Billionaire Phil Anschutz, Football and Rock

The Denver Post has an article today on Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz who is taking a greater role in his expanding sports and entertainment ventures in Los Angeles. Anschutz, who rarely gives interviews and is very private, has been on a "media tour" in the past month. He gave his first media interview in decades. The reason: He's trying to bring an NFL team back to Los Angeles. The team would play at his Farmers Field stadium.

[Last month] Anschutz embarked on a Southern California publicity tour. Area sportswriters and business officials were taken aback not only by his decision to grant his first extensive media interview in decades, but by the sight of Anschutz sitting courtside at an L.A. Lakers game at Staples Center.

I'm not interested in whether Anschutz and AEG bring an NFL team to L.A. I just want to know why the Rolling Stones aren't coming to Denver since Anschutz is bankrolling the tour-- epecially since it was the Stones that reached out to AEG not the other way around. [More...]

Anschutz owns the sports and entertainment blockbuster AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), which owns AEG Live. AEG Live (Concerts West is its touring division) got the Rolling Stones tour in a last minute deal, for which AEG Live reportedly paid $80 million (including $20 million in advances to the Stones and lines of credit as the tour progresses.) Anschutz reportedly personally approved the deal within 45 minutes of Stones' lawyer Joyce Smyth calling AEG Live's Randy Phillips, who called Anschutz.

There will be shows in Oakland, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Las Vegas, and then it's east to Chicago, where three shows are scheduled. Second shows were just added in Anaheim and a third in Los Angeles. Also just added: second shows in Boston and Philadelphia.

AEG Live is the second largest concert promoter in the country, after Live Nation. This lengthy 2012 New Yorker profile of Phil Anschutz as The Man Who Owns L.A. is very interesting.

In exchange for putting up so much money for the Stones, couldn't Anschutz have brought one concert to his home town?

if Barry Fay was still running things in this town, the Stones would be coming here.

...like Mr. Irvine, Donald Bren, owns the rest of it the region and it's power players.
