Ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Convicted of Corruption Charges

Back in 2010, the feds brought an 89 count indictment against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and others, concerning the awarding of contracts in the city's Department of Water and Sewerage. The charges included racketeering, extortion, bribery, mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns.

His father, Bernard Kilpatrick, was charged with racketeering, extortion, and two counts of filing false tax returns.

The trial lasted five months. The Government called 80 witnesses. A brief history of the trial is here.

Today the jury returned guilty verdicts against Kwame on 24 counts. His father, Bernard Kilpatrick, was convicted of one tax count, and contractor Bobby Ferguson was convicted on 9 counts.

Remanded to prison immediately.  Bernard K to remain free on bond.

You mean Bobby Ferguson. (none / 0) (#3)

You had me confused there for a second, starting to think how someone could be immediately remanded to custody while simultaneously remaining free on bond.
    :-D

Working in the business as I do, I don't have much use or sympathy for elected officials who abuse their office and the public trust for personal gain. Lily Tomlin is right. No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up.

    Aloha.

What happened to the indictments between 89 and 24? All the links only account for a few.

went to the jury, which convicted on 24, acquitted on three, and hung (were unable to agree) on three.  The remaining counts must have been dismissed before or during the trial, either by a legal ruling of the judge or by virtue of being withdrawn by the prosecution.

    Wiki

There's a whole lot more to his story - including the infamous rumored party at the Manoogian Mansion, the subsequent murder of Tamara Greene (who was an exotic dancer at this rumored party, and who was allegedly assaulted by Kwame Kilpatrick's wife, for supposedly giving Mr. Mayor a lap dance).

(Prepare yourself before you read the wiki page - it's a LONG read).

One wonders which party this dirt bag belongs to.  A media secret.

Do you mean "one" in the royal sense, or do you mean there's actually just a single person who's that clueless?

...Mayoral political parties are rarely listed, but a black mayor of Detroit doesn't take a genius to figure out, but it does require require a functioning synapses or two.
