TeresaInPa on Mon May 13, 2013 at 07:33:47 AM EST
than politics.  I and my siblings are all liberals... we still managed to be very angry with each other over Obama/Hillary, gun laws, religion, etc.... then I have one conservative christian brother (who created a great family with a terrific son to be proud of) and a sister in law who is against teachers unions while the whole family is full of teachers who are union activists. That sister in law is an Obama loving democrat too.  So you see, you don't need people to be in a different party to have major disagreements that cause anger and family stress.

Value your family for what they get right and take everything you think is great about the left with a grain of salt.  Think independently, think about whether you really think all the things you think you think or if you are just going along with the crowd.  Your family members can't be wrong about everything.

The fog bank's already receded here in the northeast corner of Pasadena, where we're right up flush against the San Gabriel Mountains. But it sure was thick earlier this morning! And yes, it's going to be a scorcher today -- already pushing 90 degrees, according to the outside thermometer, and it's only a little past 10:30 a.m.

So, we're going to stick to indoor activities, and my mother suggested that we all go to the Norton Simon Museum this afternoon, where she's a longtime member. Sounds like a plan. I'm proud to say that we're all unabashed museum hounds in our family.

    Have a wonderful day. Aloha.

You look so joyful and your son was adorable! And, in that photo, you really resemble one of my best friends, whose adorable son is now almost TL Kid's age. We lost her, tragically, to a heart attack three years ago. But I love how wonderful her son has become as a young man, and your posting and photos really brings home how integral moms are in their kids' lives -- forever. Hope you had a glorious Mother's Day!
