Climate Change Report Outlines Perils for U.S. Military
    By JOHN M. BRODER

    Published: NYT November 9, 2012

WASHINGTON -- Climate change is accelerating, and it will place unparalleled strains on American military and intelligence agencies in coming years by causing ever more disruptive events around the globe, the nation's top scientific research group said in a report issued Friday.

The group, the National Research Council, says in a study commissioned by the C.I.A. and other intelligence agencies that clusters of apparently unrelated events exacerbated by a warming climate will create more frequent but unpredictable crises in water supplies, food markets, energy supply chains and public health

Mr. Steinbruner, the director of the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland, said that humans are pouring carbon dioxide and other climate-altering gases into the atmosphere at a rate never before seen. "We know there will have to be major climatic adjustments -- there's no uncertainty about that -- but we just don't know the details," he said. "We do know they will be big."

Epilogue: The Republican Party, always out front when it comes to The Military, has responded to this devastating slap down of the Deniers by voting to cut the CIA's Climate Study budget.

the old one about global warming vs. cold and snow is so out of date now, most of the wingnuts have already moved on with new lies.

    Meanwhile...

Sea surface temperatures are about two degrees Fahrenheit warmer than they were before 1980, raising the potential for a big snow by about 10 percent. And any individual storm, including this nor'easter, will pick up more moisture as it spins across a warmer ocean. What's more, a warm ocean clashes with cold air masses from the Arctic. A bigger contrast in temperatures may mean a bigger storm.

You really have to start using your head for something other than a hatrack or a placemarker for willful ignorance.

In the last several years in the place I call home we've had a lot of lake effects snow.  Lake effects is a pain in the neck because of the annoying frequency of snowfall.  Where I live we were rarely hit with lake effects snow until recent years and in the past no lake effects at all after about mid-January.  Now lake effects this far off the lake is a common phenomenon even into February.  Today I shoveled 5" of lake effects snow.

Now why do you suppose we're getting more lake effects, even well into winter?  Clueless aren't you.  The answer is the lakes don't freeze over as much of their surface as in the past.  In other words there's more open water than in the past because it's WARMER.  More open water means more frequent snow.

You and your type are ruining this country.

    As I said MMGW is a faith based affair. (1.00 / 2) (#46)
by jimakaPPJ on Fri Feb 08, 2013 at 11:23:39 PM EST
Let me know when it meets these guidelines.

A scientific theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment."[1][2] Scientists create scientific theories from hypotheses that have been corroborated through the scientific method, then gather evidence to test their accuracy. As with all forms of scientific knowledge, scientific theories are inductive in nature and do not make apodictic propositions; instead, they aim for predictive and explanatory force

    Link

Maybe you have been wondering why the alarmists keep missing their predictions.

A preliminary draft of a report by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was leaked to the public this month, and climate skeptics say it contains fresh evidence of 20 years of overstated global warming.

The report -- which is not scheduled for publication until 2014 -- was leaked by someone involved in the IPCC's review process, and is available for download online. Bloggers combing through the report discovered a chart comparing the four temperature models the group has published since 1990. Each has overstated the rise in temperature that Earth actually experienced.

    Link

    Could this be the reason???

Climate warming causes many changes in the global carbon cycle, with the net effect generally considered to be an increase in atmospheric CO2 with increasing temperature -- in other words, a positive feedback between temperature and CO2. Uncertainty in the magnitude of this feedback has led to a wide range in projections of current global warming: about 40% of the uncertainty in these projections comes from this source.

    snip

In this week's Nature, David Frank and colleagues extend this empirical approach by comparing nine global-scale temperature reconstructions with CO2 data from three Antarctic ice cores over the period ad 1050-1800. The authors derive a likely range for the feedback strength of 1.7-21.4 p.p.m.v. CO2 per degree Celsius, with a median value of 7.7.

The researchers conclude that the recent estimates of 40 p.p.m.v. CO2 per degree Celsius can be excluded with 95% confidence, suggesting significantly less amplification of current warming.

It couldn't be the IPCC admitting they've been wrong for 20 years, could it??

Or that article in the well known MMGW denier... Science Daily... (sarcasm alert).... That explains the error by noting the amplification factor has been wrong by around 80%???

But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

    Hahahahahahahhah ...

BTW - Here's a more recent study showing how the IPCC - far from being alarmist - is actually understating the rise of sea levels due to global warming.

Lead author of the study, Stefan Rahmstorf, said: "This study shows once again that the IPCC is far from alarmist, but in fact has under-estimated the problem of climate change. That applies not just for sea-level rise, but also to extreme events and the Arctic sea-ice loss."

    That was easy.

A theme of my environmental coverage here and elsewhere is that most environmental problems are overestimated, partly because of the neo-religious fervor behind the Malthusianism-uber-alles methodology of environmentalists, and partly for the closely related reason that serial crises are the best means by which the political class gathers more power to itself.  In the fullness of time we've come to recognize that environmental problems are not world-ending potential apocalyses, but normal problems that we manage as well or badly as other normal human problems like crime, education, health care, and so forth.  We've noted here the collapse of the population bomb crisis, the resource scarcity crisis, and, just yesterday, the species extinction crisis.

As you know, I believe that 99% of all this is various groups wanting to squeeze money and power from the US taxpayer in the form of grants and new laws. And no, there is no conspiracy, just people wanting the same things and using each other to try and get it.

And I don't believe consensus proves anything. The church did that for thousands of years when it came to science. Doctors had consensus that bleeding was a viable medical treatment. A hundred years or so there was consensus that human conduct could be understood and predicted based on the size/shape of the human skull.

And who can forget the consensus that blacks all had certain abilities and characteristics??

So mark me down as not believeing. And I leave you with this thought.

Many of the fears about sea level rise are unfounded. Yes, the sea is rising slowly. Satellite measurements since the early 1990's confirm a rate of rise of about 3mm/a[21]. However, there are already defences against the sea. It is necessary to allow for tides, storm surges and even tsunamis. The existing defences are measured in metres, not mm. An increase in the average level of 3mm/a can be offset by raising the defences by an additional brick every 30 years or so. The rising sea level is not a threat.

    I'll take the brick.

The deniers are usually smart enough to at least repeat Schneider's words while taking him out of context to distort his words.

You can't even manage that.  What Schneider actually said:

In 1989, Schneider addressed the challenge scientists face trying to communicate complex, important issues without adequate time during media interviews. This citation sometimes was used by his critics to accuse him of supporting misuse of science for political goals:

On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, in effect promising to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but -- which means that we must include all the doubts, the caveats, the ifs, ands, and buts. On the other hand, we are not just scientists but human beings as well. And like most people we'd like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climatic change. To do that we need to get some broadbased support, to capture the public's imagination. That, of course, entails getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This 'double ethical bind' we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. I hope that means being both.

for a while now here in Boston but it's not too bad yet.  We don't have many candles, but the worst of it isn't supposed to hit until tonight so I figure if the power were to go out, it wouldn't be until we're asleep anyway.  The bigger issue would be losing the heat.  But we have plenty of sweaters.

My new bro-in-law (a serious sax and flute player) who is performing during the Grammy week festivities, left this message on Facebook this morning:

So today was AMAZING!! We played with Sting, Tom Morello, Jackson Brown & the man himself, Bruce Springsteen! I played "Born To Run" with Bruce!!! Kinda surreal to be quite honest :-) -- at LA Convention Center.

Don't get no cooler than that as a player. You play with The Boss AND the main Rage man, come on. Puh-leaze.

Oh and did you catch my memory trip about my father's acting career in the Monday thread? Twas a trip indeed. (LINK)

I just have a bonefish skiff.  My neighbors go offshore all the time and always want me to ride along.  Big offshore boats are  fun when everybody is catching fish.  Lotta sailfish now.  In my skiff we fish around a few mangroves for snook, redfish, and bonefish then go to lunch at one of the bayside restaurants.  Don't want to over do it.

and there are always a few resident big tarpon that stick around for the off season.  You do know they come here to mate in the spring so it's hard to make them eat during that time.  You can always go to the bridges and hook up using live mullet, pin fish or crabs but fly fishing with chicken feathers is tricky.

getting the smaller ones on the outgoing tide from the Key Biscayne bridges late night, making bucktails dance on the surface like a shrimp on the shadow line with a spinning reel on 10 pound test.

I accidentally hooked the motherload one night, which screamed about 100 yards away from the bridge and hunkered down sideways at the surface for about 30 minutes, before deciding he wanted to head for the ocean. You know that didn't end well for me.

And what does this comment of mine have to do with snow in New England? I guess I'd rather be fishing here than freezing there.

The CEO of this utility was on TV just now predicting wide spread outages. He gave one piece of very important advice: Don't assume that the utility knows that your area (or, your house) has lost power. They only know about large sections on the grid going down, not individual homes. So, if your power goes down, call them immediately. They have dedicated crews set aside to handle individual homes. Make sure you have the emergency phone number for the utility that services your area.

Again, DON'T ASSUME they know your power is out!

Also, this has been one of the warmest winters I can remember.  And btw, snow is not a sign of very cold weather.  Nevermind the fact that more severe storms are a sign of climate change.  It can be 32 degrees and snow a lot.  Or it can be -20 and not snow at all.
